THE PLUMBAGO FLOWER IS MAKING A COMEBACK I AM GLAD TO SAY.

ONCE THE DARLING SHRUB OF THE NATION BACK IN THE SIXTIES, THE PLUMBAGO
FLOWER BECAME RATHER 'NON YOU' FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS .... IT WAS AFTER
ALL THAT RASCAL CECIL JOHN RHODES WHO ADOPTED IT AS HIS FAVOURITE
FLOWER.

THE JUNIOR SCHOOL I WENT TO CELEBRATED 'PLUMBAGO DAY' HEAVEN FORBID...
FIENDISH COLONIALISTS THAT THEY WERE IN THOSE DAYS, AND OUR SCHOOL
UNIFORM WAS EVEN PATTERNED WITH PRETTY LITTLE PLUMBAGO FLOWERS.

IF MY MEMORY SERVES ME RIGHT WE WERE GIVEN SPRIGS OF THE ENCHANTING
LITTLE PALE BLUE FLOWER ON PLUMBAGO DAY.  MAYBE SOMEONE WITH A BETTER
MEMORY THAN MINE CAN SUPPLY A FEW MORE DETAILS.

BUT THE PLUMBAGO BUSH THEN BECAME RATHER 'PASSE" A BIT LIKE THAT
UBIQUITOUS RUBBER BUSH THAT ALWAYS GREW AROUND GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS IN
THE OLDEN DAYS, AND THAT PRETTY LITTLE FLOWER WAS SELDOM SEEN FOR A
NUMBER OF YEARS.

BUT I HAVE NOTICED A VERY SERIOUS RE-EMERGENCE OF THE PLUMBAGO IN
RECENT TIMES. EVERYWHERE ONE LOOKS IN SOUTH AFRICA, THERE IS A
PROFUSION OF THE BEAUTIFUL LITTLE BUSH, FLOWERING HAPPILY AT ALL
INTERSECTIONS, IN ALL GARDENS, AND WHAT A WELCOME ADDITION TO GARDENING
WORLD IT IS ONCE AGAIN.

I AM NOT SURE IF IT HAS PERHAPS BEEN HYBRIDISED AS THE PLUMBAGOS I
REMEMBER WERE USUALLY IN RATHER STIFF FORMAL HEDGES, AND THE MORE
MODERN PLUMBAGO SHRUB IS SMALLER AND SOFTER LOOKING, BUT I WILL
CERTAINLY FIND A SPOT FOR ONE IN MY GARDEN AS SOON AS I CAN.

GIRLS' COLLEGE REUNION
LONDON, 20004

On Saturday 3 April, a highly successful Girls' College Reunion was
held at a function room in South London. Over 160 people attended the
event, with a remarkable range of Collegians, from those who were
founder pupils in 1983 to those who had left College at the end of
2003. There were also a number of husbands and partners present, as
well as a welcome number of "guests" from Convent, Falcon, CBC and
Plumtree.

Superbly organized by Sinead Tighe and Danni Mason (Moss), the event
enabled many old friends to meet up and have a lively and sociable
evening together. Collegians attended from different parts of London,
but special mention must be made of those who came long distances from
Ireland, Wales and various parts of England.

A number of parents were also present, including Sean and Judy Tighe,
Lyn Scholefield, Alison Friend, Mrs Gillet and Mandy Denton. We were
delighted to have no fewer than four former Head Girls at the function
- Hayley Sparks (1988), Vickie Fleet (2000), Emma Soullier (2002) and
Megan Ross (2003). It is obviously impossible to mention all the
Collegians who were able to attend, but perhaps special mention could
be made of those who started at Girls' College in its foundation year
of 1983, namely Christine Thompson, Keri Fuller, Hayley Sparks, Sharon
Gillet and Nicky Fenton.

Sinead Tighe made a very warm and welcoming speech to Ross and Riette
Fuller, both recently retired after 21 years at the College, and she
made a presentation of wine and flowers. In his reply, Ross thanked
everyone for attending the first ever Girls' College Reunion to be held
out of Zimbabwe, and said the he hoped this would be the forerunner of
future annual events in London and even in South Africa. Ross said that
the College continued to be the best school in Zimbabwe and that high
standards were being maintained in all areas of the school - academic,
sporting and cultural. He also announced the good news that the Beit
Trust would be funding a new Music Centre at the College, due to be
commenced within the next few months. During the evening, an amount of
£240 was raised towards the purchase of musical instruments for the new
Music Centre.

The fun, laughter, reminiscences, nostalgia and good spirits lasted
until the small hours of Sunday morning. Everyone agreed that it had
been an wonderful evening together and well worth repeating in the
future.

We had some wonderful comments in the book which circulated during the
evening, capped by a comment from Kim Blignaut who said, "I never went
to GC! I was at the Convent, but after tonight you could never say
there was any rivalry between our schools! A great party!!!"

With reference to the Aussie looking for  LEON SCHUSTER videos.  You
can get them at most video rental places in Aussie like Blockbusters
or Video Ezy.  Alternatively tell him to look up on the Rhodesian
website for the local contact of the nearest Rhodesian/South African
club and I am sure they will know where to get them.  We watched some
last year I am sure it came from the local video store as

HELEN PALMGREN
So sad to hear of the passing of darling Helen. She was SUCH an
inspiration, and dearly loved by SO many, especially those who came to
know the Lord thru' Christian Womens'' Club. Helen was a founder member
in the early 90's in Byo & her love for her Lord inspired her tireless
efforts year after year!!! Her zest for life & sense of fun will be an
endearing memory.

Helen will be missed by all the ladies who got to know her over the
years, but she is definitely where she will be serenely happy and at
peace....in the arms of her beloved Lord. 

My condolences go to all her immediate family, as well as the family of
God in Byo who knew & loved Helen.  
I will treasure her memory with much love & joy.
