NOEL ERIC YORK - BOET - MBOKODO
Some folk have called Boetie 'a Legend', many wonderful things have been said about this man over the past few days since his untimely death on Sunday.
I call him 'A Giant' not only in stature but in his manner, his life, his ethos.
Stricken with the most vile of cancers, Boetie fought like very few have fought this scourge, refusing to give in to its malignancy as there was always 'something to be done'.
Hailing from the vast Rosenfels/York dynasty in Matabeleland, life has been a series of skirmishes, confrontations, indeed full-on battles for its very existence.
But its reward has been a tight knit clan of decent, hard working folk who live life to the fullest and pay their way proudly in the community. He leaves a legacy to be proud of.
Yes, Boetie York will indeed be a legend, his strength of character, fortitude and fierce love for all those around him, will pave the way for countless Zimbabwe families, hopefully for many fine centuries in this country.

Farewell to the Head of the Herd
RIP Boetie York MBOKODO
You were so many things to so many people. And although you didn't have to be part of my life anymore you were still there.
Grandfather to Jessie and Evan but Father and mentor to me. You accepted my choice to leave and supported my decision, you even accepted and loved Ged as one of your own.
We will miss your 5am Sunday morning visits and banter.
Your stern advice and unwavering support.
We sat on your bed and you still knew our names, your mind was there but your body gave up. I always imagined you'd leave in blaze of glory just how you lived your life, I never wanted you to suffer a long painful dreaded disease.
Many say, "He was such a tough hard man...." OH yes he was..... Because he had to be.
His duties never ended in war, he was head of a big strong family and had to look after everyone and their families and everyone that came with them.
You helped so many people in so many ways, your legacy and empire will remain part of this place forever.
The lessons you taught me will stay with me forever, my favorite quote from you will always be "my girl, the harder I work, the luckier I get... funny hey"
I wish my children to inherit your grit and determination.
And I wish for you to now finally get some rest Mbokodo. Hamba Kahle Kulu.
Till we meet again Janine
HAMBA KAHLE MBOGOTO
It seems an age since we were devastated by the news that the indestructible Noel York had a cancer that no one has survived. Perhaps his unbelievable energy and determination to beat the cursed disease that should serve as the example of his massive mental strength, determination and achievement which so many have written about this week. It's all true. Boet was a tough 'cookie', both physically and mentally, principled and uncompromising , yet generous in support for those around him. He did not suffer fools gladly.
We were close friends for 50 years where we revelled in the exuberance of youth, as the well known 'district boys' Matabeleland, played sport, and dreamed of the future. During this time we built businesses, started families, fought a war. Boetie excelled in all aspects and emerged a true leader.
Understandably, we saw less of each other in later years, but that changed when he became ill and he visited several times and phoned regularly. We never talked business, money or issues that had affected our lives. We laughed and recalled our earlier years, camping out, buying cattle in remote areas, fishing trips and some eventful escapades when the district boys came to town. The massive achievements of a lifetime did not seem important in these last months. Besides our families, not much else mattered.
I will remember Boet this way and I'm sure when we meet again we will be sitting in a sand riverbed, around a fire, dreaming away.
Our love and condolences to Stella, Eve, Barry, Alan and Sharon
& families.
The Joubert Family.
EVELYN (BUBBLES) STOCK 3 May 1932 - 22 May 2022
In life I loved you dearly, In death, I love you still
In My heart you hold a place, No one else will ever fill,
I cried endlessly today but I promise,
I won't let the tears mar the smiles
that you've given me when you were alive.
I know you are listening from above.
Mom, you were an angel here on earth,
I learned so very much from you.
You were so gentle and so kind; your
A smile would always see me through.
You taught me how to love unconditionally
And how to be my very best in all I do.
You gave your all to your family,
Never once stopping to think about you.
You were more than a mother. You were my
Best friend and a great listener, too.
Oh, how I miss our special talks and
All the fun things we used to do.
Mom, I can never say goodbye to you,
Because I could never bear the pain.
Instead, I say I love you, Mom;
Until we meet again.

THURSDAY 26 MAY AT 6.30 P.M. ALIEN 3
Alien 3, released on 22 May 1992, follows directly on from Aliens. After escaping from the colony Hadley's Hope, Ellen Ripley's ship crashes into a prison planet. Ripley soon realises her ship crashed because of the alien stowaway on-board. As the alien matures and begins to kill off the planet's inhabitants, Ripley is unaware that her true enemy is more than just the killer alien...
