URGENT APPEAL Blood Donations

I am taking this opportunity to write personally to all MWEB subscribers. MWEB has recently completed its year-end and as General Manager of MWEB I would like to thank you for your loyal support throughout the years. It has been a year fraught with challenges for the telecommunications industry, but also a year in which we saw a significant upgrade in bandwidth provision by TelOne. However I am writing to you today to appeal for support of a different kind.

Yesterday a tragedy unfolded, a tragic event that could have been avoided, one that led to the unfortunate loss of life. I overheard a conversation at lunchtime at Royal Harare Golf Course. A woman was on her cell phone and was looking for a person whose blood group was B+. My blood group is B+, so I approached her. She said that someone desperately needed surgery, but there was no B+ blood available. The operation, unfortunately could not take place until a donor with that particular blood type was found. I went to the Avenues and rushed up the stairs to ICU to donate my blood. As I arrived on the 3rd floor I was met by the family outside ICU and was told that the person needing the blood transfusion had passed away 3 minutes ago. The family had been desperately searching for a donor since 10h00 that morning.

3 minutes! That is tragic! If I had known about this desperate need for blood, I could have arrived at the hospital sooner, and managed to save a life. Instead I was eating lunch, entertaining clients, when someone needed my blood less than 2km away!! I could have made a difference if only I had known, more to the point - if only someone had known how to get hold of me.

The country is desperate for blood. Even if one is a regular donor, this does not guarantee that there will be adequate stock when it's needed most.

The young man in need of blood had been involved in a car accident on Harare Drive earlier that morning. He had been haemorrhaging and they needed to operate to save his life but could not do so without blood. What I wish to propose is a three-point plan, which needs your support and action in order to make a difference;

1) Blood Donation Day. MWEB will arrange a blood donation day at Meikles next week. MWEB will provide you with free parking, tea and biscuits and a 10% discount on one month's subscription if you come and donate blood. Any new subscribers joining and donating on the same day will receive 1 month's service for free. So tell someone and bring them along!

2) Database. MWEB will collate a database of people's contact details, landline, cell and blood group, as well as their residential area. If ever the urgent need for blood arises, this web-based database can then be logged into and the type of blood can be searched for. The database will come back with a list of all the people with that particular blood group in the area nearest to you, and all their contact details. This facility could be the difference between life and death. Anyone with Internet will have access to it.

3) Capture your details online. Once preparations for a website dedicated to this blood donor database are complete, (a week from now) you will be able to log onto http://www.mweb.co.zw/bloodbank. and capture your details online. All you then have to do is be available and prepared to donate blood to save a life in an emergency.

We will send out another email to let you know at what times and in what room at the Meikles Hotel, the blood donation exercise will be carried out. We hope to have this database up and running within the next 10 days, and we appeal to you to please help us to help save lives.

Lets make a difference through making this work. If you have any queries or require further information please contact us at MWEB on (04) 25 33 33

I look forward to your response and action.
Regards
Mike Ehret
GENERAL MANAGER
MWEB Zimbabwe

MY FAIR LADY PRESENTED BY BULAWAYO THEATRE CLUB

17 MAY TO 28 MAY

BOOK AT BULAWAYO THEATRE.

DONT MISS THIS TIMELESS FAVOURITE

IS IT A STROKE?

A woman had a mild stroke a while back. She had driven to the garage to have her car worked on. She tried to talk to the mechanic and she could not speak. She did not know anything was wrong until this happened. They took her right to the hospital and she has since made a full recovery.

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognise the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognise a stroke by asking three simple questions:
1. Ask the individual to smile.
2. Ask him or her to raise both arms.
3. Ask the person to speak a simple sentence. Or ask the person to 'stick out' his/her tongue...if their tongue is NOT 'straight' but goes off to one side that is another indication of a stroke.
If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call your local emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the general public to learn the three questions.

They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting last February. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this email sends it to 10 people, you can bet that at least one life will be saved. Tell as many people as possible about this. It could save their lives!

PLEASE SEND THIS ARTICLE TO AS MANY FRIENDS AS POSSIBLE!

