It was like a walk down Memory Lane!!
Three giant lever arch files filled with 50 years of recipes!!
Never mind the dozens of recipe books on the kitchen shelf...
Catalogued Heck no, just a hotch potch of precious familiar, heart tugging recipes, some torn from magazines, some hand written (they were the most poignant), some neatly typed on yellowing newsprint that we used in seventies and eighties.
'Margaux's Rusks', neatly handwritten in her familiar flamboyant style, my darling Margaux died several years ago and I miss her daily. 'Annette's Pate' hurriedly written and covered in pate drool after many years of happy cooking. Annette Bowes has also passed, but is remembered well in the community every time we need an excellent pate.
'Jenny's Health Loaf' was next, also well worn, contributed by Jenny Woodgush who left Zimbabwe when it was still Rhodesia, but her Health Loaf lingers on.
'Midge's Fudge' legendary in the Turk Mine District, Midge Joubert left the Country several years ago, and now has two grandchildren in KZN!
Jeannie ! Loads of glorious recipes from Jeannie Pritchard, now resident in York, one day I will be able to cook just like Jeannie!!
'Judi Appleby's Baked Fish' has always been a welcome addition to any dinner party, again Judi has left us and is happily living in the UK.
'Laura Hardy's Mayonnaise' still a great favourite made with just oil, eggs, lemon juice and mustard powder! It's the technique that counts!! Laura now lives in France..
'Peter Knott's Bread' and 'Flora's Eley's Strawberry Mousse' are among the few recipes I have from friends still resident in Bulawayo.
Perusing through the three files occupied my entire morning as I searched for recipes with which to impress my friends in Chimanimani over the long weekend. At our first gathering in Chimanimani in the eighties, our guest list totalled 167 people, this weekend it has dwindled considerably to just four couples, all of us now great haired and not quite as agile as we were!!
It was a wonderful, enriching, bittersweet, exercise which I miss while we are away from Bulawayo, when its all too easy and impersonal, to find a recipe by consulting Mrs Google!!

Rossini's music has an irrepressible quality, bubbling up effortlessly throughout this retelling of the story of Cinderella. But this is no glibly resolved fairy-tale. Rossini's creation dispenses with whimsy and magical intervention. Instead we are presented with genuine human predicaments. The wicked stepmother becomes a snobbish bully of a stepfather and the fairy godmother is transformed into the Prince's tutor, intent on finding a girl who may be worthy of his pupil's love. The dark edges of the story are punctuated throughout by tender emotion and sparkling comedy in this fresh and vibrant but timelessly elegant Glyndebourne production from May 2005 by Sir Peter Hall.

The Bavarian State Orchestra conducted by Carlos Kleiber
- Mussorgsky, orch.Ravel: Pictures at an Exhibition
The Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra conducted by Gustavo Dudamel
- Brahms 4th Symphony is unquestionably a major masterpiece, and in Kleiber's hands it receives the closest I know to a definitive interpretation. [Amazon]

The performers are, of course, no strangers to Bulawayo. Lauren Kitkat was one of the Academy's outstanding students (then Lauren Meikle) in the early 2000s and Theo Bross has been a popular visitor in more recent years whilst Jeanette Micklem has been a pillar of Bulawayo concerts for forty years both as soloist and partner.
The programme largely comprises music by Beethoven and was originally intended for 2020, Beethoven's 250th birthday year. It also includes one of Haydn's late piano trios and an 'Allegro' by Nikolai Kapustin, a Russian composer who played with early Soviet jazz bands and in his compositions used a fusion of jazz and classical forms. Mokale Koapeng is a contemporary South African composer and his piece, as the title suggests, is a tribute to Beethoven.
The Rainbow Blaze Marimba Band will be in attendance before the concert so come early to enjoy some rather different music and there will also be a short mbira piece derived from a theme by Beethoven in the programme.

A police convoy escorting a civilian under a witness protection scheme is attacked. Joan Bancroft - One year ago on 25th April. Beloved and dear wife of Tony. Remembered with love by Graham, Angie, Shirley, Tony and her grandchildren Euan, Amelia, Hannah and Ben.
God has her in his arms, we have her in our hearts.
Our much loved friend, Patricia Matheson passed away peacefully in Bishops Stortford, England just a
few weeks before her 92nd birthday. Sister Patricia Matheson was in charge of the Private Ward at UBH, Bulawayo, for several decades. She was generous, had boundless energy and was much loved and respected by her patients, professional colleagues and all who knew her.
Patricia leaves behind her beloved God Children, their families and her many friends. One of her greatest joys was a love of music. As an active member of The Academy of Music she was often to be heard singing in the chorus or in the audience enjoying beautiful music.
Being outgoing she also loved a good party. We think of her doing just that as she is reunited with her dearest late husband, Duncan Matheson.
