Bulawayo projects centre

On Friday the 26th of November, the annual graduation ceremony was held at the Bulawayo Projects Centre. The event took place in a large tent and was witnessed by at least 100 members and visitors. In the absence of the invited guest of honour, Mrs. D. Dube of the Mennonite World Conference gracefully stepped in at the last minute and presented the certificates. The staff and members are grateful to both Mrs. and Mr. Dube for the moral and practical support demonstrated by them. A total of 34 members received a one-up business training certificate, while 28 members received certificates for attending various short skills training courses. Two members received a Z$ 500,000 voucher to assist them in externalising their business (see also inside this newsletter). The ceremony culminated in the announcement of the business person of the year, who received a Z$ 300,000 voucher .

NEWS FOR PENSIONERS

"It seems to be little known that in May 2004 Mr. Blunkett, the British Home Secretary, announced that any British citizen born on or before September 2nd,1929, is entitled to a free 10 year passport, but it seems that this ruling was not implemented until October.

I applied for a renewal of my passport in September and the British Consulate in Cape Town gave no hint of any change in charges, though my date of birth was clearly shown on the form as 1927. So I paid the renewal fee of R706. Subsequently a friend saw the announcement in a British newspaper and alerted me to the new ruling and when I collected the passport in October, I immediately requested my refund. I was then told that the 'forms' for this new ruling had not arrived and I would have to wait sometime for a refund. I have subsequently received the refund after I wrote to the British Consul asking for immediate repayment.

I wonder how many British pensioners are aware of this new ruling, because there has been very little publicity about it, even in the expat section of the Weekly British Telegraph. Perhaps you could notify the members of the South African Alliance of British Pensioners of this very welcome concession".

ANTI HIJACK TRUST BULAWAYO UPDATE written and compiled by Tracey Burns 21/01/05
Bulawayo has in deed become quiet in the hijackings and house robbery situation. BUT, I urge all of you not to drop your defences or awareness. This "quietness" tends to happen in January, and starts picking up again in February, escalating in March. In Bulawayo, we have the added worry when Trade Fair comes around, as many gangs tend to emerge from various ports and congregate in Bulawayo. So I ask each one of you to be extremely vigilant in your security both, for vehicles and your homes.

LADIES

- When walking in town or at various shopping centres, walk with a confidence and awareness, that will not allow you to become a victim of "snatch and grab" scenarios, i.e. handbags and cell phones. Do not walk or drive around chatting on the cell phone, this lowers your concentration.
- If you are sitting in a vehicle and get harassed by youths, be brave, (even though you might be a complete nervous wreck inside), show that you will not be intimidated. Even shout at them that you will call the police, or start the car up and move away, collecting a policeman on the way and go back to the area where you were waiting. I have heard and had the experience myself, of women being harassed in town. It is not only happening to whites, but also to black, coloured and Indian women.
- Most of us are too shy to create a disturbance in public when we are harassed and lack the confidence to protest. This is the reason why the harasses take advantage of this. Turn the tables back onto them, and talk loudly eg. How dare you put your hand on me. The harasser will probably stop his action when he realises you have made it known what he is doing and that he might come against some resistance from you and a crowd. Even Street Children try these techniques and some people give into them in case these kids scratch their car. How dare they, and believe it, street justice takes place very quickly here, if you make the public around you aware, but again be careful how you do this.
Do not become a victim of harassers.

SECURITY AT THE WORKPLACE
I have been to a number of companies that let the receptionist deal with huge sums of money, and yet there is no protection for that individual, yet they are the first person that EVERYONE entering into the company meets and those people will see what the receptionist controls within even half an hour of waiting.
Here is a check list to see how secure your company is:
1. Do you control entry into your premises?
2. Do you have an effective identification system for staff and visitors and is it checked regularly?
3. Does the person dealing with the id system keep up to date and know exactly what is expected of him to ask the visitor?
4. Do you have an alarm system?
5. Do you have a panic button strategically placed?
6. Does your receptionist know what to do if faced with an armed intruder?
7. Do you have a security officer or a member of staff dedicated to security?
We have to understand that crime in Zimbabwe is of a very high calibre. A great deal of people who are involved in security are using archaic methods instead of updating members to deal with our first world crime.

SPONSORSHIP
As usual, I am still looking for sponsorship for the Bulawayo Trust. I have met a number of businessmen and women who read these updates, and state how grateful they are for the information, but lets be honest, if I were a consultant, I could charge by the half hour a great deal of money. You are getting this free, so please dig into your pockets this year and contribute, so that I can continue to visit and help victims, give my speeches without charging exorbitant fees and helping each member of the community. I do not like to flog the willing horses and at present the willing horses have helped out a great deal, it is time to spread the load. It is about time Bulawayo public and private sectors started looking after the Trust here.

STOLEN VEHICLE
Please look out for the following vehicle which was stolen on Friday last week:
Make: Datsun 1200 SE
Colour: Ivory
Reg. No: 8-997 D (yes it is an old number)
The young lady is desperate to try and get this back. Speak to people who know of breakage garages where this could have gone for spares.

THANKS
Thank you to the individuals who gave me a street map and I have received a few pins. This is really going to help us keep a watch on what is going on out there. Thank you again.

ANNOUNCEMENT
The Bulawayo Anti Hijack Trust 011-701 323 in Association with Emergency Medical Rescue Ambulance Service (EMRAS) have allowed the Trust to use their 24 hour emergency number 09 -62611. When you become a victim of a hijacking or involved in an armed robbery, you use this number where they will ask the following:
- Nature of Emergency
You state hijacking or attack by armed robberies.
- Location or address
- Nearest cross street or landmark
- number of victims involved
- telephone number you are using
- if ambulance required
EMRAS will automatically notify Central Police Station of the incident, even if you do not require an Ambulance Service. They will then pass the information onto me, if you have not contacted me already, so that I have it for statistics and to help you with your Post Traumatic Stress.

SUPPORT GROUP
We will start up again in February 2005, so keep the third Tuesday of every month free, for the support group if you are a victim of hijacking, attempted hijack and house robberies. We are there for each other and we do not charge victims who contact us for care-giving. The service is all free, that is why we depend on the public and private sectors to help us survive.

TALKS
Please contact me for any talks for schools, companies, groups or questions on individual security, etc on crime@mweb.co.zw or cell phone no: 011-701 323 for your bookings for 2005.
