S.P.C.A - THANK YOU BULAWAYO RESIDENTS FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT OF OUR ORGANISATION

DEE BLOOR FROM THE SPCA SHOP SITUATED NEXT TO CHAIR CRAZY IN ROBERT MUGABE WAY, BETWEEN 14TH/15TH AVENUE WOULD WELCOME ANY UNWANTED SECOND HAND GOODS I.E. HOUSEHOLD ITEMS, BOOKS CLOTHES, SPORTS GOODS ETC. WE INVITE YOU TO COME AND BROWSE AROUND THE SHOP. WE HAVE MANY ITEMS OF INTEREST INCLUDING A MAHJONG SET, AT REASONABLE PRICES.

LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ALL AT OUR SHOP. WITH MANY THANKS FROM ALL OUR LOST AND HOMELESS, POOCHES, PUSSIES AND OTHER PETS AT THE SPCA.

S.P.C.A. - We speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. We would like to thank the Bulawayo Public for their continued support of which without we could not have survived. We continue to treat thousands of animals and our Inspectors unfortunately are never short of Cruelty cases to investigate. We now on a National level have four Regional Inspectors which cover Masvingo/Manicaland, Matabeleland North and South, Mashonaland East and Central, Mashonaland West and Midlands. With the majority of Volunteers having left, our donor base destroyed and we have had to cope with the demise of 5 S.P.C.A. in the last two years. Bulawayo Branch now taking over Gwelo and Hwange as Satellite branches. We are very happy to report that we have had a very positive response from the Business section in Gwelo, our Regional Inspector and Chairperson of Bulawayo Glynis Vaughan has been travelling to these Centre with our Vet and a marked improvement has been noted.

We are again holding our Annual Scruffs Dog Show at the Horse Arena in the Show-grounds on the 29th May 2005. Anybody that wishes to have a stall we are only charging $50000.00 but requested that you bring your own tables and Chairs The more the merrier. Lets make it a big one.

I am sure that most of you are aware that we have a S.P.C.A. Shop in Robert Mugabe Street run by Mrs Helen Williams, a remarkable lady who has given much of her time for many years to raise much need money for the animals, Mrs Williams and her term of Volunteers are there from Monday afternoons through to Saturday Lunch. [We have been told that they do go home to sleep] We thank these Ladies who give so willingly without reward. We would ask the Bulawayo people to continue to spring-clean and give us all your unwanted goodies, it is amazing what we sell. If you have no transport we would be happy to collect goods. We can be contacted at the S.P.C.A. Kennels on 66578 or 66593. Our most sincere thanks once again.

What is Man without the Beast,
If all the beast were gone
Man would die from a great loneliness of spirit,
For whatever happens to the beast
Also happens to the man.
All things are connected.
Whatever befalls the Earth
Befalls the Sons of the earth.

PETER NEEDS HELP

I am sure you will know that I had my car hi-jacked in November. It is quite impossible for me to even consider obtaining another one, and frankly, even a bike is beyond my resources. I am therefore walking to wherever I have to go, which includes one hour each way to work every morning.
I was just wondering if you, or if you know of anyone who might be going away for a week or so, and who might be willing for me to look after their car for them, at the same time giving me some wheels? Luckily I am very fit, but having to walk between 10 and 18 Kms. every day, is becoming a little tiresome. Any help would be most gratefully received.
Thank you so much.
Peter Rollason.

YOU ARE INVITED TO ATTEND A LECTURE entitled

YOUTH: What is the secret of success in life?

sponsored by the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Bulawayo

to be given by Mrs. MARJORIE SCHERER, CSB, of Nairobi, member of the C.S. Board of Lectureship, at N.U.S.T. - The Delta Lecture Hall on SUNDAY, 20th March, at 3 p.m.

IGANYANA ARTS, a Painted Dog Conservation Trust community development project in Dete, which now produces 40 environmentally friendly craft products, is ALWAYS in need of magazines and books with photos and drawings of wildlife and habitat, even if they are just in adverts. If you are getting rid of things or find stacks underfoot, please contact us. We can arrange pickup and transport.

ALSO: we are always in need of scraps of wire - particularly electrical and communication systems types. These are used in our charming products. Again we can organise getting them to us.

COME AND VISIT: we are open to the public so if you are in the area plan to stop by the Arts Centre . We're at #3 Farm Road (you may know the house as the former Landela Chokamella house), near the shops. Look for the sign.

FOR ANY OF THE ABOVE, or more information about our project call Wendy at 018 475 or email at pdcwendy@mweb.co.zw

S.O.A.P. (Supporting Old Age Pensioners)

We would like to advise all our kind donors and other interested parties that the administrative side of S.O.A.P., will move from Clark Road after close of business on 30th MARCH 2005.

Due to increasing business pressures and the fact that he is often out of town attending to farming projects, Mr Pete Abbot has, with regret, decided that he is unable to give S.O.A.P., the time that it needs, and he wishes to hand over the 'reigns' so that SOAP can continue helping our needy Bulawayo pensioners. He will however, continue to be involved in fund raising events, particularly in the sporting area. With the blessing of Pat Donzelli, who with Lyn Abott were the original SOAP constitution founders it has been decided to give all authority to Dave Gill who has been a voluntary helper for almost 3 years and, Louise Campbell who has been with S.O.A.P., since Lyn Abbot sadly passed away. Our new telephone number will be 242455, during the hours of 10am and 4pm Monday to Friday only. In cases of emergencies contact can be made direct to Dave Gill on 023 407 955. Our new box number is; AC 646 ASCOT, BULAWAYO .

