Recognising a stroke - A true story:

Susie stumbled and fell. Her friend, Sherry, saw this happen. Being very concerned, she had the insight to ask Susie the 3 questions below. Suzie failed all three test-questions, so 911 was called. Even though she had normal blood pressure readings and did not appear to be suffering a stroke (she could converse to some extent with the Paramedics) they took her to the hospital right away. Susie suffered brain damage after a massive stroke, but is recouping at an incredible pace .

So simple - this literally saved Susie's life - Some angel had previously sent this advice to Suzie's friend and she followed it exactly. Read and Learn the 3 steps!
A stroke occurs when oxygen fails to reach some part of the brain. Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim will ( - WILL! -) suffer brain damage if people nearby fail to recognise the symptoms of a stroke, and take action. Now doctors say a bystander can recognise a stroke by asking the victim three simple questions:
*Ask the individual to SMILE.
*Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
*Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE coherently (e.g. "It is sunny out today").
If he or she has trouble with ANY of these tasks, call 911 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could identify facial weakness / arm weakness / and speech problems, researchers now urge the general public to learn the three questions. They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting last February. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage.
A cardiologist says that if everyone who gets this email sends it to another 10 people, you can bet that at least one life will be saved !

CRIME AWARENESS - BULAWAYO UPDATE - written and compiled by Tracey Burns 20/05/05
British Statesman in the 18th Century - Edmunde Burke said "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing."
WELL DONE must go out to the police and what they have recovered of stolen property in the last few weeks, and arresting men, some going away for a long, long time in prison.
RUMOURS AND DOGS
I have to reiterate, will the Bulawayo public stop rumour mongering, it is causing problems to each of us living here. I have been informed by the police to make sure that the police station under your specific area must be told of dogs being poisoned, so that they can investigate and make sure that patrols are placed in those areas and more importantly, to catch the people poisoning the dogs.
SUSPICIOUS VEHICLES
Many people have reported to me about the Metallic Blue minibus, tinted windows, sometimes with number plates on, seen on the Matopos Road between Cecil and 23rd Avenues. Please continue to report to me about suspicious vehicles, so that I can place it in my updates, as this definitely makes people more aware of their surroundings and I feel that the public has a right to know.
TIPS OFF (SUGGESTION BOXES AT POLICE STATIONS)
Please either report to your police station or if you are not wanting to deal directly with the constables, put it in writing (remaining anonymous) and place into the suggestion boxes anything that you feel uneasy about, whether it is a suspicious car, suspicious men sitting in vehicles or sitting on street corners, etc. Believe me, those suggestion boxes are checked every day and a proper police docket is opened and investigation takes place immediately. If you report to me, I can only mention it to the police, but nothing will be done, as they class it as hear say from me.
SMASH AND GRAB AREAS
Please note that around Revenue Hall and the block around Haddon & Sly buildings have gangs with individuals that walk past your car windows and smash the window to grab whatever is lying on your seat, from cardigans to small brief cases to shopping left on the floor. These men are so blatant about it so be on the look out even when you are sitting at the traffic lights of 9th Ave/Fife St. This is a terrible inconvenience when really all your belongings should be in the boot of the car!
POST TRAUMATIC STRESS
I want the public to know, that Post Traumatic Stress is on the increase when naturally you have had the unfortunate incident of a terrible crime that has been beset upon you. Please contact me - some victims of hijackings from over 2 years ago, are struggling really hard to come to terms with their hijacking and with the added stress, are making their families go crazy, as they don't know what to do. I am only a phone call away (when the cell network works) or if not, find someone who will give you my home number. I love to help, thus the reason for doing this job, and I have big shoulders for you to cry on and I can always stuff cotton wool into my ears if you need to scream. Don't forget, we also have the support group which really helps you and in the long run will help your family.
ROADS TO BORDERS
Thanks must go to various people who informed me after my last update about the roads to Beit Bridge. If they had not read my update, they said they would have definitely hit the rocks strewn across the road, as at the speeds they were doing could have caused a nasty accident, and yes, the gum poles too were across the roads at other sections. Keep your eyes peeled on all roads not only to Borders but internal roads to various towns as well. DO NOT STOP at lay bys to stretch those legs, far too many people have lost all their luggage and sometimes their vehicle as well.
APPEAL FOR SPONSORSHIP
Yet again, I have to appeal for sponsorship - I only have enough money for the Trust to last maybe another 5 months in Bulawayo, and then I will have to close it. I have already approached a number of companies personally to help with $ 100 000-00 a month and to date nothing forthcoming. I spoke to a group of gentlemen recently who did not realise that the Bulawayo Trust is totally on its own. Meaning I need to find someone to print the pamphlets I use for my talks. The monetary side of the Trust is for my salary, fuel and payment on cell and landlines. I have wanted to employ someone on a part time basis and her function would be to find sponsors, but I feel guilty that I cannot even pay something towards her time and fuel so I have to decline her offer at present. I myself still do the counselling, the updates, the running of the office, speeches, visit the police and yes, to find sponsors. I am tearing myself into too many pieces at present, so I urge for your help in anyway that you possibly can. I will never be too busy to help a victim, that is my priority and my second is to keep the public informed by my talks and updates.
HOT LINES
Tracey Burns direct: 011-701 323
Immediate assistance: 62611 EMRAS and information passed onto Police
SUPPORT GROUP
Please keep the third Tuesday of every month free at 1:30 pm, for the support group if you are a victim of hijacking, attempted hijack and house robberies. We are there for each other and we do not charge victims who contact us for care-giving. So please call me to confirm you are attending. The service is all free, that is why we depend on the public and private sectors to help us survive.
TALKS
Please contact me for any talks for schools, companies, groups or questions on individual security, etc on crime@mweb.co.zw or cell phone no: 011-701 323 for your bookings.
Tracey Burns

