BULAWAYO UPDATE written and compiled by Tracey Burns 10/12/04
Since my last update, things have gone haywire again. Hijackings,
house robberies and a murder have all taken place, within the last two
weeks, besides the house break-ins that are a regular occurrence.
Again, I would like to reiterate, these criminals are 20 steps ahead of
us, and it is going to be our own awareness and full security that
might prevent these terrible atrocities. Bulawayo, I am trying to WAKE
YOU UP as to how serious the situation really is. You will only
understand how bad the post traumatic stress that victims suffer, only
when you have gone through it yourself, but at present I am trying my
hardest to prevent you going through this ordeal. I want to know what
makes any one of us so special that it won't happen to us!
THE USE OF GUNS
Know your firearms act, if you possess a weapon.
Know who is allowed to use it and where it can be used.
If you charge outside with your weapon, you are antagonizing a
situation that you are not in total control, i.e. not knowing how many
criminals there are and if they do or do not have weapons themselves.
Don't leave your immediate secure perimeter, only use your weapon when
that has been disabled and your life and family members lives have been
threatened.
Your life and loved ones lives are more important than any property.
Seriously, are you going to ask a criminal if the weapon he is carrying
is a toy or not!
You must fire 3 warning shots before shooting at the criminal and
remember, they are more trigger happy than you.
Fire the warning shots into something (no not into the criminal!), i.e.
a wall, to prove to the police that you had done so.
IN THE STREET
I am appalled as to how many people park on the side of the road with
windows down, standing outside of the vehicle a few metres away,
talking to their friends. You are just inviting trouble, and imagine
if it is a gang of 4 or 5 that stop, you will lose 2 vehicles within a
few seconds. It does not matter if the road is busy or quiet, no-one
will want to get involved to help you or recover your car. Think,
before you stop to have that idol chat!
Also, why are people still parking outside properties to nip in for
lunch, or to collect something they have forgotten inside. One person
just down the road from me, does this everyday and once even left his
window open!
When coming out of garages or entrances that have to be secured before
you go on your way, please remember to switch off your ignition, lock
the car and keep the keys. If someone does attack, then at least you
will have a little time to avert his attention in order for you to get
into a safe area or make more certain as to what the criminal looks
like.
IN YOUR HOME
Please make certain that you lock your doors when you are home - thus
the reason I push for you to have strong wrought iron on doors if you
want to leave them open, but make sure the keys are not left in the
locks and only have the door open with the wrought iron locked, in the
area you are at the time. Don't leave other doors open in your home
where the rooms are not occupied. Also if you can set up a system
where you can have the alarm on whilst sitting watching TV, so that it
goes off if these criminals make their way through a bedroom or out of
way area, then even better for you, or sit with your remote panic
button around your neck.
Just remember all Rapid Response teams will not enter your home or
garden until it is safe for them to do so. They do not have weapons
themselves and have their lives to think of as well.
HIJACKED VEHICLE
The following vehicle was hijacked a few weeks ago so be on the lookout
for:
Cream coloured Nissan Sunny Registration number: 489-615 P Model
Year: 1990
as the person would really like to have his car returned, so that he
does not have to travel on foot or catch taxies.
THANK YOU to the following companies for the year 2004:
Genus Electronics
Mr Anonymous
Chaun's Computers
MWEB
Clan
Hillside Hardware
Hubert Davies
Foundation Agencies
Mine Machines

Your support through the year has been most gratefully appreciated and
may our relationships continue into 2005.
To all of Bulawayo, take extra care over the festivities. I will be
here 24 hours if you need me for advice, help or caregiving. Remember
I always need statistics even if you don't want to talk about the
event.
SUPPORT GROUP
We will start up again in February 2005, so keep the third Tuesday of
every month free, for the support group if you are a victim of
hijacking, attempted hijack and house robberies. We are there for each
other and we do not charge victims who contact us for care-giving. The
service is all free, that is why we depend on the public and private
sectors to help us survive.

Wild Dogs found in Bulawayo
In June of 2003, Chipangali was contacted one Saturday afternoon by
a lady, who advised us that she had found five wild dog puppies, at
the Ascot Race Course, in the middle of Bulawayo. At first it seemed
impossible, and after having a number of hoax telephone calls, we
advised her that if that was the case, could she kindly take the pups
to our Town Office. Not, 15 minutes later, we had Viv's wife, Paddy on
the phone, asking us to come and collect five Wild Dog pups which
had been dropped off. So off we went, and collected the pups, placed
them in the nursery after de-worming, de-fleaing & giving them
a general check over for any external parasites or any other ailments.
Three days later we got another phone call from a resident in the
Bulawayo area, advising us that she had found 2 wild dog pups, in the
Woodlands area. On collection we noticed that the pups had to be from
the same litter. We estimated that the pups to be in the region of 3 -
4 months old
They were initially fed cows milk and pronutro mixed together with
chunks of chopped up meat,
from a saucer. Feeding time was often a humorous and fun filled
event, with the seven puppies
being able to devour their supper in a matter of seconds. Later on,
they were introduced to
larger chunks of meat whereupon they were able to tear and rip off
mouth size bites of meat.
Chipangali Wild Dog Research -
As part of our Research Programme, is the study of carnivores in
Zimbabwe, we were fortunate
to have a student from the University of Science & Technology who sole
purpose was to study and monitor the Wild Dogs currently housed at
Chipangali. The aim of the Research was to breed more Wild Dogs so
that their progeny could be released back into the Wild.
Chipangali & Hwange Wild Dog Research -
Chipangali was approached by the Department of National Parks in
collaboration with the Wild Dog Research Unit, in Hwange, as to the
possibility of releasing some of our animals back into the
wild. On Tuesday 23rd November, the Wild Dog Research Unit together
with the assistance of two employees of the Perth Zoo, arrived at
Chipangali to collect four individuals.
Four hand picked animals were driven into our squeeze cage &
immobilised so that they could be loaded into the movement trailer, by
the Chipangali Staff with the assistance of the Perth Zoo employees.
The final group consisted of, 3 males & a female, these four animals
were going to be introduced to a pair already resident at the Wild Dog
Research Facilities in Hwange. The whole aim would be to integrate all
these animals into a coordinated pack for final release back into the
wild.
The release of these animals back into the wild, is a culmination of
three organisations with like minded goals all working together for the
common good of the animals.
Chipangali still has three Wild Dogs under it's current care & if you
would like to adopt one of these animals, Tshoba, Luna or Panther &
hopefully be part of another release exercise in the future please
contact : Janine Garrod : chipangali@netconnect.co.zw
CHIPANGALI MISSION STATEMENT IS WHERE POSSIBLE TO BE ABLE TO RELEASE
ANIMALS BACK INTO THE WILD.
IN THE LAST MONTH AS YOU WILL BE AWARE WE HAVE RELEASED :-
12 VERVET MONKEYS; 1 BABOON; 2 CHEETAH; 1 BROWN HYAENA &
NOW IN THE FUTURE
4 WILD DOGS.
WE WILL KEEP YOU UPDATED AS TO THEIR FINAL RELEASE DATE & HOW THEIR
PREPARATION AND INTEGRATION WITH THE OTHER PACK PROCEEDS.

