The BULAWAYO MAYORAL ELECTION itself will be on Saturday 13th August. It is really important that we all get out there and vote our current Mayor, Japhet NDABENI-NCUBE, back into office. He has achieved a remarkable amount under very difficult and often hostile conditions. Bulawayo still has a functioning City Council - let's keep it that way. YOUR VOTE COUNTS. For this Mayoral Election you must vote in the Ward where you are registered. So far we only have 4 polling stations in Ward 4
- Waterford Primary School
- Leeside Shopping Centre
- Tennyson Primary School
- Ascot Shopping Centre.

CRIME AWARENESS BULAWAYO UPDATE written and compiled by Tracey Burns 29/07/05

British Statesman in the 18th Century - Edmunde Burke said "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." There are a number of con-artists out there, taking advantage of the various situations that have being beset upon us at these tumultuous times. On this update I shall mention a few tricks that these guys use with regards to the "lack of fuel" situation.
TRICKSTERS WITH FUEL
One man was approached by one of these so-called "businessman" and decided to buy 8 drums of fuel for himself. He sent his driver to the designated place with the drums and the driver was met by this con-man, who said he would return in half an hour with the drums full. After waiting one hour the driver suspected something. He returned to his employer who then came back with the driver and along the way found one of his drums dumped on the side of the road - empty. This con-man walked away with 7 drums - worth a great deal. Thank goodness no money changed hands or the fact that he could have held the driver at gun point and walk off with the money as well! In a queue in Harare, one con-man approached various vehicles stating that they were using the coupon system of which he would issue the coupon on receipt of the money ($10 000 per litre) for 20 litres of fuel. Once the owners of the vehicles arrived at the pumps they could fill up with the 20 litres. About 40 cars were approached and each one paid - that amounts to $ 8 000 000. Finally the pumps opened and the first car with the so-called coupon gave it to the petrol attendant who was totally confused. When it was finally assessed by the garage as to what had taken place, and that the various people had been conned out of their money, the man had long gone.
There is a guy going around calling himself "Albert Ndhlovu" who gives a cell phone number in order to sell you fuel - some people have handed over money and guess what - never to see the man again and the cell phone numbers that he is giving out belong to various people who know nothing about what the complainant is on about. There is also a man going around saying he is from NOCZIM, has all the necessary identity cards etc, with the NOCZIM logo - he has conned a number of people out of their money. PHONE the necessary place in order to find out if this man is legitimate or call the police. I would like to know the name of that person so that I could inform you in my next update.
Water in fuel and people emptying their containers completely are really messing up their engines. There is far too much residue in the fuel these days, so DO NOT empty the container totally. When decanting into other containers, make sure these containers are clean with no cooking oil, or car oil or a mixture of diesel or petrol, as again this will cause hassles with your car engine.
HOUSEHOLD SECURITY - RESISTANCE DEVICES
The most obvious points of entry for any burglar are downstairs doors, windows and upstairs windows next to a flat roof or tree. All the sophisticated gadgetry in the world is of no use unless the boundary basics - solidly constructed and well-secured doors and windows - are taken care of. If your door or window frames are old, weak or falling apart, the best lock in the world will not protect you. Wooden door frames in old houses present special problems. A burglar will be able to make a gap with a crowbar. To protect this area, purchase a full-length aluminium or steel edge guard that can be attached to the door frame adjacent to the lock-bold. Doors with glass panels can be protected by a metal grille.
All doors should be solidly mounted, with the hinge screws extending well into the wall/door frame. Ideally, the door should open towards you with the hinges on the inside. Doors with exterior hinges (common in some homes) are a major risk. All a burglar has to do is drive the pins up and lift the door from the frame. Burglar bars should be installed on all Windows which are left open, downstairs and upstairs, if you don't have an alarm system.
CONTACTS FOR.....
I have contacts for the following reliable companies/individuals to install or go to:
Wrought Iron / Burglar Bars and Fences and Electric Fences
Self Defence Classes - vital for any woman living in Zimbabwe - helps you when you go overseas too!!
Interior and Exterior Alarms
Just contact me and I will give you all the necessary details. Phone or email me.
POST TRAUMATIC STRESS
You will suffer with various symptoms after a hijacking, attempted hijacking or armed robbery, like Sleep disturbances flash backs nightmares mood swings chronic fatigue - usually a day or two after the incident has taken place memory impairment headaches eating disorders diminished interest in surroundings
Please contact me so that I can visit, or if you want to get out of the vicinity, you are welcome to visit me. The main thing here, is that I have gone through a violent attack myself, and understand exactly what you have gone/going through. Our support group is also fantastic, but not necessary if you want to deal with me directly. There are a great deal of you out there that have gone through exactly the same as others, you can help each other, join us, we have a good time together and support each other greatly.
APPEAL
Yes, again I appeal for help. Whatever you can give, be it money, desperately needed fuel or a service etc, would be greatly appreciated. A few companies responded to my appeal previously and I mean a few, which will only help out for a little longer into maybe 2006. The Trust survives solely on donations by the public and private sectors for donations, and our services, including the updates are all free, for you, the public. Do I start charging for this information that I feel is vital for your survival in Zimbabwe? The Bulawayo Trust has only me running the whole show - which I thoroughly enjoy - and I do not want to see it closed, as it has helped a number of victims in and around Bulawayo. Please help wherever you possibly can, as every cent helps our survival and I still want to give it back to victims who need some support.
SUSPICIOUS VEHICLES
The red Mazda 323 is still around at various banks - watch out for it and if it follows you, drive immediately to a police station. Other suspicious vehicles at Stanbic Bank Belmont are: Silver Mazda, a Red Datsun and a Toyota pickup - AAA 6899. If you see a vehicle outside a property near your home, with one or two guys inside, and you know it does not belong in that area, phone respective neighbours to check and then phone the police. DO NOT attempt to ask them yourself, they could be armed.
WATCHERS
There are a great deal of vehicles being stolen from homes at all hours of the day and night. I would like to suggest to those who would like to offer their services of being a "watcher" in their particular suburb or route to work, that they get in touch with me with their full name, address and phone number who I could then phone and if a car has been stolen in that particular area, then I can contact that person who could then look out for it. I have the maps so can plot a radius and the "watchers" could just look out for it. If you are interested in helping each other, and help these poor people get their only cars back, get in touch with me. All details are confidential and if you are not interested in contacting the police, when you have located a vehicle, just phone me and I will deal with the police directly.
HOT LINES
Tracey Burns direct: 011-701 323
Immediate assistance: 62611 EMRAS and information passed onto Police and myself.
SUPPORT GROUP
Please keep the third Tuesday of every month free at 2:00 pm, for the support group if you are a victim of hijacking, attempted hijack and house robberies. We are there for each other and we do not charge victims who contact us for care-giving. So please call me to confirm you are attending. The service is all free, that is why we depend on the public and private sectors to help us survive.
TALKS
Please contact me for any talks for schools, companies, groups or questions on individual security, etc on crime@mweb.co.zw or cell phone no: 011-701 323 for your bookings.

