FIRST NIGHT HOME!

The view from the plane was exotic, verdant, green, lush, a product of a rainy season beyond all expectations.

I did not know whether to laugh or cry, 12 months away from the land of my birth The longest period I had ever been away from home....

The fact that our return home had been delayed due to aircraft malfunction was irrelevant, after all what is a 24 hour delay in Africa Our dear friend Lyn met us at the airport, we had expected a tussle with the Customs folk but they were absolutely charming and welcomed us with open arms!
The garden was magnificent, the welcome from our staff was tear jerking, and catching up with childhood friends was memorable....

The grocery shops were incredible, a vast array of beautifully fresh veggies, meat, milk, bread, everything including the kitchen sink!!

Being selfish I skirted the areas that would make me sad, that had to be saved for later, the potholes were wearisome but that makes the traffic more diligent which has its good points. I was sad about the rubbish dumping, but with a flash of brilliance, I thought of offering a substantial reward for people to report anyone seen dumping.....wonder what HeeHoo would say to that

Later on I found out the Wifi was working brilliantly, DSTV not so, but I don't get involved with that so left HeeHoo working his usual magic.. and then it was bath time. In Johns Creek we shower only! For a year I had been showering.. except for the occasional stay at a fancy hotel, and so I was anticipating my FIRST BATH, not even anticipating..salivating..girding my loins even... speculating...

After supper, I left HeeHoo tackling DSTV and headed for the bathroom that I personally had designed..full length tinted windows overlooking the beautiful garden..I ran the tap deliciously, deliriously, out gushed a quart of water....and then it stopped!!!!

Hmmm, 'African engineering
' Donning a towel I found a torch and headed for the water tank outside..what was that rustling sound
A born and bred Bush Girl!! Afraid of a rustle
Having Walked with the Lions, counted 600 elephant at close range on numerous Game Counts, followed Black Rhino on foot, I was baulking at a rustle
Too much pampering and mollycoddling in USA suburbia obviously...

Long story short, said tank was empty and pump had burnt out!! So no FIRST BATH tonight......but also no shower either....the water delivery situation in Bulawayo is very 'iffy' to say the least in spite of all the rain!! Looking at the positives, I reflected that many people in the world had never ever enjoyed the luxury of a bath, so stop whining I told myself!!

Ever resilient I turned down the bed and undid the mosquito net sides. Very trendy, I sewed it myself and the effect was pretty much that of an exotic Hwange Lodge. Trouble is, every speck of dust filtering into the house over the past 12 months had garnered on the pristine white mesh, turning it a dusty brown, and resulting in fits of sneezing that had the desired effect of blowing the mozzies away!!

Oh well, at least we still had electricity so all in all, it was a joyous homecoming.

WEDNESDAY 31 MARCH AT 5.30 P.M. BACH: MASS IN B MINOR
Like music lovers the world over, John Nelson believes Bach's Mass in B Minor is a pinnacle of Western music. For years he cherished the dream of performing it in the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris with his Ensemble Orchestral de Paris and in 2006 he achieved his ambition with this performance. The other performers are internationally recognised soloists Ruth Ziesak (soprano), Joyce DiDonato (mezzo), Daniel Taylor (alto), Paul Agnew (tenor) and Dietrich Henschel (baritone) with the Maitrise de Notre-Dame choir. Stage director Olivier Simonnet provided a very talented scenography for the performance: the cathedral not only provides a setting for a concert, it is also an artistic element in the performance.

- This is a phenomenal performance of the Mass. John Nelson was fascinating to watch as a conductor who is heart and soul immersed in this music. The orchestra is superb and the performance is in one of the most wonderful churches in the world which adds enormously to the power of the music. [Amazon]
- Watching this DVD is life-enhancing.' [International Record Review]
- An all-star cast.. virtuoso choral singing.. one of the best ever. [The Philadelphia Inquirer]
- Intensely expressive and meticulously shaped.. will bring a lump to your throat. [Fanfare Magazine]

Admission: US$1.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

THURSDAY 15 APRIL AT N.B. 6.00 P.M. THE EAGLE
In 140 AD, twenty years after the unexplained disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland, young centurion Marcus Aquila (Channing Tatum) arrives from Rome to solve the mystery and restore the reputation of his father, the commander of the Ninth. Accompanied only by his British slave Esca (Jamie Bell), Marcus sets out across Hadrian's Wall into the uncharted highlands of Caledonia..