NEW RUGBY CLUB (UK)
I am getting involved in a Rugby Club which is close to me here in
Fleet Hampshire called Camberley Rugby Club. Now some of you on this
mailing list are involved with Kings Rugby Club, but it is a little too
far from me for me to organise a plan there. I could use your help as
well though.
I am going to get involved in the club and make a small community like
we used to have back at home. The local rugby club here has been
promoted up a league but has not done well and in fact has won, 1 out
of 11 outings. The club has started to dwindle a bit, but still has
rock solid foundations, a great club house and good membership. It is
located in quite a larney area and has the making of a fine Busters
ground.
What I would like to do is make this little place my home. I am getting
a game with them this weekend and have my sights set on playing only a
few games before the end of the season and then going for the coaches
role. There is a negative employment rate out here, so getting jobs for
people coming across from Zimbabwe is no big deal. I am hoping to get
Ross Roberts (Matabeleland), Danisa Mangena (Zimbabwe), Angus Mberi
(Zimbabwe) to come play for us. There are jobs, gym membership, game
and life opportunities to be had if I can do this properly. If we are
going have to live here in England then we might as well live here with
the comforts and support base that we are used to.
I have an opportunity here to do this property. We have a guy on the
committee who works at the Camberley News Paper. They
have photographers to help with players profiles and "spin" the foreign
signings. We have a guy on the local radio (the Eagle- serves right out
to London) who is keen to do some coverage for us. The son of the
(Steve Gotting) bloke that I work with plays for WASPS (who are the
current European and English Champions). Ben Gotting started his rugby
career here and we can get some mileage and help from him and his mates
at WASPS.
If any of you know of any Zimbabweans or South Africans who would be
interested in getting involved in a bit of Rugby, meeting and
socializing with the same lifestyle folk and making the most out of
their new start in England, please send me their email and contact
details. Please forward this email on to any and all rugby
playing Zimbos in England in particular, Justin Buchanan and his group
of friends.
Onward and Upwards Always.

On Sunday my 6 year old Grand-Daughter's 4 month old Miniature Jack
Russell puppy found the rat poison I had put out in my workshop. The
consequences are obvious - little Patches was dead in 30 minutes. This
has had a devastating effect not only on the whole family but
especially on Kyra, who's best friend and companion was Patches.
My plea here is to put the word out for a replacement "Patches" Can
anyone assist?
If you can or know someone who has or will soon have such type puppies
please let me know.
You can contact me on Cell 011 402 674, Home (09) 242229, and Business

Christmas Greetings:-
Subject: Night Before Christmas
Twas the night before Christmas
and all through the town
Not a sign of Baby Jesus
was anywhere to be found.
The people were all busy
with Christmas time chores
Like decorating, and baking,
and shopping in stores.
No one sang "Away in a manger,
no crib for a bed".
Instead, they sang of Santa
dressed-up in bright red.
Mama watched Martha Stewart,
Papa drank beer from a tap.
As hour upon hour
the presents they'd wrap
When what from the T.V.
suddenly caught their ears ?
'Cept an ad.. which told
of a big sale at Sears.
So away to the mall
they all flew like a flash...
Buying things on credit...
and others with cash!
And, as they made their way home
From their trip to the mall,
Did they think about Jesus?
Oh, no... not at all.
Their lives were so busy
with their Christmas time things
No time to remember
Christ Jesus, the King.
There were presents to wrap
and cookies to bake.
How could they stop and remember
who died for their sake?
To pray to the Savior...
they had no time to stop.
Because they needed more time
to "Shop til they dropped!"
On Wal-mart! On K-mart!
On Target! On Penney's!
On Hallmark! On Zales!
A quick lunch at Denny's
From the big stores downtown
to the stores at the mall
They would dash away, dash away,
and visit them all!
And up on the roof,
there arose such a clatter
As grandpa hung icicle lights
up on his brand new step ladder.
He hung lights that would flash.
He hung lights that would twirl.
Yet, he never once prayed to Jesus...
Light of the World.
Christ's eyes... how they twinkle!
Christ's Spirit... how merry!
Christ's love... how enormous!
All our burdens... He'll carry!
So instead of being busy,
overworked, and uptight
Let's put Christ back in
Christmas and enjoy
some good nights!
Merry Christmas!
