1) Editorial

It has been a sad week for Bulawayo.

The City is fractured, it's just not like our precious City.

Bulawayo normally pulls together through thick and thin, but this week has seen so much bitterness and distress.

Distress is an understatement, Bulawayo looks after it's own, and when a young mother in our community finds herself in a predicament, we all find ourselves in a predicament.

Social media does not help, and unless one finds oneself living under a rock, every tiny piece of sadness, every tiny piece of hurt, every tiny piece of anguish resonates within the community.

The young people who still remain in Zimbabwe are a special breed, tough, resilient, entrepreneurial, delightful. We need them to maintain standards, we need them to keep us oldies together, we need them to give us grandchildren, and to listen to our stories.

When they get hurt, we get hurt, when they need assistance we provide assistance and we react to protect our offspring.

Sadly, as always happens with social media, words have been distorted, sad things and bad things have been said, the fracture might widen even further, knives have been drawn and people have been hurt. We pray that right will prevail, that souls will be soothed, that wrongs will be righted. Our Community needs to stay together in order to go forward in strength.

'Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.'

THURSDAY 20 MAY AT 6.00 P.M. LINE OF DUTY - SERIES 2
'Line of Duty' concludes with the final two episodes, ''Last Words' and 'The Caddy'.
Season 3 will follow in July.
- 'Line of Duty' stands out as original and surprising. Season 2 is, if anything, even more brutal and thrilling. [New York Times]
- Tops the excellent first series, thanks in no small part to spectacular performances from Keeley Hawes and Adrian Dunbar. Great writing and thrilling to watch. [Rotten Tomatoes]
- The return of BBC Two's crime drama Line of Duty did what it intended to do and pinned us to our seats with excitement. Five Stars. [Daily Telegraph]
- Exceptionally brilliant. [The Mail on Sunday]
Admission: US$1.00 [free to Film members]
FRIDAY 21 MAY AT 6.00 P.M. CONCERT: SAINT-SAENS AND MAHLER
Saint-Saens: Piano Concerto No.4 in C minor, Op.44
Mahler Symphony No.10
Camille Saint-Saens died a hundred years ago in December 1921 and his music will be featured in several DVD concerts across the rest of the year. Completed in 1875, the Fourth Piano Concerto is a one-off, a work of remarkable structural unity unparalleled in the context of the nineteenth-century concerto and it also ranks among Saint-Saens's finest and most original works.
Gustav Mahler died 110 years ago on 18 May 1911 and his Tenth Symphony was left unfinished at his death but subsequently prepared for performance and it follows the composer's dictum that a symphony must embrace everything', in this case from anguish to exuberance', from despair to serenity. It was largely composed after Mahler discovered his wife Alma's affair and during the anguish he felt at the betrayal. The finale begins with a long, arching flute solo of ineffable beauty and the final pages open out onto a world of serene resignation and tenderness: 'To live for you! To die for you! Almschi!' Mahler wrote over the last notes, showing his undimmed love for Alma.
- The interpretation by Ciccolini [of the Saint-Saens] is wonderful and makes one wish that more of his recordings might be released on the market. [Amazon]
- Eliahu Inbal does the Tenth proud, a well-considered performance. [Stereophile].
- Really involving performance - you'll definitely shed a tear or two in the last movement. [Classical Net]
Admission: US$1.00 [free to Red Carpet members]
THURSDAY 27 MAY AT 6.00 P.M. WITHOUT A CLUE .
Starring Michael Caine and ben Kingsley, 'Without a Clue' is farcical take on the Sherlock Holmes stories, which proposes that Holmes is as dashing as ever, but with a little secret: Dr.Watson is the brains behind the operation. Watson scripts all of Holmes' solutions, having discovered that while people would believe in Holmes, no one was ready to accept, Dr.Watson, Crime Doctor. When Reginald Kincaid, the actor he has hired to play Holmes becomes insufferable, Watson fires him and tries to go out on his own, but finds that he has done all too good a job building Holmes up in the public's mind, especially when the ill-matched pair find themselves the victims of the villainous Moriarty.
- I can't understand why this never did well upon release as I think it's a marvellous spoof/comedy that is perfectly cast with Caine and Kingsley as Holmes and Watson. [Rotten Tomatoes]
- This movie is an overlooked gem of a comedy! [IMDb]
- This has to be one of the funniest films ever, Kingsley and Caine just gel together wonderfully. It's one of my favourite films, you can't be sad with the world after seeing this. [Amazon]
Admission: US$1.00 [free to Film Members]
FRIDAY 28 MAY AT 6.00 P.M. PUCCINI: LA BOHEME
A classic among the classics, 'La Boheme' is one of the most frequently staged operas in the world. From its very first performance, it spurred powerful emotions and moved viewers to tears. Seen for the first time, it tells the story of innocent love and sadness following the loss of a loved one and the passing of youth. With each revisit, it reveals deep emotional overtones and even Puccini himself was deeply moved when playing the poignant chords accompanying the heroine's death as if he had just lost his own beloved creature.
- Zeffirelli's is an old-fashioned 'Boheme' with the young Mirella Freni, delectable and deeply touching, [BBC Music Magazine, 5 out of 5 stars]
- Over 50 years old, but you're not likely to find a better version than
this: performed brilliantly in the costumes and setting of the period, and such a refreshing change from modern 'directors' opera' where the music and libretto take a back seat to some nonsensical, trendy interpretation.
Puccini's operas are a celebration of love, youth and beauty amid the sorrows and pain of the world, and none more so than this one. Prepare to shed a tear. [Amazon]
- It's a great relief to come across an opera production which is so unashamedly straightforward, and which concentrates on telling the story as simply and affectingly as possible. Karajan had a wonderful feel for this music, and draws superb playing from the La Scala players. The standard of singing is generally very high, with Mirella Freni at her youthful best, and Raimondi a successful and convincing Rodolfo. [MusicWeb International]
Admission: US$1.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