- 'The Eagle' appeals to my older self while retaining what made my childhood reading so stirring. [Guardian]
- Has all the ingredients of a terrific adventure thriller: an epic quest narrative, strong characters, the tangled interplay of pride, loyalty and masculinity. [Daily Telegraph]
- 'The Eagle' is a rip-snorting adventure tale of the sort made before CGI, 3-D and alphabet soup in general took the fun out of movie-going. [Chicago Sun-Times]

Admission: US$1.00 [free to Film members]

FRIDAY 16 APRIL AT N.B. 6.00 P.M. STRAVINSKY: THE FIREBIRD / PETRUSHKA / THE RITE OF SPRING
Igor Stravinsky died fifty years ago on 6 April 1971 and the event is marked by performances of the three great ballets he wrote for Diaghilev between 1910 and 1913. All three come in revivals of the original choreography, two from the Mariinsky Ballet and one from the Bolshoi.
'The Firebird' is a Russian folk tale which was commissioned from the young Stravinsky by Diaghilev and premiered in June 1910. The ballet was an immediate success and the Ballets Russes enabled the choreographer Michel Fokine to bring to this enterprise the right amount of novelty needed to captivate but not alienate the audience. It was a total success. 'Petrushka' followed a year later with the choreography again by was again by Fokine in 1911 with the great Nijinsky as Petrushka and was another huge success but the premiere of 'The Rite of Spring' on 6 May 1913 with choreography by Nijinsky by contrast caused one of the great scandals of musical history. The audience was shocked by the primitive violence of the ballet and the music. It was so radically rejected that the ballet was taken off after eight performances and it was only a century later that the original choreography was recreated, as seen in this performance.

- Anyone who wants these two ballets on DVD ['Firebird', 'Rite'], need look no further. The dancing is of the standard one expects from the Mariinsky, the productions are a treat for the eye while the sound and the photography are stunning. Five stars plus for me, no doubt about it. [Amazon]
- This is a very special DVD. Valery Gergiev leads his Mariinsky Orchestra in splendid performances of both ballets and both feature brilliant choreography, as well as colourful sets and costuming. [Classical Net]
- 'Petrushka' portrays a busy Shrovetide fair, complete with live Catherine wheels and falling snow towards the end - although it's the vivid kookiness of its central scenes (set inside the puppet's apartments) that make this piece so compelling. [Amazon]
- The dancing is fluid and the plot flows freely[in 'Petrushka'] without the usual over-use of primp and pose choreography that can often become tedious and distracting. The sets and costumes, patterned after the original sketches for their turn-of-the-twentieth-century premieres are stunning, helping to bring you into the fairy tale worlds presented [E-Bay]

Admission: US$1.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

Working for the rights of Zimbabwe Pensioners
ZimPIRT stands for the rights of pensioners and insurance policyholders, having operated since 2009. Among its achievements, ZimPIRT established that pensioners were prejudiced of their pension benefits by insurance companies, and as a follow up, succeeded to persuade the Zimbabwe Government to set up the Justice Smith Commission of Inquiry.

Good morning

Your "Letter from Zimbabwe - More on Bands" of 22 April 2020 refers.

Appended is the scope of a project I've undertaken to record a history of southern African Pipe Bands.

I've also attached the working draft of trying to collect & collate the histories. Extremely rough version - all I'm doing at the moment is collect info and close up gaps.

Please assist with information re Rhodesian Pipe Bands. I have very little information on civilian bands and Rodesian veterans of my acquaintance are unable to assist with military pipe bands such as the Army Engineers, the Rhodesian Regiment and Rhodesian Air Force.
If possible, please assist with contacts contacts who may be able to provide information.

Every little bit of information adds to the picture and often provides a lead to another (as yet unknown) piece of information.

