Cod Liver Oil Memories

When I look at the plethora of drugs and remedies in the pharmacies these days I am always aghast. Thirty types of pain relievers, twenty stomach preparations, remedies for men, remedies for ladies, remedies for kids. Thirty different types of sleep aids, thirty different toothpastes. Hundreds of vitamins from A to Z!!
What happened to good old Disprin
As kids we were given a disprin for whatever ache or pain we had. Disprin for headaches, disprin for any aches, muscle strain or cuts and bruises after playtime. Disprin even for toothache, or a whole clove sucked over the tooth!!

For tummy troubles it was Milk of Magnesia, Epsom Salts or Enos 'When you're feeling low - Eno' remember the jingle Toothpaste was Colgate or the folk who could not afford Colgate used a stick from a plant Miswac.

Coughs were treated by extracting juice from Aloes, rather like Tequila, which might be the very reason for it all!
Sore throats were treated by gargling with salt water.

Our sole vitamin supplement was Cod Liver Oil and Malt, I still gag at the very thought!! Oranges and lemons were our source of vitamin C.

Teabags or cucumbers were used for puffy eyes, prunes for constipation, aloe vera for sunburn, plus Honey for everything else, and of course chicken soup for the soul!!

It is with regret that we announce the passing of Stuart Donald Simpson (1965 - 2022), son of Lorraine (d) and Ken Simpson (d) of Bradfield.

Stuart passed away in the UK after a relatively short illness. He leaves a brother and a son.

DR ALEX MAGAISA

He was former adviser to the late Prime Minister of Zimbabwe in the inclusive government Morgan Tsvangirai.
A message posted on Facebook read, 'He suffered a cardiac arrest this morning at Margate Hospital at 10 am.'

Meanwhile, Citizens Coalition for Change president Nelson Chamisa has this to say:
'A huge blow fellow citizens!
What a force, a giant!
What a human being!
What an intelligent man!
What gigabytes of intellect!
What a fine great man!
What a sober mind!
'What a cool character!
What a lovely brother!
And he has not seen his heart's desire-A New Great Zimbabwe.'

Magaisa was a constitutional law expert as well as law lecturer at the University of Kent Law School in England.
Between 2012 and 2013, Magaisa was chief of staff and principal advisor to Tsvangirai, then Zimbabwe's prime minister in a coalition government and leader of the Movement for Democratic Change, the country's main opposition party.
In 2011-2012, Dr. Magaisa served as a key advisor to COPAC, the parliamentary committee that wrote Zimbabwe's new Constitution, which was approved at a referendum and signed into law in 2013.
He was the author of a widely acclaimed blog Big Saturday Read offering in-depth analyses of law and politics in Zimbabwe.
During his fellowship, Dr. Magaisa wrote a handbook on citizens' fundamental rights and freedoms under the new constitution, a project aimed at enhancing a culture of constitutionalism and democratic citizenship in Zimbabwe.

RIP MRS LIZ DARE

Those of us who swam at the time probably never knew just how committed Mrs Dare was but as we grew up we began to realise and appreciate just how much of a contribution she made to the swimming fraternity!

Proudly wearing her green blazer laden with memorabilia she would pace the poolside. She wasn't liked much for that red flag which hung from her pocket, she never liked it either, but if you followed the rules that's where it remained. I'm sure she has seen generations pass through the waters of Borrow Street pool which it is still fondly known as and I'm sure Nationals were a time of great joy for her as she watched the Crusaders swimmers soar! She was always cheering for them from the sidelines and corrections came through in our evening training sessions. So many amazing memories you were a part of and so we thank you for your committment and contribution through-out our young lives! Thoughts are with Murray Dare and all other family during this sad time.
