GOING HOME!

Going home is going to be an adventure!! After our 'Covid 19 Exile' of just over a year, we are heading for home. I gather its not going to be quite like the travelling we were used to last year!!

For starters we have to have yet another Covid Test, my poor brain already has holes in it....No yummy food on the plane, 'Bring Your Own' is the order of the day, and don't count on finding on foodies in the airport, pack your sambos at home!!

When we came from Sweden in January, we had to 'sleepover' in Heathrow, courtesy of Covid, and that promised airport hotel turned out to be a metal bench in the concourse!! We bought a screw cap bottle of wine and a packet of nuts in the duty free in Stockholm, knowing nothing would be open in Heathrow, but we were too tired to even contemplate luke-warm sauvignon blanc!! Masks on the plane are of course obligatory, and there is no conning the crew by taking two hours to eat a packet of pretzels, masks on while chewing (almost) these days....

Our stopover hotel at the Dulles airport has no reception, one receives one's room number and room key on one's mobile!! No room service, no restaurant, hopefully those sambos won't be too dry by the time we find our beds!!

Hotels in the USA have also been interesting to say the least since the pandemic. No such thing as coming back from the beach to find new dry towels and clean bed linen!! Make your own bed and if you want dry towels come down to reception and collect some!! No reduction in price was noted though!!

This is all totally tongue in cheek you understand. The past year has been horrendous for countless of millions of people, how can I even complain about the towel thing when one has lost a parent or even two parents. It's all just trying to make light of an impossible situation instead of sitting down crying on my vaccination certificate!!

THURSDAY 25 MARCH AT 5.30 P.M. THE NOTEBOOK
In 1940s South Carolina, mill worker Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) and rich girl Allie (Rachel McAdams) are desperately in love. But her parents don't approve. When Noah goes off to serve in World War II, it seems to mark the end of their love affair. In the interim, Allie becomes involved with another man (James Marsden). But when Noah returns to their small town years later, on the cusp of Allie's marriage, it soon becomes clear that their romance is anything but over.

- A lovely surprise. Ripe with feeling and lush with physical beauty, it's a love story that swings confidently between age and youth, and avoids every trap along the way. [The Wall Street Journal]
- An old-fashioned movie that delivers an emotional wallop. [San Francisco Chronicle]
- I came out of the cinema wanting to go back in and watch it all over again. [IMDb]
- The best love story I have seen in years. [Larry King]

Admission: US$1.00 [free to Film members]

FRIDAY 26 MARCH AT 5.30 P.M. LA FILLE MAL GARDEE.
Ever since it's triumphant premiere in January 1960, Frederick Ashton's 'La fille mal gardee' has been esteemed as one of his happiest creations, a village love affair set in the idyllic Constable landscape of Ashton's imagination. Marianela Nunez and Carlos Acosta would be show-stoppers in almost any suitable role, but as Lise and Colas they are superb. William Tuckett and Jonathan Howells, in the comic roles of Simone and Alain respectively, are every bit as arresting, both displaying a certain genius for knockabout. The luminously colourful Osbert Lancaster designs, together with the vitality of The Royal Ballet's dancing and vibrant playing from the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House serve to augment the harmless good fun at which Ashton excels.

- La fille mal gardee is sheer perfection, Nunez and Acosta are unsurpassable respectively in the feminine grace and masculine confidence of Ashton's Lise and Colas, and their mimetic skills are delicious. [BBC Music Magazine]
- Altogether, a terrific show. [The Stage]
- This is a dream production of a dream ballet given by a dream team and granted a totally sympathetic recording. [Amazon]

Admission: US$1.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

WEDNESDAY 31 MARCH BACH: MASS IN B MINOR
Like music lovers the world over, John Nelson believes Bach's Mass in B Minor is a pinnacle of Western music. For years he cherished the dream of performing it in the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris with his Ensemble Orchestral de Paris and in 2006 he achieved his ambition with this performance. The other performers are internationally recognized soloists Ruth Ziesak (soprano), Joyce DiDonato (mezzo), Daniel Taylor (alto), Paul Agnew (tenor) and Dietrich Henschel (baritone) with the Maitrise de Notre-Dame choir. Stage director Olivier Simonnet provided a very talented scenography for the performance: the cathedral not only provides a setting for a concert, it is also an artistic element in the performance.

- This is a phenomenal performance of the Mass. John Nelson was fascinating to watch as a conductor who is heart and soul immersed in this music. The orchestra is superb and the performance is in one of the most wonderful churches in the world which adds enormously to the power of the music. [Amazon]
- Watching this DVD is life-enhancing.' [International Record Review]
- An all-star cast.. virtuoso choral singing.. one of the best ever. [The Philadelphia Inquirer]
- Intensely expressive and meticulously shaped.. will bring a lump to your throat. [Fanfare Magazine]

Admission: US$1.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

Good morning

Your "Letter from Zimbabwe - More on Bands" of 22 April 2020 refers.