Subject: RE: CHILD DEATHS

How many young children are killed or maimed for life, due to the irresponsibility and thoughtlessness of their parents?

We all claim to care so much for our offspring, and yet many of us simply cannot see the need to restrain children with seatbelts in their cars.

Just the other day, I drove alongside a young mother whose 2 to 3 year old child was standing between the front bucket seats of her car. She ignored my appeal. Any road incident such as a dog on the road, would result in the mother slamming on the breaks before thinking of her child being propelled virtually at the speed that the car was travelling, forwards onto the dashboard or onto or through the windscreen. The consequences of those few seconds would be too terrible to bear for the rest of one's life. If you see an unrestrained children in a car, wind down your window and politely ask the driver to do the sensible thing.

Which is Cleaner - a Soda Can or a Toilet Seat?

This incident happened recently in North Texas . We need to be even more careful everywhere. A woman went boating one Sunday, taking with her some cans of cold drink which she put in the refrigerator of the boat. On Monday she was taken into Intensive Care Unit and on Wednesday she died.
The autopsy revealed a certain Leptospirosis caused by the can of cold drink from which she had drunk, not using a glass. A test showed that the can was infected by dried rat urine and hence the disease Leptospirosis.
Rat urine contains toxic and deathly substances. It is highly recommended to wash thoroughly the upper part of soda cans before drinking out of them as they have been stocked in warehouses and transported straight to the shops without being cleaned.
A study at NYCU showed that the tops of soda cans are more contaminated than public toilets (i.e).. full of germs and bacteria. So wash them with water before putting them to the mouth to avoid any kind of fatal accident.

7 AUGUST 2005 ALL ZIMBABWEAN CHRISTIANS ( & those who support their cause) WHEREVER THEY MAY BE, WILL BE FASTING FOR ZIMBABWE UNTIL 4PM . PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO EVERY ZIMBABWEAN CHRISTIAN YOU KNOW. DO NOT BE THE ONE WHO DOESN'T PASS ON THIS MESSAGE.

Is your son or daughter having difficulty with A Level Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry?

Do the A Level classes contain 30 students rather than 10? Classes this size do not allow for much individual help.

If so, I can coach your son or daughter in the above subjects, having had 35 years experience teaching these subjects. I take only one student at a time, which ensures that the student has individual attention and help.

I also offer computer courses in MS Windows operating system, MS Word word processing, MS Excel spreadsheet, MS Access database, MS Project Project Design, desk top publishing, AutoCAD computer aided design, MS Outlook Express e-mail, Internet browsing and search, Corel Draw, Corel PhotoPaint graphic design and digital photography. I am looking for a V.90 56K Standard Fastlink Modem. It is one of the first external modems to come out and up until now was available in South Africa. Why!!!! one would ask !!!! Well I live on a farm at Turk Mine and due to the line (or lack of one from time to time) this modem seems to be the only compatible one for out here!!! I have two brand new modems one a Duxbury 56k and one USB e-modem UM9100-W which I am willing to swap or if you have one of these modems laying around and have no use for it I am willing to pay for it.

I can be contracted by e-mail portwe@mweb.co.zw or phone 085 284 or if you cannot get through you can leave a message with Gay Wilde @ 09 68910 Monday,Wednesday & Friday 8.00 to 13.00pm. Many thanks Midge Joubert.
