PETER'S APPEAL.
Peter Rollason would like sincerely to thank all those wonderful people who responded to his appeal for assistance with a vehicle. At present, he has the use of a car for a couple of weeks, while the owner is away on leave. As from the middle of the month, would you believe a firm offer of a car on permanent loan from a wellwisher, someone in Bulawayo. This magnificent gesture is more than backed up by two other similar offers. There is still a magnificent generosity in Bulawayo.

Some of these names will be familiar. Wissam Boustany was here a little over four years ago, the New Englanders three years ago - and those with long memories may remember Evgenia-Maria, an outstanding young Bulgarian violinist who was here nearly twenty years ago! Kristian Chong and Daniel Hill are both young pianists at the outset of what promise to be exciting careers (and both have studied with Piers Lane) and Barbara Fusco and Christopher Schuman have established reputations in the USA. We're also delighted to feature local performers in the shape of the Peterhouse Girls Choir and Lorna Kelly and Paul Silversides so, as I said, a very good year - better, perhaps, than we have any right to expect! In addition, Wissam Boustany will be playing with the BPO and we hope to arrange a concert involving Kristian Chong and the orchestra as well. (And you might like to know that 2006 is looking promising too with return visits from Libby Wallfisch, Nokuthula Ngwenyama and Leslie Howard already pencilled in as well as another exciting young pianist, Danny Driver.)

Bulawayo Public Library is one of the few social services still operating to a high standard in the city, but is suffering from a huge drop in its grant income because its City Council grant, which formerly covered 50% of its running costs, has now shrunk to less than 1% due to inflation.

Although the Library has increased its charges and started new services such as an Internet cafe, which has seen income increase from Z$6 million in 2002 to Z$350 million in 2004, staff salaries are now only half the amount paid to staff in other local libraries and we are seeing senior staff leave to work in the Municipal Libraries, which pay double the Public Library salaries.

The Public Library currently has 17,000 users - the highest it has ever had in its history, and close to 300,000 books are borrowed every year, but inflation and the resulting drop in the value of grants are making it difficult to survive.

We think there are many people who read your magazine who are past or present members of the Library but who don't realise the problems it faces. The Library is not run by the Municipality or the Government, it is a co-operative owned and run by its own members, and is registered as a charity, so there is no parent body to go to for help.

We would like to hear from any of your readers who might be willing to make even a small donation to help sustain the Library. Z$ payments can be made by cheque payable to Bulawayo Public Library, 100 Fort Street, Bulawayo.

The Library provides a unique service to the whole of Bulawayo community, including Braille books for blind readers, video tapes, student textbooks, children's books, a public Internet service, talking books on cassettes, recreational reading, an educational advisory service, mobile libraries serving 33 local primary schools, and a good reference department, Bulawayo needs a service like this badly, and would appreciate any help which might be forthcoming from Morning Mirror readers to sustain it.

To commemorate her 69th birthday on October 1, actress/vocalist Julie Andrews made a special appearance at Manhattan's Radio City Music Hall for the benefit of the AARP. One of the musical numbers she performed was "My Favorite Things" from the legendary movie "Sound Of Music."

However, the lyrics of the song were deliberately changed for the entertainment of her "blue hair" audience. Here are the lyrics she recited:

Breast cancer breakthrough excites scientists By Steve Connor, Science Editor 14 April 2005

A drug that can destroy tumours with minimal side-effects could offer a breakthrough in the treatment of breast cancer.

Tests on animals have shown the drug prevents the growth of tumours so effectively that clinical trials on humans will start within months, scientists said yesterday.
The drug is called a PARP inhibitor and is targeted to work against tumours caused by the inherited forms of breast cancer which result from mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.
Women carrying mutations in either of those genes have up to an 85 per cent chance of developing breast cancer by the age of 70. There is no specific treatment other than a prophylactic mastectomy.

The letter published about the Northlea Re-union was private not intended for general distribution and Quentin Gibson would like to apologise to Carole Broughton for the breach of confidence in having published what was a personal letter and the resultant unsolicited mail.

I am writing in the hope that you can help me a mission I am on. I am trying to find if at all possible a Rhodesian Newspaper dated 16th July 1965. It would be even better if it was from the Bulawayo area.

My name is Trevor Lazenby and I live in the UK. I have a friend who is 40 this year. She was born in Rhodesia on 16th July 1965. She was adopted at 16 days old, her family moved to England during the problems of the early 70's. She has certain memories of Rhodesia but not many.
I thought it would be nice if I could get a Newspaper from the day she was born, as a momento.
Having said that I am not quite sure what Newspapers were in existence at that time and are any of them still in existence today ? Do there Records go back that far ? Or have they been destroyed.
I am contacting you because I have been searching the Internet without much success so far, I found your website and of course you are conected with the journalism industry therefore I find myself imposing myself on .

So could I please formally ask if you tell me which newspapers were available in the 1960's and what you think my chances of getting a Newspaper from that era are? Or failing that can you perhaps point me in the right direction.