Greetings! Thank you very much to all of you who have subscribed to THE ZIMBABWEAN. We are now two months old. Despite much sabre-rattling from Harare we are still selling ut there every Friday and have upped the number going in to 15 000 a week. We have received several reports of the paper being sold second-hand for up to ZD10 000! (The cover price is ZD5000). We have always made a huge loss on this part of the operation and now our couriers have just upped their freight bill from Joburg to Harare by almost 100%.
For every subscription taken out abroad, we can get 100 more newspapers into Zimbabwe. We MUST increase sales in the Diaspora, particularly in the UK. Surely this is the least we can do for our suffering countrymen and women - make it possible for them to get some independent, accurate news at an affordable price? We are totally dependent on sales in the Diaspora to keep us going.
Our search for donor funding continues, but regretfully largely in vain.
We have been disappointed with the level of sales so far. Our choice of W H Smith as distributors may be at fault but that's the way things are done here. Three or four copies of The Zimbabwean are carried by 6000 W H Smith outlets throughout the UK finding the Zimbabweans to buy them has been like hunting for a needle in a haystack (despite helpful statistics from the Census office).
So we appeal to you: Please help! Please buy the paper if you ever see it. Please badger your local WH Smith to order you a copy. Please subscribe (online at www.thezimbabwean.co.uk) Please take out a subscription for somebody you know who would be interested. Please persuade your company, local library, college or other institution to purchase a subscription. Please tell everyone you know about The Zimbabwean. Please help us to make a difference back home.
Information is power, which is why the present regime is so hell-bent on preventing accurate information getting to the people. The paper is also now available in SA via Exclusive Books, CNA and RNA in the main centers. We also offer subscriptions from Joburg via Johnnic. Please also encourage those you know in SA to agitate for copies and to buy the paper wherever they see it.
No-one is an island. We need your help please.
Sincerely
Wilf & Trish

The Lady in Pink

I'd like, through Morning Mirror, to thank a young lady, wearing pink, who walked up and down the slowest ever, long petrol queue, as it crawled its way to the pumps, in the Retreat Shopping area on Saturday 23 June. Anxious motorists waited and waited and waited in their thirsty vehicles and The Lady in Pink walked up and down to tell us it would be OK, despite the chaos that reigned - that we would get 20 litres each. We didn't all get this, but The Lady in Pink made the "journey"more pleasant and less stressful. Thank you Lady in Pink, and I hope you and your family get this message and went home with fuel in your tanks!

I thought you would like to put this in your Morning Mirror it is from my daughter Marie who lives in Sydney Australia with her husband Derek and new born son Liam, but her heart is in Zimbabwe, I know there are lots of mothers and fathers out there who wake up everyday like us heart sore that our children are so far away and we cant watch them develop through life and see our grandchildren grow. We can only snatch what little time we have with them on the phone on the internet or watching them through web cams but cant touch them or hear them, life sucks sometime, I am one of the lucky ones my daughter is coming out in June for two months with her baby, but what happens after that when she goes back the heartaches begin again.

Regards

Andrea
HOMELAND

Within my soul, within my mind,
There lies a place I cannot find.
Home of my heart. Land of my birth.
Smoke-coloured stone and flame-coloured earth.
Electric skies. Shivering heat.
Blood-red clay beneath my feet.
At night when finally alone,
I close my eyes - and I am home.
I kneel and touch the blood-warm sand
And feel the pulse beneath my hand
Of an ancient life too old to name,
In an ancient land too wild to tame.
How can I show you what I feel?
How can I make this essence real?
I search for words in dumb frustration
To try and form some explanation,
But how can heart and soul be caught
In one-dimensional written thought?
If love and longing are a "fire"
And man "consumed" by his desire,
Then this love is no simple flame
That mortal thought can hold or tame.
As deep within the earth's own core
The love of home burns evermore.
But what is home? I hear them say,
This never was yours anyway.
You have no birthright to this place,
Descendant from another race.
An immigrant? A pioneer?
You are no longer welcome here.
Whoever said that love made sense?
"I love" is an "imperfect" tense.
To love in vain has been man's fate
From history to present date.
I have no grounds for dispensation,
I know I have no home or nation.
For just one moment in the night
I am complete, my soul takes flight.
For just one moment....then it's gone
And I am once again undone.
Never complete. Never whole.
White Skin and an African soul.