Regards

I have begun a project to record something of all the pipe bands of southern Africa.
If I can interest a publisher, I have a coffee table style book in mind. If not, I would still like to create a record of the pipe band community. Over time bands may amalgamate or cease to exist and the memories die with the members.
I am looking for information re date started / ended / amalgamated etc. and a history of each band. As far as possible, please include references - it will make cross-checking easier. If references not easily available, I would still like whatever information you may have. Pictures welcome.
Criteria:
1) Only southern African pipe bands. There were British regimental bands in southern Africa, especially during the colonial period, but they fall outside the scope. Bands which they inspired or helped create in Africa are included in the scope.
2) A pipe band does not need to have had a long period of existence. King William's Town Miniature Pipe Band existed for one day at the 1974 Eastern Cape Highland Gathering.
3) A band that has sufficient members to register e.g. a grade 2 band and a grade 4 band counts as one band. Gradings can change from season to season and even within a season.
4) Bands that also have / had a junior band or regimental bands that have / had a 1st Bn band and a 2nd Bn band are separate bands.
5) Bands are not required to be currently (or ever) registered with PBASA. Sufficient musicians willing and able to practice and parade together is what matters.
6) I have names of Rhodesian / Zim bands and Gaberone in Botswana. Are / were there any in SWA / Namibia, Angola, Mozambique, Swaziland, Lesotho, Zambia, Malawi

Never forgotten but remembered on this day with special love.

ANDREA ROBINSON

Today is a very hard and painful day for me as I say good bye to my sister Andrea Elizabeth who was only 21 months younger than me so we were very close . We always looked after each other through out our lives whilst she was here. Andrea has suffered for so long in New Zealand with such a dreadful illness, she needed to go and finally be at rest with our mom and Dad who I know will be waiting with open arms.
Andrea has two lovely children Matthew and Ashleigh of whom she was so proud. A lot of you will remember Andrea in our jawling days, fun, witty, beautiful. Andrea fly high. I love you and you will never be forgotten.

ENCHANTING CHILDRENS' BOOK 'GOGGAS'

Written by Zimbabwean Author Cheryl Robertson is the recently published nonfiction book on insects called Goggas: A collection of captivating creepy crawlies, available at all Amazon outlets.
The main aim is to encourage children wherever they are in the world to appreciate insects, to take good care of them and to understand the essential roles that they play in making our planet survivable.
Cheryl has written about insects found all over the world (such as the annoying midge, the praying mantis and the common house fly) and include some that live only in sub-Saharan Africa (mopane worm, chongololo, putzi fly).

The book balances hard facts with fun rhymes, gives the common names, the Shona and Ndebele names and the biological classifications of each creepy crawly, accompanied by quirky illustrations Greg Mandy (Cheryl's son) created while he was growing up.

He was one of those rare kids enthralled by insects so searched for, sometimes caught but always drew anything that crept and crawled. I kept the drawings he created from the age of three until 15 and used them to illustrate this book. Greg - now 30 and a photographer and videographer in the United Kingdom- also created the cover.

The illustrations will appeal to all children but the text is aimed at those aged around 8 and above; adults will also learn a thing or two.

I have written a few press releases with some quotes from various readers just so you know it has been quite well received, maybe you would like to use for the Morning Mirror.

On the blurb of the book's back cover, Jeffrey A. Lockwood, Professor of Natural Sciences & Humanities at the University of Wyoming, USA, writes: 'These are very engaging, entertaining and cleverly informative poems! The humor is lovely, the science is intriguing, and the sense of futility about our controlling the insect world is spot on! The children's artwork was absolutely enchanting. I can see where this would engage young readers with a sense that their art is taken seriously-as it should be.'

Leo Braak, who once lived and worked in Kruger National Park in South Africa and who is now Medical Entomologist and Professor at the Malaria Consortium in Bangkok, Thailand said, 'A delightful and heart-warming introduction to our micro-denizen compatriots which so richly populate our planet and contribute to our well-being in so many ways. Fun to read!'

Sounds like a great birthday or Christmas gift for kids who love creepy crawlies!!
