The Garden Grapevine

Do you remember those glorious days when the Bulawayo Chronicle was delivered to the house at 6am daily HeeHooMustBeObeyed would sit at the breakfast table and peruse that glorious rag from front to back covers.

Martin Lee would write his column, was it called 'Cabbages and Kings' Michael Bullivant would critique the Bulawayo Theatre shows with his glorious and prodigious use of the English Language. Sandy Robertson, Ross Fairbairn and Geoffrey Nyarota were Editors at different times, that awe inspiring man the late Donald Henderson was a Sub Editor as was Ian Watson. Alistair Symes and Kevin Ricketts were news reporters while Herb Martin, Dave Chalmers, Glen Byrom and Hugh Eley were superb sportswriters. Hewitt Armstrong was managerial and the General Manager's secretary was an extraordinary lady Gladys Dinkie Wilson Chikwehwa always ready to lend a hand.

Of course I am only naming very few of the fabulous men and women who published the Bulawayo Chronicle over many years through thick and thin. The Chronicle is one of the oldest newspapers in Africa and was founded by the Argus Company of South Africa on 12 October 1894. One used to be able to visit the Chronicle Archives and photocopy articles and photos, I wonder if that facility still exists. It was a popular occupation to obtain a photocopy of the newspaper of the date upon which one was born, as a birthday gift....

However no need for a newspaper to be delivered to our house any more, the Garden Grapevine knows it all.

Our beloved gardener spends and inordinate amount of time keeping our verge pristine and consequently know every single thing that happens in Suburbs. Who died, who gave birth, who got robbed, what 'so and so' had for breakfast even!!

Jacaranda season is the most fun in the neighbourhood. Everyone is out on the verge sweeping up the fragrant purple Jacaranda petals, followed by Autumn when the tiny Jacaranda leaves drop in profusion. News spreads like wildfire then, and nothing of consequence is excluded from the loquacious Garden Grapevine.

THURSDAY 3 FEBRUARY AT 6.30 P.M. LINE OF DUTY: SERIES 4 - final episodes
In the final episodes of the current series of Line of Duty, DCI Roz Huntley struggles to allay her husband's suspicions whilst AC-12 find a new angle to pursue their case against her.
- The finale was phenomenally exciting. [Daily Mail]
- 'Line of Duty' came to a nail-bitingly exciting end, or rather to three nail-bitingly exciting ends, two of them unforeseeable by even the most imaginative of viewers. [Irish Independent]
Admission: US$2.00 - or $5.00 the series [free to Film Members]

FRIDAY 4 FEBRUARY AT 6.30 P.M. SAINT-SAENS: SAMSON ET DALILA
Postponed from the end of last year when it was intended to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the death of Saint-Saens, Samson et Dalila has all the ingredients for popular success. The subject, based on Chapter 16 of the Book of Judges, is well known and lends itself to spectacular presentation, not least in the final scene as the blinded Samson summons his strength to bring down the pillars of the temple. (As the old joke has it, it's the one opera guaranteed to bring the house down..) The title roles are equally rewarding, matching the voluptuous lines of Dalila's music with an essentially heroic tenor part for Samson. In this Royal Opera production, the roles have outstanding interpreters in Shirley Verrett and Jon Vickers. The designs are by the distinguished Australian artist, Sidney Nolan, and the conductor .Sir Colin Davis.
- A triumph on every level. Get this "Samson" and forget all others. Shirley Verrett's teaming with Vickers is the stuff of which legends are made. If I could give it six stars, I would. [Amazon]
- This is an amazing performance of an amazing opera by amazing performers. [Desert Cart]

THURSDAY 10 FEBRUARY AT 6.30 P.M. CABARET
Cabaret was released fifty years ago on 13 February 1972. It starred Liza Minnelli, giving her her first chance to sing on screen, and she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. With seven other Academy Awards including Best Supporting Actor (Joel Grey), Best Director (Bob Fosse) and Best Original Song Score, it holds the record for most Oscars earned by a film that was not awarded Best Picture.
In Berlin in 1931 American cabaret singer Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) meets British academic Brian Roberts (Michael York), who is finishing his university studies. Despite Brian's confusion over his sexuality, the pair become lovers, but the arrival of the wealthy and decadent playboy Maximilian von Heune (Helmut Griem) complicates matters for them both. This love triangle plays out against the rise of the Nazi party and the collapse of the Weimar Republic.
- Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey are electrifying; director Bob Fosse's choreography and the camera work are scintillating. [Empire Magazine]
- This viscerally powerful, deliriously inspired musical stands the test of time, and then some. [Guardian]]
- Bob Fosse captures the atmosphere incredibly with a multi-layered musical that continues to hold up over the years. [Old School Reviews]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Film Members]

FRIDAY 11 FEBRUARY AT 6.30 P.M. DON QUIXOTE
Don Quixote is one of the great masterpieces of world literature and Marius Petipa turned it into a ballet for the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1871. Mikhail Baryshnikov's sparkling full-length production for the American Ballet Theatre captures all the excitement, Spanish colour, and humour of Cervantes' original masterpiece and is one of the most popular and joyful ballets in the repertoire.
- 'Don Quixote or Kitri's Wedding', Mikhail Baryshnikov's new version of the Russian ballet classic, is a thumping success by every available measure and as an occasion for splendiferous dancing, spectacle, colour and whimsy, it is clearly a winner. [Washington Post]
- The dancers had the audience gasping... [New York Times]
Admission: $2.00 [free to Red Carpet Members]

John Kee-Tui

Beloved husband, father and grandfather. Deepest sympathy to the Kee Tui and extended families.

MARIAN MOLONEY (nee Lantry)
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Marian Moloney, who died peacefully on 2 January in Ireland. Marian is sadly missed by her beloved son Luke, granddaughter Marie, brothers John and Eugene, sisters-in-law, extended family, and many friends.
Ar dheis De go raibh a ainm dilis.
Born at Redbarn, Youghal, Ireland in 1941. Marian grew up in Cork, one of six children, where she was educated by the Ursuline Sisters at St Angela's College. She trained as a nurse at Guy's Hospital in London, and went on to complete further midwifery training in Belfast. In 1969, she travelled to Zambia, where she worked in the mine hospital at Mufulira, and where she met and married her husband Kevin. Marian established a much-needed blood transfusion service in the Midlands in Gwelo in 1975-8, and later worked at the Isolation Hospital in Gwelo, at Que Que Hospital, at the Avenues Clinic in Salisbury, at the Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo, and for the Bulawayo Municipality's District Nursing Service. Following a back injury in the early 1980s, Marian re-trained and worked with Webb Low and Barry from 1984 until around 2002, where she worked tirelessly for others in administering Deceased Estates and caring for and counselling the bereaved. She volunteered her time to help with Island Hospice. Marian was a friend to all, and gave so much of her time and energy to her family and to friends, and to the poor, the sick, and the needy. She was always thinking about and caring for others, Marian was selfless and generous to a fault.
She brought light and comfort to all of us: her family and friends were extraordinarily blessed to have her in their lives. The world is a poorer place without her.
