Last time I gave a few pointers on Keeping you safe in your home,
today, I would like to continue with the rest of the points.
KEEPING YOU SAFE IN YOUR HOME (PART 2)
- Outside lights are a deterrent to burglars, install as many as you
can afford.
- Dogs should sleep INSIDE the house. They are there to warn you,
not save you, if outside they may well be poisoned and not be able to
warn you.
Do not allow domestics or guards to have keys to the house.
Before opening the back door in the mornings, check that no one is
lurking around outside, several robberies have happened at 0600hrs.
If going out for the evening, leave inside lights on and a radio or
the TV.
If you have an electric fence, switch it ON when you got to work,
not off!!!
Do not keep large amounts of money or any other valuables in home
safes, it's the first thing the intruders ask for. They are also
looking for cellphones and jewelry.
If you normally get home at lunchtime, try and vary the time
occasionally.
If your dogs don't come and greet you on your return, be
suspicious.
Install a metal grille across your verandah doors if you want to
keep the doors open whilst you are sitting inside.
If you have a remote for your alarm system, hang it around your
neck whilst you are home during the day, you may need assistance in a
hurry.
Don't employ casual workers or any others for that matter before
checking them out with the police. Word of mouth recommendations are
usually safer.
Lock your cars at night even if they are in a locked garage.
Above all, if your suspect that there are intruders in your home at
night, DO NOT GO AND INVESTIGATE. Try and get the family into one
bedroom, lock yourselves in and use the phones to ring for help. If
this fails, CO-OPERATE with the intruders, resisting or trying to fight
back may endanger your life and that of your family.
Most of these tips are recommended by Southern African law enforcement
agencies and crime prevention organisations in South Africa and
Zimbabwe. They are not to be reproduced from email without prior
arrangement with the Anti Hijack Trust Zimbabwe.
I also have a wish list below, as I know this goes out to a number of
companies. The Trust is sponsored by the Private Sector, and I am
sorry to say, that the Bulawayo Private Sector has hardly come forward
to help the Trust in Bulawayo. So now it is up to you to help us in
Bulawayo to keep this worthy organisation going, as over 100 families
have benefited with care-giving and numerous members of public have
been made very aware of the situation in Bulawayo regarding hijackings
and house break-ins. Please help us out.
My wish list is simple. I need someone to sponsor
1. the landline - usually up to $ 250 000-00 a month (before the
new increase).
2. The cell phone - usually $ 60 000-00 a month.
3. Re-inking of computer ribbon for the office.
4. Donation of a new computer - my one is nearly finished with the
screen playing up a great deal, and more capacity to do a database for
Bulawayo and outlying areas.
The next support group meeting for victims of hijacking and house
break-ins is on the 17th August 2004. Please contact me for more
details - we would love to see you there and give you the lift that you
need.
My contact details are: cell 011-701 323 or email: crime@mweb.co.zw
A friend of my mom sent her a letter from UK telling her that she had
joined a class called "silver surfers". The aged folks who now use
the e-mail to reach their kids around the world. They are being taught
the basics of how to sent and receive messages. We wondered if anyone
out there would be keen to train our old folks on this type of thing as
Im sure there are many who would love to learn, but no one to teach
them.

Zim pensioners
The Zimbabwe Pensioners' Association has been formed under the auspices
of the Flame Lily Foundation of South Africa. We are at present
compiling a database of Zimbabwe pensioners, both in order to attempt
to alleviate the plights of those whose pensions have become worthless
and are without alternative means of support, and to bring pressure on
the Zimbabwe government to honour its pension obligations abroad.
Many Zimbabwe pensioners, or their widows, reside in South Africa and
most are in straitened circumstances. All made appropriate pension
contributions during their working lives.
They have been the casualty of hyper-inflation, a collapsed exchange
rate, the drying up of foreign exchange and the loss of control of
government finances.
Non-government pension funds have become worthless and, even if
significant pensions were payable, transfer has been blocked by the
Zimbabwe Reserve Bank on the grounds of non-availability of foreign
exchange.
Government pension payments to South Africa have been honoured on a
hit-and-miss basis in recent years but dried up completely in March
2003.
Your assistance would be appreciated in reaching Zimbabwe or Rhodesian
pensioners and annuitants, widows and others interested. They should
write to the ZPA, P. O. Box 1884, Pinetown 3600, providing the
following information: their full name, postal address, telephone
number, e-mail address if available, pension fund, pension number, date
of last payment received and last amount received (Zimbabwe dollars).
If the Zimbabwean pensioner is critically in need of assistance, this
should also be stated.

PIANO QUEST
I am looking for some help with a valuation and history on a piano I
have which is a GULBRANSEN PIANO-ROLLER made in 1928 in Chicago
especially for DARTER & SONS in CAPE TOWN. The serial number is
282849. This piano played in the old VAUDEVILLE cinema in Umtali (now
Mutare) when the first silent movies came out. It was obtained by the
OLIVIER family when the Vaudeville closed down. It does not have the
insides with it but is still playable although it is in need of a
tuning and a bit of TLC.
I am Maggie Clarke (nee Olivier) and you are
able to contact me with any information on 241300 in the evenings or
email nooinkie@ecoweb.co.zw Thank you and I hope there is someone out
there that can help with some history.