I have spent the afternoon trying to get some humanitarian assistance for the Hatcliffe Extension residents who are now without shelter for the second night and will soon be without food, when they move away from their small kitchen gardens, chickens etc. I am shocked to report that so far, I have not been able to identify a single NGO or other organisation prepared to help, apart from one church - Thank you God for your churches!

International Red Cross reports they only deal with war situations. Zimbabwe Red Cross person in charge of humanitarian assistance forgot cellphone this morning. Zimrights says this is a nation-wide problem, too big for them... and so on.

Please, friends - we need help for about 500 families. We need plastic for shelter and some emergency food-packs, delivered either directly to residents at Hatcliffe Extension New Stands (opposite SIRDC) or to Northside Community Church - attention Destitute Care - or to my home at 4 Ashbrittle Crescent, Emerald Hill. We doubtless also need blankets and jerseys, since it is much colder if you do not have proper shelter.

Thank you for any help you can give.

From: "Brian & Karen FitzPatrick" Subject: Plea for help

Please can you add this into the Morning Mirror for me. Donation will be sent to Edith Duly Nursing Home in Bulawayo. Thank you and God bless.

My name is Karen FitzPatrick and I am trying to raise funds for Mrs Marie Drakes. Marie Drakes has an Abdominal Aorta Aneurysm and an Iliac Aneurysm. Both are life threatening and untreatable in Zimbabwe. The Cardio- vascular surgeon - Professor Veller at the Donald Gordon Clinic at Wits University in Johannesburg, South Africa, has said that Marie must have the operations by September this year at the very latest. She needs ZR 146 905.00 in order to have these done. Unfortunately, both the Walter Sizulu Fund in South Africa and the Heart Foundation in Harare have no funds at this time. The Heart Foundation has very kindly offered to let us use their account for any funds that are forthcoming. I know how amazing the community of this country is from when my family and I were raising funds for Tyler O'Reilly (my brother's baby) in 2003 and am positive I will see that spirit of giving again. Please contact Mrs Charmaine O'Reilly for the details of the Heart Foundation account on oreilly@netconnect.co.zw or myself on fitzpatrick@netconnect.co.zw for copies of the medical documentation. May God bless you as you open your hearts to this very sincere plea.

