I just want to send sincere congratulations to Joy Van Rensburg for her production of "My Fair Lady" as from an old producer who has produced many plays in this country, then Rhodesia, in Salisbury ( Harare,) Chipinge, Sinoia, Selukwe and Gweru. I know the amount of time, thought, imagination, work she must have spent on this production and, to have had such a success in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, at this time with shortages of petrol and many other items and with so many difficulties and problems, I feel she deserves special congratulations for entertaining us all so excellently at a time when we all needed cheering. Congratulations from one who acted in one of the very first plays produced in Bulawayo ( I was Wendy in "Peter Pan" produced by Mrs Coleman in the Theatre in 1938 !) Thank you, Joy Van Rensburg for keeping up drama in Bulawayo from Joy Maclean !

MARS SPECTACULAR!

The Red Planet is about to be spectacular! This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the Last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as 60,000 years before it happens again.

The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75-power magnification

Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m.

By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30a.m. That's pretty convenient to see something that no human being has seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month.

Share this with your children and grandchildren. NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS AGAIN

It is with much regret that we announce that Tuesday 31st May 2005 is our last shortwave evening broadcast.

The jamming of our transmission signal by the Zimbabwe government has required that we broadcast on multiple frequencies. This has been very successful and our listeners have been able to clearly receive us. But it is financially unsustainable, adding a huge amount to our normal running costs.

As from 1st June 2005 we will, therefore, be on medium wave for two hours in the early morning (5 - 7am Zim time) and 24 hours a day on our website www.swradioafrica.com

Unfortunately our medium wave signal does not cover the whole of Zimbabwe and many of our faithful listeners will no longer be able to hear us.

Our future even on medium wave remains critical and in the balance, but we are doing everything we possibly can to maintain our financial viability.

Our medium wave signal is clearly received throughout the whole of South Africa so we do know that the two to three million Zimbabwean exiles there will be able to clearly receive our programming.

A free media is the cornerstone of any democracy and we will do our very best to ensure that we continue to provide a voice for Zimbabweans, as we struggle along this difficult road to freedom together.

A luta continua (the struggle continues) was the slogan of African liberation movements. Sadly it's a slogan that is still applicable to Zimbabwe.

Dear Friends and Fellow Farmers
An update on Vehicle Licences.
The regulations recently published on the new "Safety" style of number plates for change of vehicles and new vehicle registrations have now been extended to all vehicles on the road. A summary of the requirements follows and we would urge farmers to attend to these as soon as possible.
The cost of the new number plates is currently $600,000.00 a pair i.e. $50,000.00 for the plate and $100,000.00 for the registration book, including the security windscreen sticker (or third party). The procedure to change the number plates is as follows:-
1) Obtain CVR4 form from Municipality
2) Obtain Police Clearance using the CVR4 form.
3) Within 14 days take documents etc, listed below to Revenue Hall for issue of new plates:-
a) CVR4 Form with Police Clearance Stamp.
b) Clearance from Revenue HAll on outstanding traffic fines.
c) Vehicle Registration Book
d) Insurance Cover Note
e) Old Licence Disc
f) Proof of Residence rates or telephone account etc)
g) Old Number Plate
h) $600000.00 in cash
The new number plates are available in three sizes- "long" "square and "Japanese" (plus motorcycle size) AA has had confirmation from Harare there will be no new increase in costs "in the foreseeable future"
The new windscreen sticker (i.e.) the third plate must not be marked in any way except with the car registration number printed there by the Municipality. Please confirm at the Revenue Hall where it should be placed on the windscreen as it appears that there are several different "specific" areas which have been indicated as the "spot". It should also be noted that each time a vehicle changes ownership new numbers are issued.!.

My grandpa, Robin MacGregor, forwarded me your email address as he says that you are involved in some kind of a newsletter and that you might be able to help me in my search for lifts between Bulawayo and Mutare. I will be staying in Bulawayo between the 26 June and 18 July, but at some stage, my boyfriend and I would be grateful to find a lift to Mutare and back to Bulawayo again. I've got family in Mutare so it would be nice to spend about 10 days there. So if you hear of anyone who will be travelling and willing to give us lifts at some stage during this time, that would be really helpful. Unfortunately we will not have our own transport in Zim and the only decent bus service only travels between Bulawayo and Harare, so we are really relying on reliable lifts to get us back and forwards.

If you can help us in anyway, that would be greatly appreciated.