- Bold and haunting..[Rolling Stone]
- Probably the most misunderstood of any of the 'Alien' movies, David Fincher's gritty contribution to the franchise is a thrill to watch. You should seek it out. [Insider]
- It's visually breath-taking, and Fincher infuses the material with a genuine sense of dread. [The Spool]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Film members]
FRIDAY 27 MAY AT 6.30 P.M. SWEENEY TODD, THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, directed by Tim Burton, is an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's award-winning 1979 musical which tells the melodramatic Victorian tale of Sweeney Todd (Johnny Depp) who is determined to get his revenge on evil Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman) who had him transported to Australia for a crime he did not commit. Returning after 15 years, he applies his razor to unlucky customers and shuttles the bodies down to Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter) who uses them in her meat-pie shop.
Having been struck by the cinematic qualities of Sondheim's musical while still a student, Burton had entertained the notion of a film version since the early 1980s. Sondheim, although not directly involved, was extensively consulted during production. Depp, not known for his singing, took lessons in preparation for his role, which producer Richard D. Zanuck acknowledged was something of a gamble, but one that paid off handsomely.
- It is distinguished, hypnotic, brilliantly executed and positively electrifying. [Observer]
- A symphony of blood, bravura, butchery, barbarity and beauty, this film could quite possibly be the musical event of the year. [MovieFreak.com]
- Sweeney Todd is often considered Stephen Sondheim's masterpiece; it's too early to say, but it may be Tim Burton's as well. [Cinema Blend]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Red Carpet members]
N.B. WEDNESDAY 1 JUNE AT 6.30 P.M. MANON - BALLET
In decadent 18th century Paris, the young, beautiful and naive Manon is torn between a life of privilege and luxury with the wealthy Monsieur GM or love with the poor student Des Grieux.
Manon has become one the Royal Ballet's signature works since its creation by choreographer Kenneth MacMillan in 1974. This typically sumptuous production is designed by Nicholas Georgiadis and stars Tamara Rojo in the title role with Carlos Acosta as Des Grieux.
- From giddiness to despair, triumph to regret, this Manon is searingly powerful. [The Guardian]
- A dramatic, thrilling, affecting show that's highly recommended if you love ballet - and at least as much so if not. [Daily Telegraph]
- It has to be the most demanding choreography ever, for the leading dancers. Tamara Rojo and Carlos Acosta completely immersed themselves in their characters... absolutely breathtaking [Amazon]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Red Carpet members]
THURSDAY 2 JUNE AT 6.30 P.M. SEABISCUIT
Seabiscuit was a small horse with a lazy side. Sleeping and eating were his favourite occupations early in life, and he wasn't particularly well-behaved. That was before he met three men who would shape him into the best-loved sports legend of the 1930s: the owner Charles Howard (Jeff Bridges), a businessman coping with the tragic death of his son who had a knack for spotting potential in outcasts, the trainer Tom Smith (Chris Cooper), who was called a screwball for thinking he could heal horses other trainers would have shot, and the jockey with a history of brutal injuries, Red Pollard (Tobey Maguire), who started out as an exercise boy and stable cleaner because in the Depression he would settle for anything. 'Seabiscuit' tells the stories of these three men and the horse against the backdrop of the times, the depression that brought America to its knees.
- A life-affirming, epic treatment of a spirit-lifting figure in sports history. [Rotten Tomatoes]
- This is a movie that gets it all right. [New York Post]
- If you don't go away entertained, informed and sated with satisfaction, you need to have your pulse checked to see if you still have one. [Observer]
- Sleek, beautiful and packed with emotion. [Chicago Tribune]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Film members]
THURSDAY 9 JUNE AT 6.30 P.M. HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE
Harry Potter needs no introduction but it's 25 years since the first book in the sequence was published - on 26 June 1997 to be precise. In the opening instalment Harry, a seemingly ordinary eleven-year-old boy serving as a virtual slave for his aunt and uncle, learns that he is actually a wizard and has been invited to attend the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. He's snatched away from his mundane existence but soon finds that the wizarding world is far more dangerous for him than he would have imagined as he quickly learns that not all wizards are ones to be trusted..
- Two and a half hours of pure, uninterrupted enchantment. [Observer]