We can also be contacted by e-mail at; soap@netconnect.co.zw . These will be the ONLY changes and, deliveries will carry on as normal on the second Wednesday of each month ably assisted as always, by Becky Kay & Trish Wood.

S.O.A.P., now delivers to almost 150 addresses each month and the cost of one single parcel in early March was Z$203,775, a double parcel being Z$383,550. As can be seen this represents a huge outlay every month and we have also increased the size of parcels as much as we possibly can. Incomings now exceed outgoings and we are drawing on capital. We ask donors, past, present, and future to remember S.O.A.P., and all the people that are helped, some who have nothing, we have one pensioner who has a pension of $700 (yes, seven hundred) a month. We thank Hillside Hardware which continues to have a drop off point for goods to be left, also S.O.A.P., cash collection bottles are at Induna Arts, River Cafe and other points. The storage shed belonging to SOAP will remain at 51 Clark Road and all grocery donations can also be left there with Lazarus who will issue a receipt. Any monetary donations can either be sent to PO box AC 646 ASCOT or, please telephone either of the above numbers for collection. Groceries can also be collected.

All of us would like to say a huge thank you, to you, the generous people and businesses of Bulawayo and the surrounding areas for enabling S.O.A.P., to continue now and in future years assisting people who, although having provided for what should be their 'golden years' now face extreme hardships.

Amsallem has the crystalline touch, harmonic genius, passionate romanticism, and clarity of lines you would associate with Jazz pianists Keith Jarrett, Michel Petrucciani and Brad Mehldau. Add Gary Peacock on bass and Bill Stewart on drums and you've got not only an extraordinary talent but a great trio album. Franck Amsallem is a major new artist whose next project I am looking forward to. ( Paul DeBarros, The Seattle Times 'out A Day' review)

Dear All,

This past weekend the Zimbabwe Junior (Squash?) Championships were held. We had a record entry with 210 players entering from all round Zimbabwe. 140 from Mashonaland, 1 from Mutare, 2 from Gweru and 63 from Bulawayo. Last year the same tournament attracted 140 entries. 21 schools were represented.

From this tournament squads for tournaments in South Africa are chosen. The girls events were very poorly attended whereas the boys had record entries in the U/13, 15, 17 and 19 categories. Some very good squash was played and the depth in each age group shows that junior squash is going from strength to strength. A lot of this is because of the interest being taken at many schools and the follow up by the squash teachers.
The winners were as follows:
U/9 boys - K Young U/9 girls S Cumming
U/11 boys - G Cumming U/11 girls - L Van Zuydam
U/13 boys - G Cumming U/13 girls - L Williams
U/15 boys - D Mama U/15 girls - S Travers
U/17 boys - A Hassan U/17 girls - K McTaggart
U/19 boys - C. Heath U/19 girls - R Williams

Both the U/19 winners retained their titles from last year.
The tournament was sponsored by Amanzi Restaurant, who gave caps and engraved plaques to all winners as well as dinner for two gift vouchers to the top two U/17 winners and U/19 winners. Mrs Julia Mama presented the trophies to the winners. Snacks were provided after the presentations.
Regards
S. Heath

I have just had an e-mail from Patty Rebholz whose husband Mark, was one of the pilots of the replica of the Silver Queen that came to Bulawayo in July 1999.

She says..........
'Mark is busy getting the Vimy ready for the final expedition in the "triple crown"- the cross Atlantic flight, which is to take place sometime this June/July. (the first flight was London to Darwin in September 1994 and the second flight was in July 1999) Mark will be with Steve Fosset who has just completed the first non-stop solo flight around the world. (a milestone in aviation history) The flight across the Atlantic is estimated to take 19 hours and will be from St.John's in Newfoundland to Cliffdon in Ireland.'

Patty and Mark were in Ireland looking for a landing place for the Vimy when they heard of the destruction of the Trade Towers in New York in 2001. Mark is a pilot for United Airlines and if he had not taken leave to go to Ireland with Patty he would have been the pilot on Flight-175 which was hijacked out of Boston and crashed into the south tower of the World Trade Centre.

Patty ended her letter by saying that she and Mark pass on their best wishes to the people that they met in Bulawayo and that their thoughts are with us.

THOUGHTS FROM ABROAD

If anyone reading this knows Sandy and Pat Heine [my Godparents], please would they be so kind as to give them this e-mail address. We live in Canada and have been trying to contact them by phone, but are not sure if their number has changed after all these years.
Thanks

SEEKING FRIENDS
We are ex ZIMBABWEANS, now living in Holland, and we would like to get hold of people we used to know in Triangle and who are now living in New Zealand. They are "Porky "and Mary Bredenkamp and their children are Jonathan and Bianca. Porky came to Triangle from Mashaba where he was a fitter on the mines.
If anybody could give us their address, telephone number or Email address we would be most grateful.
Wishing all of you a good Easter week-end and all the best over the election period.

Greetings from Ru, Rinske and Alie van Zeeventer.
