Once again Masvingo is coming up with an hilarious farce to be
presented at the Bulawayo Theatre on October 1 and 2. This is the
fourth year in succession that Masvingo Drama Circle is traveling a
comedy to Bulawayo and during this period, have built up an enviable
reputation for quality productions. Last year the two performances
were booked out before the Masvingo company arrived in the city. Once
again the director of the play is Doug Hill.
This time the play is by Michael Cooney, son of the noted Ray Cooney
who has been writing sell-out farces for the past forty years. Michael
follows in his father's footsteps and Cash on Delivery, the latest
offering, is as funny as any of Ray Cooney's plays.
The story revolves around Eric Swan, who, for years, has been
defrauding the Social Security authority by claiming cash allowances
for numerous fictitious lodgers, ailing family members and a variety of
other fictitious characters.
An inspector from the Department calls to investigate one claim,
followed by his superior, the domineering Ms Cowper, and the fun
starts. With the help of his friend Norman, Eric starts inventing
other characters, there are numerous name changes, the inspector is
sent onto the roof to locate an offending party, an undertaker arrives
to remove a supposedly dead body; Eric struggles to prevent the 'body'
from being taken away for cremation, lightning strikes and destroys all
the Department's evidence and finally, after all the chaos and
confusion, Ms Cowper finds an amusing and inventive method way of
resolving everything as the play ends.
The play moves at a frenetic pace and should have audiences in gales of
laughter throughout. The play is suitable for all ages.
The leading roles are played by Anthony Lubbe, Micah Zinduru, Graeme
Nish, Anna Marie Matthews and Moira Rice, all of whom are well-known to
audiences both in Bulawayo.

TELEPHONE ACCOUNTS
To those of you who are responsible for the payment of Tel-One
telephone
accounts, (which have started arriving today) please seriously consider
writing to the General Manager of Tel-One within the next few days to
COMPLAIN IN THE VERY STRONGEST TERMS against the unfair, unjustified
and
exorbitant telephone rates increases which have come into effect.
What we need is a massive and strong protest against the unjustified
and
astronomical telephone charge increases introduced by Tel-One. The
unit
charges have been increased overnight from $120 to $585, a five-fold
increase.
This is justified by neither the current rate of inflation nor an
improvement in the quality of service provided.
By comparison, fixed land-line operators overseas have cut their rates
by
an
average of 50% over the last couple of years. It would appear therefore
that
these increases are the result of either pure greed or incompetence.
It is likely that several businesses will not be able to sustain such
unrealistic increases and will have to close down. At a time when the
Governor of the Reserve Bank is trying, quite successfully, to control
inflation in Zimbabwe, the latest measure is tantamount to economic
sabotage.
These telephone charge increases will doubtlessly have a 'domino'
effect
on
all businesses, like fuel price increases do, and you can expect other
charges/fees/rates and subscriptions to increase in order to off-set
these!
Let's try to be united in protest against these increases.

Thank you to all those people who contact me, wanting to know the truth
behind rumours. Hopefully we are making the rumours calm down a bit,
but we also know they will never stop, unless all of us pull together
and not listen to rubbish that comes out of some peoples mouths, and
use our own integrity to find the truth from the "horse's mouth" so to
speak.
Attempted hijackings are starting up again, so if you are a victim of
this, please do contact me so that I can keep the statistics and keep
tabs on a pattern forming. Remember not to panic if you feel you are
being followed, drive directly to your police station, hooting in order
to get the attention of the police inside who will come to your
assistance.
I have a few victims who have been harassed on Fife Street between
12th and 9th Avenues by gangs ranging from 4 to 7 young men. They bang
on the car distracting the person inside, slashing tyres and trying to
open the car doors or putting their hands through the windows. Be very
alert in this area and drive off if they say your tyre is flat (the
chances that it is flat is quite high, considering they have most
probably already slashed it). So what, just drive to a safe area to
get it changed, preferably at a reputable garage.
This week I would like to state to people, please do not give out too
much information about yourself to anyone that you do not know or in a
public area, there are far too many "ears" around and they are very
quick to act on information given out freely. The criminals just have
to follow you from these areas and find out your address. This
includes the following:
- Talking to friends in supermarkets, coffee houses
or restaurants, stating how much you may have sold a house, or car or
any dealings with money.
- Do not write a cheque out in full view of the person in front and
behind you showing your physical address and signature, which is
usually done at tills in supermarkets. Write your address and info on
the back of the cheque before hand.
- Giving out your physical address to someone looking for work, or
trying to sell you that lovely sculpture.
- Documents in handbags, briefcases that state your physical address,
phone numbers and every bank card information that you really don't
need to carry around with you.
- Do not put your home telephone number on your cell under the word
"home" this gives the criminals a chance to phone that number if they
have stolen your cell to contact not only you but your domestic if
he/she answers the phone.
- Do not let strangers know that you are a single woman with/without
children in a house or flat - this usually comes up in neighbourhood
meetings, and you do not know who is in that room that could harass
you.
- Same goes with people stating they run a business from their homes
- refer to above!
- Careful what you say in front of your domestics - they may seem
part of the family, but remember, if they are intimidated they will
look after themselves first this is normal human behaviour.
- Do not write addresses down on sponsor sheets.

hijacked or been involved in a house robbery (meaning guns held to
their heads), please do not hesitate to contact me, as meetings are on
the 3rd Tuesday of every month from 13:30 Hours. Venue will be given
out to you when you contact me.

Thornhill's home and, possibly, a car for theirs). Her home is a farm
in the heart of the Franschhoek wine valley. I'm attaching a photo

The location is near pineforests just like the Scottish highlands (but
with sun!!) and they have baboons and wild boar amongst other animals.
