The Privy Council

It would appear that Australians and Americans have different posteriors to we Zimbabweans.....

Now this is rather a delicate topic ....... but for years now, going way back to the sixties, we folk in Zimbabwe, upon visiting our "comfort stations" have been exposed to an unusual type of loo paper......

It all began in the days of sanctions before the dreaded UDI days.

Before that our rear ends were pampered and spoilt, just like every one else's the world over. But when sanctions came, we were a resilient bunch and our manufacturers very wisely began to "save paper" They began to use recycled paper ( ) waste paper ( ) heaven forbid !!!

Bright pink, blue and green toilet tissue of dubious quality replaced the soft silky loo paper of the past and we, in our patriotic fervour, naturally accepted this assault on our buttocks.

After all it has saved the country countless millions in forex thus allowing us to spend our booty on more important imported items.

And think of how many trees we have saved, I mean after all, what did one use for this most necessary application before the invention of toilet tissue

Trees are important, foreign currency is important, but hang on, how much longer are we going to have to subject our derrieres to this peculiar sort of torture.

Apart from the fact that this abrasive item clogs the loos, it also dyes our unmentionables a strange colour !! How I love to visit more affluent countries where the loo paper is downy soft, printed with delicate dolphins or roses and you don't need twenty yards of the stuff with which to do the necessary !!

It was the visiting offspring who brought it to my attention, I mean after all one gets used to wartime spartan living doesn't one

A deputation of little girls, visitors from far off climes, approached mother with fists full of US and Aussie dollars and suggested that they would be in charge of the loo tissue purchasing in the future, for at least the duration of their visit !!

They told me in no uncertain terms that their sweet little pink callipygian cheeks had become used to being pandered to, and that no more were they going to subject their Australian and American butts to this peculiar brand of Zimbabwe torture...

And so we sallied forth to the store with the imported goods, the store where one needs one's BIG cheque book, and there it was. The quilted quality loo paper that thrifty, miserly Mum had always refused to put in her shopping trolly.

Four times the cost of the local loo rolls, it screamed at me from the bottom (No pun intended) of the trolly, I had to rip the price tag off the minute we got home in the fear that anyone would see just how much we were spending on the stuff.

But the girls were happy thank goodness. They told me in no uncertain terms that their sweet little cheeks had become used to being pandered to, and that their suitcases would, in future, contain only soft luxurious loo rolls when they next come home for the holidays !!

Come on Zimbabwe tissue pundits, why not let us be privy to your secrets, let us into your closet, why be the butt of our jokes, get with it and give us a break !!

BARBARA VILJOEN

It is with much sadness we announce the passing my of mom Barbara Viljoen. She was 87, and was a force to be reckoned with, working hard her whole life. She had a daycare with my brothers were small, did catering, had cows, selling the milk and bred pigs, nagging the manager of Colcom into slaughtering and dressing them for her.
She bought a band saw and would cut them up herself on the back of the pick up truck per customers specifications. They had 4 trading stores in the rural areas until they lost everything in two stores during the war. She then went to work at Milton School as a Cook Matron with her sister Cucks.

She started her own successful business, Plant Decor Services in her early 50's and in later years was renowned for her jams and chutneys that she sold. Visitors always left the house with several bottles in their hands. Mom was involved in the Cake Icing Guild, Aloe and Succulent Society, and the Orchid Society, being a founding member of some of them. She made thousands of cakes over the years, for family and friends and clients . We often heard the mixer starting in the dark early morning hours because Mom couldn't sleep so would start baking. An avid gardener her favourite spot was sitting on her verandah overlooking the garden. She loved crosswords but couldn't spell very well, a Rosenfels family curse, and often would get to the end with a couple of words left, and when checking we would discover a spelling error that she had managed to work into the puzzle.

Under her abrasive exterior Mom had a big heart and took many friends under her wing, taking care of their kids, fostering another child, rescuing another friend when she discovered her husband beat her, taking her into our home for a while. In her 80's Mom was donating jams etc to the various homes around Bulawayo and knitted hundreds of squares for blankets for the old people. I used to tell her, Mom you are an old people', but she never saw it. She cheated death on many occasion. She never had a surgery that didn't go septic, even having her ears pierced by the doctor because she was scared and they went septic too. I flew home for heart failure when she wasn't expected to last the weekend. A brain aneurysm that she had for two years, flying down to Joburg for surgery and discovering in the preop scan that it had unraveled. Two years ago undergoing her hernia op and nearly dying. I used to tell her that whenever she was close, God would look down and say 'not yet, I still want my peace and quiet' and she would laugh and reply, too true my Moi.
Mom you touched a lot of lives, mostly unseen by others. This is a new journey for you, with Dad, Mark Charmaine and your siblings who have been in your thoughts so much these past weeks. I would say May you Rest In Peace, but I don't think you know how.
Love and miss you.

Moira, Beverly, Grace and David.

ZIMBABWE ACADEMY OF MUSIC & PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO

Tel: 2260684 / 2267195 E-mail: mailto:zam@gatorzw.co.uk

The Academy office is closed for Easter and Trade Fair weeks and re-opens on Tuesday 3 May.

THURSDAYS 5, 12 & 19 MAY AT 6.30 P.M. LINE OF DUTY: SERIES 5
An organised crime group (OCG) hijacks a police convoy transporting seized drugs and kills three armed officers. The ambush draws the attention of AC-12, who investigate whether or not someone leaked information of the police convoy to the OCG which in turn leads them to Operation Pear Tree, a highly classified undercover operation which is itself set up to expose links between organised criminality and the police service.
- With epic interrogation scenes, surprise betrayals, grisly murders, untold secrets, massive twists... well, it's just good to be back. [Radio Times]
- It's absolutely a must watch. It really builds up incrementally. Blinding, I loved it. [BBC.com]
- Season five has been a joyous ride and held the audience captive for the past six weeks. [Daily Express]
Admission: US$2.00 ($5.00 the series) [free to Film Members]

FRIDAY 6 MAY AT 6.30 P.M. LA BAYADERE - BALLET
An iconic 19th-century Russian ballet, La Bayadere was originally performed in St Petersburg in 1877, and has remained in the Russian repertoire ever since. It remained unknown in the West until the Kirov Ballet toured with the Kingdom of the Shades scene in 1961. Natalia Makarova saw La Bayadere as a child in Leningrad, creating this version of Petipa's ballet in 1980, and it was first performed by The Royal Ballet in 1989. As well as the famous Kingdom of the Shades, it contains roles of very different styles for two ballerinas in Nikiya and Gamzatti, a spectacular virtuoso solo for the Bronze Idol, a stunning pas de deux for Solor with both Nikiya and Gamzatti and much more. In this Royal Ballet production, Nikiya is danced by Altynai Asylmuratova, Gamzatti by Darcey Bussell, Solor by Irek Mukhamedov and the Bronze Idol by Tetsuya Kumakawa.
- The dancing of the principal soloists is quite simply superb. [Musicweb International]
- This is a ballet that truly has something for everyone: a sumptuously melodic score by Minkus, a plot as thumpingly dramatic as any old-time children's Saturday movie matinee or silent-screen film, with class and a redeeming whiff of ballet history. It also has exciting lead roles for four dancers. And the performers here are international stars. [New York Times]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Red Carpet Members]