Daphne Branders
Today, a sad day .. The ever smiling, cheerful and appreciative Daphne Branders forever went to sleep at midnight of the 16th-17th May 2021, at the Barbara Burrell Centre, Bulawayo just 230 nights short of her 103rd Birthday. Should you have had the privilege to spend time in the company of effervescent Daphne, then you will surely share our sentiment of loss of her kind & gentle spirit and genuinely loving soul. Thank you to the staff of Barbara Burrell Centre who cared for and loved Daphne as family. 'Forever the teacher now amongst many of your little children I'm sure'
with fondest love,
Mark Antonia Baelyn & Bo.

On behalf of Jack Allard this is to announce, with great sadness, the death of his beloved father, Mick, peacefully in his sleep at Alicelands on the 7th May 2021.

MICHAEL JOHN ALLARD 1950 - 2021

My dad had many incredible and enviable talents.

He will probably be remembered most as an artist, because he painted thousands of amazing paintings and portraits in his lifetime, which hang in private and public collections all over the world.

He was also a brilliant photographer. As a student he won the Michaelis Prize for his photography, and he went on to take tens of thousands of incredible photographs.

He was the drummer for the band, The Short Circuit Guavas, in Bulawayo in the 1960s and then for Louis the Jeep at UCT and in London in the 1970s. We still have his old drum set in his studio and he used to play them from time to time.

He was an amazing carpenter and we have examples of his carpentry all over our home.

As a sportsman he played baseball for Rhodesia in the 1960s and became a pretty handy golfer later in his life.

But most importantly, he had the most amazing personality. He was a great raconteur and could tell jokes like no one else, take off any accent, and he spoke fluent Sindebele from a very young age.
He had an amazing ability to leave a lasting impression on anyone he met, whether it be a joke, story or just his general demeanor, he would always make the most of any situation, whether it be good or bad. Life was larger and more important in his presence. This will be sorely missed by myself, and everyone who had the privilege of meeting him.
He was the most loving and loved father any son could have asked for.

Rest In Peace, Dad.

Appeal from BULAWAYO SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS

When I look into the eyes of an animal,
I do not see an animal
I see a living being,
I see a friend, I feel a soul.
Anthony Douglas Williams

I think many of us feel like that, but perhaps especially during these difficult times when these 'souls' need our collective help more than ever before - included are the animals rescued from abuse and neglect, and cared for at Bulawayo SPCA who are in dire need of our help and support.
Knowing that the lockdown has given folk time to sort out cupboards, garages etc - please have a look at our Charity Shop List and our Kennel Wish List - you may be surprised how many unwanted items to you - are just what we are needing here at the kennels!
Shop
All the volunteers who work at the charity shop deserve a big pat on the back, but they DO need items to sell! - apparently the shelves are rather bare, so they would appreciate any unwanted saleable household goods, such as ornaments, glassware, crockery, pictures, clothing, garden tools, small items of furniture, jam jars for the jam makers! - in fact anything they can sell to make money to help the kennels.
They have Ecocash for convenience - items can be dropped off at the Charity shop - 127e,Robert Mugabe Way.
Kennel and Clinic Wish List
If folk could donate any one of these items, that would be fantastic!
Old blankets and towels, Newspapers,Tinned + Dried Pet Food for Dogs and Cats, Fly Smear, Old Crepe Bandages, Latex Gloves, Face Masks, Paper Towels, Disinfectant Wipes, Antiseptic Wound Spray, Dressings, Toys for Cats, Cat Carriers, Dog Boxes or Cages, Fly Spray, Bolt Cutters, Brooms both Soft and Stiff, Disposable Aprons, off cuts of Foam Rubber to cover donkey harnesses. all can be dropped off at the Kennels, cnr of Magazine and Khami Road - if you can donate just one of these items. it will improve the welfare of at least one animal - Thank You!

Chimanimani (formerly Melsetter) lies in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe. Hidden in this secret paradise lies a spectacular home perched in the foothills of these legendary mountains.

This is truly a home with a difference because it is so vast and so solidly built on three levels, from the beautiful natural stone of the area, in fact it could make a spectacular church!!

An imposing lounge/dining room/ billiard room/kitchen which features a spacious fitted kitchen and a fireplace, encompasses the entire top floor. A master bedroom is on the middle level, that can comfortably hold two king size beds and a lounge suite, plus leaving ample room to 'swing a cat'!! Bathroom en suite.

There are three other substantial bedrooms, (three with fireplaces), two and a half bathrooms all with showers, and a games room with table tennis facilities, plus a double lock up garage.

The garden is beautifully landscaped with Tibuchinas and Proteas, bountiful flowering shrubs, avocado and lemon trees. The property boasts two staff quarters and is fully fenced and gated with magnificent views of the surrounding mountains.