A brief history on an incredibly amazing school teacher:

3) Marie Drakes taught at the Shabanie Primary School at Zvishavane and became Head Mistress in August 1983. She remained as Head Mistress for 14 years until July 1997
4) The Drakes family moved to Bulawayo in August 1997
5) Marie Drakes became Head Mistress of Henry Low Primary School in September 1997. She remained as Head mistress until December 1999.

Subject: Last shortwave broadcast

It is with much regret that we announce that Tuesday 31st May 2005 is our last shortwave evening broadcast.

The jamming of our transmission signal by the Zimbabwe government has required that we broadcast on multiple frequencies. This has been very successful and our listeners have been able to clearly receive us. But it is financially unsustainable, adding a huge amount to our normal running costs.

As from 1st June 2005 we will, therefore, be on medium wave for two hours in the early morning (5 - 7am Zim time) and 24 hours a day on our website www.swradioafrica.com
Unfortunately our medium wave signal does not cover the whole of Zimbabwe and many of our faithful listeners will no longer be able to hear us. Our future even on medium wave remains critical and in the balance, but we are doing everything we possibly can to maintain our financial viability. Our medium wave signal is clearly received throughout the whole of South Africa so we do know that the two to three million Zimbabwean exiles there will be able to clearly receive our programming. A free media is the cornerstone of any democracy and we will do our very best to ensure that we continue to provide a voice for Zimbabweans, as we struggle along this difficult road to freedom together. A luta continua (the struggle continues) was the slogan of African liberation movements. Sadly it's a slogan that is still applicable to Zimbabwe.

I just want to send sincere congratulations to Joy Van Rensburg for her production of "My Fair Lady" as from an old producer who has produced many plays in this country, then Rhodesia, in Salisbury ( Harare,) Chipinge, Sinoia, Selukwe and Gweru. I know the amount of time, thought, imagination, work she must have spent on this production and, to have had such a success in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, at this time with shortages of petrol and many other items and with so many difficulties and problems, I feel she deserves special congratulations for entertaining us all so excellently at a time when we all needed cheering. Congratulations from one who acted in one of the very first plays produced in Bulawayo ( I was Wendy in "Peter Pan" produced by Mrs Coleman in the Theatre in 1938 !) Thank you, Joy Van Rensburg for keeping up drama in Bulawayo from Joy Maclean !

I wonder if anyone would be interested in having a personalised CD with music of their own choice? I can't do the classics, but popular music from the 50's, 60's, 70's and so on. You can get about twenty tunes on a normal CD. I don't profess to have every tune ever brought out, but if you give me a list of, say, 30 tunes, I could do quite a high percentage of them. This would make a super gift for someone to recall the good old days. I can be contacted at : glyntonybw@zol.co.zw

Can You Help..

We are about to leave the country, the government will only renew our work permit at a hefty cost, far beyond our reach ( $122,500,000.00 ) so we are DESPERATELY trying to get our house maid a job in the Hillside, Morningside or Burnside area, as her son goes to school at Hillside Junior, and we have paid his school fee's up until December 2005.

Her name is Sebo, she is the MOST TRUST WORTHY person you could ever wish to have, and comes HIGHLY recommended.

She has worked for us since 1999, and it is with sadness that we have to lose her in this manner...!! We would really APPRECIATE IT, if some one could give her a job, to keep her son at school, failing this, she has to move to Shangani Mine, to join her husband. I can be contacted from 8am to 4pm on 233864 Monday to Wednesday ( Darryl ) , from Thursday onward, you can speak to Tanya.., thanks

1. There is someone in Bulawayo who has a desk with no drawers in it! A few Saturdays ago a truck was transporting a desk and when it turned the corner in town, the drawers flew out of the desk! I happened to see it and quickly picked the drawers up from off the road, expecting the car to come back. I waited and it didn't! The desk is no good without the drawers, so if the person reads this, please contact Ged Young - 091 313943 to arrange collection of them!
2. We are a family of four who are in the position of looking for accommodation again as the house we have been renting for the last 5 years is being sold. Ideally we would like a house in the Hillside/Malindela/Bradfield area - but will have a look at other areas and of course, a long lease and affordable rent would be super as well.
Please contact either Ged Young - 091 313943 or Rene Young - 091 269272. Thank you.