Appended is the scope of a project I've undertaken to record a history of southern African Pipe Bands.

I've also attached the working draft of trying to collect & collate the histories. Extremely rough version - all I'm doing at the moment is collect info and close up gaps.

Please assist with information re Rhodesian Pipe Bands. I have very little information on civilian bands and Rodesian veterans of my acquaintance are unable to assist with military pipe bands such as the Army Engineers, the Rhodesian Regiment and Rhodesian Air Force.
If possible, please assist with contacts contacts who may be able to provide information.

Every little bit of information adds to the picture and often provides a lead to another (as yet unknown) piece of information.

Regards
Dave Rankin

I have begun a project to record something of all the pipe bands of southern Africa.
If I can interest a publisher, I have a coffee table style book in mind. If not, I would still like to create a record of the pipe band community. Over time bands may amalgamate or cease to exist and the memories die with the members.
I am looking for information re date started / ended / amalgamated etc. and a history of each band. As far as possible, please include references - it will make cross-checking easier. If references not easily available, I would still like whatever information you may have. Pictures welcome.
Criteria:
1) Only southern African pipe bands. There were British regimental bands in southern Africa, especially during the colonial period, but they fall outside the scope. Bands which they inspired or helped create in Africa are included in the scope.
2) A pipe band does not need to have had a long period of existence. King William's Town Miniature Pipe Band existed for one day at the 1974 Eastern Cape Highland Gathering.
3) A band that has sufficient members to register e.g. a grade 2 band and a grade 4 band counts as one band. Gradings can change from season to season and even within a season.
4) Bands that also have / had a junior band or regimental bands that have / had a 1st Bn band and a 2nd Bn band are separate bands.
5) Bands are not required to be currently (or ever) registered with PBASA. Sufficient musicians willing and able to practice and parade together is what matters.
6) I have names of Rhodesian / Zim bands and Gaberone in Botswana. Are / were there any in SWA / Namibia, Angola, Mozambique, Swaziland, Lesotho, Zambia, Malawi

ANDREA ROBINSON

Today is a very hard and painful day for me as I say good bye to my sister Andrea Elizabeth who was only 21 months younger than me so we were very close . We always looked after each other through out our lives whilst she was here. Andrea has suffered for so long in New Zealand with such a dreadful illness, she needed to go and finally be at rest with our mom and Dad who I know will be waiting with open arms .
Andrea has two lovely children Matthew and Ashleigh of whom she was so proud. A lot of you will remember Andrea in our jawling days , fun, witty, beautiful. Andrea fly high. I love you and you will never be forgotten.

ENCHANTING CHILDRENS' BOOK 'GOGGAS'

Written by Zimbabwean Author Cheryl Robertson is the recently published nonfiction book on insects called Goggas: A collection of captivating creepy crawlies, available at all Amazon outlets.
The main aim is to encourage children wherever they are in the world to appreciate insects, to take good care of them and to understand the essential roles that they play in making our planet survivable.
Cheryl has written about insects found all over the world (such as the annoying midge, the praying mantis and the common house fly) and include some that live only in sub-Saharan Africa (mopane worm, chongololo, putzi fly).

The book balances hard facts with fun rhymes, gives the common names, the Shona and Ndebele names and the biological classifications of each creepy crawly, accompanied by quirky illustrations Greg Mandy (Cheryl's son) created while he was growing up.

He was one of those rare kids enthralled by insects so searched for, sometimes caught but always drew anything that crept and crawled. I kept the drawings he created from the age of three until 15 and used them to illustrate this book. Greg - now 30 and a photographer and videographer in the United Kingdom- also created the cover.

The illustrations will appeal to all children but the text is aimed at those aged around 8 and above; adults will also learn a thing or two.

I have written a few press releases with some quotes from various readers just so you know it has been quite well received, maybe you would like to use for the Morning Mirror.

On the blurb of the book's back cover, Jeffrey A. Lockwood, Professor of Natural Sciences & Humanities at the University of Wyoming, USA, writes: 'These are very engaging, entertaining and cleverly informative poems! The humor is lovely, the science is intriguing, and the sense of futility about our controlling the insect world is spot on! The children's artwork was absolutely enchanting. I can see where this would engage young readers with a sense that their art is taken seriously-as it should be.'

Leo Braak, who once lived and worked in Kruger National Park in South Africa and who is now Medical Entomologist and Professor at the Malaria Consortium in Bangkok, Thailand said, 'A delightful and heart-warming introduction to our micro-denizen compatriots which so richly populate our planet and contribute to our well-being in so many ways. Fun to read!'

Sounds like a great birthday or Christmas gift for kids who love creepy crawlies!!
