So that was New Year's Eve 2020
Bed by ten and then woken up with ten minutes, exactly, of brilliant fireworks at midnight. The Swedish people are a disciplined lot, the fireworks started at 11.58 and ended at 12.08!! Our house is on a hill and the entire horizon around us was lit up with an incredible display.
Quite different, remarkably different to anything else we had ever experienced. New Years Eve or 'New Years' as the Millennials call it, should be exciting, glamorous, and much anticipated. Worth dressing up for and making a statement
My mind drifted off to Bulawayo's halcyon days when New Year's Eve was champagne, dancing, balloons, party hats, fairy lights live bands and Auld Lang Syne......
We had some splendid venues for New Years Eve didn't we Remember the MacMurray Hall in the Grand Hotel with that amazing sprung dance floor Where for would wear the DJs,
full-length gowns, (gloves even ) and really dance until midnight. And here I mean DANCE!! The waltz, the foxtrot, the tango and the cha cha cha!! Hopefully someone can fill me in with the names of the Dance Bands I am sure Jimmy McGroarty and Jack Buckle were in there somewhere
We would sit at elegant tables, partake of a delicious dinner, and then shimmy until midnight and join arms to sing Auld Lang Syne..
Then there were the New Years Eve Balls which were booked out at the Hotel Victoria, some held in the Rainbow Room, and some in the magnificent downstairs function room, a glorious room where every important function in Bulawayo took place at some time or other.
Windermere Hotel on the Vic Falls road had some wonderful New Year Bashes, and Mum even talked of New Year during and after the Second World War at the Matopos Hotel!!
How many readers would have danced the night away at the Round House Later the Hotel Rio on the Essexvale Road It's now a Village for underprivileged children but I am sure those walls would have tales to tell
Glass Castle Cecil Hotel Carlton Hotel Selborne Hotel Greys Inn They too had their place in Bulawayo's glorious entertainment past. The Churchill Arms was a fairly new addition to our hostelries, on the Matopos Road, resplendent in the Old Tudor Style, as was the Holiday Inn.
As our family grew we would make for the lake!! Christmas and New Year at Olive Beadle, Mlibizi, Binga were glorious times, albeit a constant fight with mozzies and creatures, the sizzling hot days on the lake made special memories. The Eastern Highlands also bring back delicious New Year tales, Troutbeck Inn, Tsanga Madziwa, Chimanimani, our children still year for holidays in those magical destinations.
Of course our Piece De Resistance in Bulawayo would be to drive out to the Matopos and watch the sunrise into the New Year at Efifi on the giant great grey dwala that is Pomongwe.
What will 2021 bring us We pray not the same as 2020... will there be a respite to this horror of pandemic, will the world be able ever to recover How many people will be taken away by the scourge
Only God knows and we just have to do our best to make some lives a little better if we possibly can, by tiny deeds that might just make a difference.

Bulawayo Help Network appeal on behalf of Michael Bullivant
Michael Bullivant was awarded an OBE in 2019 for services to music, education and UK/Zimbabwe relations. He has spent his life in service of humanity and of the Bulawayo community in particular.
He now urgently requires a hip replacement, and due to the historical collapse of pensions and inadequate medical aids in Zimbabwe, he finds himself in the unfortunate situation where he cannot afford this essential operation. It is time for Bulawayo to give something back to Michael. The cost of the operation as far as we can estimate is US$12000. We are still to finalize the confusing information from the Medical Aid
Help us help Michael get a new hip.
We are raising money both within Zimbabwe and outside.

JANUARY AT THE ACADEMY
Regrettably the new lockdown means that there will be no 'January at the
Academy' and
plans for the coming month including DVDs have had to be put on hold.
We hope we may be able to resume in February and will issue a revised
programme towards the end of the month with fingers firmly crossed that life
will then get back to something approaching normal.