London Grumbling:-

Freebies:- Although you have your free Metro newspaper, you're still in London's rat-race. You have only seconds to read it while walking along the pavement to work, to glance at the headlines, read the cartoons, your daily stars - and throw the 60 page paper in the bin. But today on the center page below the cartoons, I saw a coupon for a "free cup of coffee and breakfast bagel with bacon, omelet & cheese" at McDonald's restaurant. There's a McDonald's near every tube station in London. Deciding I couldn't be fired for not arriving at work 3 hours early, I popped into Mc Donald's & exchanged the coupon for a free breakfast - McDonald's want everyone to come in and see their new salad/fruit/healthy menu's, compared to their old fatty/burger products - I can just imagine how happy a kid is going to be to get 'delicious raw carrot sticks - 59p' (Yuk!) instead of his favorite cheese/gherkin/tomato-sauce hamburger from McDonald's!

Anyhow, the tables in the restaurant have "Easyinternet computers" on them, so you can check your emails while eating. However, I couldn't sit down at a table - because all Londoners are boycotting "Easyinternet computers"... you see Easyinternet undercut the Internet-Cafe competition and put them all out of business in Central London. With the last of Easyinternet's opposition going bankrupt and closing down last week, Easyinternet suddenly quadrupled their Internet prices - so Londoners are boycotting Easyinternet! And this is a big thing... in-case you don't know - its not a wise idea to surf the Internet or look at your personal emails while at work in London - each company employs someone specifically to "spy" on everything you do on your computer at work - they fire "slackers" not working every minute of the day!! So people either secretly "Text" each other on their mobile phones or sneak out for a 'smoke break' & use t! he Easyinternet computers round the corner to stay in contact.

So it was out of McDonalds and off round the corner to the free Public Library to use their free Internet computers - there is a free Public Library next to every church on every block in London. You are allowed to use a computer for free, for an hour a day - just type in your Library number/password. Its all paid for from your exorbitantly astronomical Council rates/taxes! Last year the Libraries found they were empty, so following the trend in America, they changed with the times, removed bookshelves and installed dozens of Internet computers & now the libraries are one of the busiest places around & are open 7 days a week. The problem is you're still not allowed to eat in a library and they will probably throw me out when they spot me eating my free McDonalds breakfast... moan, munch, slurp, grumble...

Comment:- I'm not sure what's worse: going to a shop and finding the shelves scarcely full in Byo, ...or the doors always being locked when you get to a well stocked shop at midnight in London? Working for almost nothing from 6am till midnight, 7 days a week - including Easter & Christmas day - as an illegal immigrant in a foreign country - you almost live on sun-rays and moon-beams. No time to dream of finishing work at 4:20pm and having weekends off to go shopping... like one did in Bulawayo... Moan, grumble, moan.

Today:- A friend from Umtali, who lives down the road in London, died this morning. Living in a self-imposed exile can be lonely, having to pick up the pieces and make a new life, new friends... Do any of his new neighbours/community know what a great kid/husband/father he was? Probably not. Will anyone attend his funeral? Probably not. Is there a sadder story to tell? Probably not. Deaths in a foreign country are so painful, they are papered over and never mentioned. I'll have to allocate some worrying time to wonder who's life is more important - the one life of a person in exile with no money, no pension and worrying till he died of ulcers... or the life of the person who forced him to flee his belovered country - that person in Harare, riding in helicopters, limos, surrounded by fatcats squandering the nations wealth? I guess no one really cares and with a totally 100% useless opposition party, people will just carry on leaving and dying. Make sure you enjoy every minute of every day, you only get one body to see you though 100 summers - and if you don't take care of that body, you'll be parking it on the compost heap early!

Weather:- its raining - just enough to dirty the windows - 90 times a day! Moan, grumble, moan...
