ANTI HIJACK TRUST BULAWAYO UPDATE written and compiled by Tracey

Bulawayo still seems to be quiet, as far as armed hijackings, and house
robberies are concerned, but this does not mean that people must drop
their guard. Quite the opposite, always be awake and aware of your
surroundings and check on your security around the home, office, school
and town.
CHILDREN
Having talked to some primary schools, I wish to cover today some
security measures that you can implement with your children.
- Parents - talk to your children about security, some of the
questions school children asked me, were of real concern to them, and
only you as a family can give them the answers that they need which
pertains to your security. Also children, these days, are very street
wise and they might help you in a situation that you didn't plan, and
you shall be surprised as to their reaction. The children do hear
about people being beaten up and shot at, so don't push it aside saying
that it won't happen to them, just give them the truth (not exaggerated
stories) and the love and security that they know they can rely on you
as their parents.
- Teach children the correct emergency number for your city and how
to use it and NOT abuse it.
- Have all emergency and your office telephone numbers next to the
phone.
- Anti Hijack Trust Bulawayo's number 011-701 323 and EMRAS No.
62611. EMRAS will help get the police and send out an ambulance if all
is required. The Trust will help with the Trauma afterwards.
- Tell them to never talk to strangers, never get into a lift alone
with strangers and never to go to public toilets alone.
- Take your child down to the local police station at the public
relations office and get them to know what an officer in uniform looks
like and to start building up trust in the police again. In general
the officers love meeting children and talking to them.
- Ask the school if they can get police officers to do a talk on
security and how to approach officers when they are in distress.
- If children have to walk home alone, get them to carry a loud
whistle - not one to play with, but one for when they need it.
- Tell them not to walk through bushes, or short cuts where other
people can't see them, but to stick to roads where everyone can see or
hear them .
- Use the children when travelling in the car as another pair/s of
eyes to observe if someone is following you, for them to get a
description of the car, and occupants etc. Make a game out of it,
because they can also try and remember registration numbers.
- Teach children to get out of the car quickly in case of a
hijacking.
- If children have to stay at home alone during your working hours,
teach them how to use your burglar alarm, panic button etc.
- Make them pretend that someone is at home, to the extent of
shouting out "Hello" as they arrive and before getting inside something
to the effect of "Look at what I've got!" This will make someone who
was following or loitering around, believe that there is another person
around.

The first support group for 2005 is on the 15th February at 1:30 pm.
Unfortunately we have lost this venue, due to a company taking over
fully, so we are desperately looking for another venue, if anyone can
assist, please advise me soonest, so that I can inform the victims at
the meeting where the next one will be held. Keep the third Tuesday of
every month free, for the support group if you are a victim of
hijacking, attempted hijack and house robberies. We are there for each
other and we do not charge victims who contact us for care-giving. The
service is all free, that is why we depend on the public and private
sectors to help us survive.