TREVOR JOHN HODGSKIN (1930-2021)
Trevor emigrated to Southern Rhodesia from Jersey in the Channel Islands in 1953. In 1956 he started Radiator & Tinning in Bulawayo with just one employee (the gardener) and his wife Margaret. Over the next 50 years the business grew from a radiator repair shop to manufacturing automotive radiators and non-ferrous metals, exporting all over the world. In the course of his business,Trevor gave employment and training to many thousands of people.
Trevor retired to Jersey in 2000, but Zimbabwe was always in his thoughts.
He leaves sons, Paul and Jeremy and a daughter Deborah, as well as seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
An obituary on Dave Ellman-Brown
Born 9th September 1938
Passed away 31st December 2020
Age 82 years
We have just lost one of Zimbabwe's most illustrious sport administrators, Mr David Ellman-Brown. He had not only excelled in his accounting profession but he was also one of the longest serving cricket administrators in this country.
Zimbabwe should be proud of the dedication and commitment of Mr Ellman-Brown that expanded for more than five decades.
Dave, and 'Ellers' as he fondly known was born in Bulawayo on the 9th September 1938. He completed his high school at St George's College in Harare.
Dave played cricket and hockey at Old Georgians from a young age. He was a keen tennis player, very competitive.
Dave served on the Mashonaland Board and progressed to be the President of the Zimbabwe Cricket Union, Manager of the National Team, Chief Executive of Zimbabwe Cricket and member of Zimbabwe Sports and Recreation Commission
Dave was an accomplished Chartered Accountant and Financial Consultant. Allan Wishart, a close colleague recalls that 'In his profession as a partner of Derry Ellman-Brown and Fraser (Cooper Brothers) he was always astute and highly motivated. He was always competitive and full of fun.'
He became a senior partner of Coopers and Lybrand and served and held directorships in many boards, including being Chairman of Cairns Holdings Ltd and Stanbic Bank.
Dave's involvement in cricket administration started way back in the 1960's as Treasurer of the Mashonaland Cricket Association. He was appointed as Manager of the National Team from 1982 to 1990 and was Manager of the team when Zimbabwe beat Bermuda to win its first ICC Trophy (Associate Members) on 10th July 1982, which allowed Zimbabwe a place along the seven test Playing Nations to compete in their First Prudential World Cup in 1983. Dave was the manager of the National team at this inaugural World Cup Team's debut in 1983, hosted in England.
The late Alwyn Pichanick and Dave, made a formidable duo in negotiating with ICC in ensuring that Zimbabwe attained full Test status in 1992. Dave was the President of the Board at the time. That same year, Dave relinquished this post to make way for the late Peter Chingoka to take over the position of President.
In 1992/3 Dave was conferred the position of being a life president of ZC with the late Alwyn Pichanick for their services to cricket in the country. They were also made Honorary Life Members of the Marylebone Cricket Council (MCC) in London fo for their contribution to Zimbabwe Cricket.
After Dave retired from Coopers & Lybrand, he was appointed as the Chief Executive of Zimbabwe Cricket, during that period he was also a member of the ICC Finance Committee and the Cricket Management Committee. During his tenure Dave ushered the game of cricket to be expanded and popularised amongst the majority of the population.
In 2013 he was appointed in the Sports and Recreational Commission. His contribution here was well respected.
Recently, in 2018, the SRC suspended the Zimbabwe Cricket for maladministration and an Interim Committee was appointed by the SRC. Dave Ellman-Brown was appointed as the interim Chairman of the SRC committee. This matter was amicably resolved with the ICC intervention at a meeting in London with both the ZC and interim committee represented by Dave Ellman-Brown.
Dave Ellman-Brown's contribution not only to cricket but to all sports in general will be sorely missed. He leaves a fantastic legacy for all sports administrators to emulate.
Condolences to Dave's wife Jan, his children and grand-children and all the members of the bereaved family. Former National players and administrators have all expressed their condolences through the social media platform.
A fitting tribute of his passing notice, amplifies his life.
' We are devastated yet honoured to have had the pleasure of this stoic, strong and good man in our lives whom will no doubt leave a legendary legacy'
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
