Jacaranda Spotting

The wearing of the colour of the jacarandas is obligatory in Zimbabwe in October. I have a dear natty little purple outfit that gets worn faithfully every year at this time.

It must be in the blood, as something strange always happens to Bulawayans at this time of the year. It starts hotting up in July, It is a bit like watching a tennis match as one sets off into town for a "hunting and gathering " session.
Heads twisting and turning in glee, WHO WILL SPOT THE FIRST JACARANDA BLOSSOM

Well last year it was Tracey, who one year saw them in July but this year it was Bruce M. from Sunningdale, who as early as 29 August, saw the first pale lilac spring buds !!

'Up here in my Erie' said 'there is a magnificent sight each day. In the evening over 400 sacred ibis fly into the trees opposite here and every morning just after six, against a golden sky, they fly out for the day. Some of them pass so close that you can hear their wing-beats."

Back to Jacarandas - now the tree pundits cower in horror at the thought of these frightful "Exotics" but we old timers live breathe and eat happiness during Jacaranda blossom time, which lasts I might add, from now until February !! I heard with horror that they were culling Jacaranda trees in the Matopos some years ago!

Spring time brings madness to many places in the world, they hurtle round maypoles in England, they eat giant white asparagus and drink tart new Beaujolais in France. In China they decorate their front doors with bright banners featuring the Chinese character "fu" (meaning blessing or happiness) You have a bit of leeway here with your decor as you can either hang the poster the correct way up, or upside down if you feel that way !!

In Ireland the have Morris dancing and ceilidhs, in Argentina the school kids are given the day off from their studies.

But in September/October we have traditionally celebrated the Jacarandas. Do you remember the Jacaranda Festivals of days gone by When shop windows, especially Meikles, would dress their windows in a glorious profusion of lilac, lavender, amethyst, heliotrope and tanzanite.

Of course Borrow Street Pool would open on the First of September and then on the second Saturday of Spring the Jacaranda Ball would be held at the MacMurray Hall in the Grand Hotel. Aah, that sprung dance floor made of highly polished wood, we would "trip the light fantastic" till dawn and at midnight the Jacaranda Queen would be crowned !!

Names spring to mind of beautiful Bulawayo girls like Gaynor Watts, Lorna Levin and Wendy Jocks, all Jacaranda Queens from an Halcyon Age.....

Don't forget the Jacaranda Float procession where all the big names in Business would lend their trucks to various organisations, schools and clubs and a magnificent array of "Floats" would parade through the city streets.

The Jacaranda Queen and her Princesses would be on the front float, sitting in gilded thrones borrowed from the theatre club, dressed in of course the beautiful colours of the Jacaranda Blossoms.

This year I noticed a couple of Tree Wisterias, laden with their heavy cernuous garlands, which were trying vain to outshine the Jacarandas and they were doing a very good job too !!

THE ACADEMY AND PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO

regular audience for DVDs, it has been decided that the starting time will

at 5.15 p.m. and 1917 on 12 November at 6.00 p.m. with a supper interval -
see below.
Teaching has resumed at the Academy and the usual eleven-week term will end
on Friday 27 November. The Academy will remain open until Friday 11
December for make-up lessons etc. Full details from the office which is
open from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. - or Tel: 60684 / 67195.
The Note, the Academy coffee shop, is open and is available for take-aways
and deliveries as well as light meals before evening DVDs..

THURSDAY 5 NOVEMBER AT 5.15 P.M. LINE OF DUTY 1
The final episode of 'Line of Duty', the BBC police procedural television
series which became BBC Two's best-performing drama series in ten year.
Series 2 will be shown in the second half of January 2021.
This is one of the most exciting and intense TV series I have watched in
years! The acting is outstanding, and the storyline twists and turns in the
most unexpected ways. [Metacritic]
Admission: US$1.00 [free to Film members]

FRIDAY 6 NOVEMBER AT 5.15 P.M. VICTORIA - A BALLET
Passion, tragedy, fierce devotion. Queen Victoria's diaries revealed a life
so fascinating that her daughter Beatrice tried to rewrite history. Her
irrepressible love for Albert sparked a royal dynasty. But his untimely
death brought the world's most powerful woman to her knees with grief.
Northern Ballets new biopic, choreographed by Cathy Marston, 'one of
Britain's most interesting choreographers' (Evening Standard), brings the
sensational story of Victoria to life in dance.
Marston's choreography is as beautifully orchestrated as Philip Feeney
https://northernballet.com/biography/philip-feeney 's cinematic score,
which itself does much of the storytelling; design and dramaturgy are
equally impressive with lead performances of real depth. It is a remarkable
achievement. [Guardian]
Northern Ballet's new biopic 'Victoria' combines grandness with emotional
depth. Cathy Marston's ballet sees its heroine as both woman and queen,
image and person. Thoughtful, ambitious and vividly danced, it's another
success for a company going from strength to strength. [Independent]
There are so many good ideas in this ballet and beautifully choreographical
flourishes. [Express]
Admission: US$1.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

THURSDAY 12 NOVEMBER AT N.B. 6.00 1917
1917 will be shown In conjunction with the MOTHS to mark Armistice Day. The
bar will be open from 5.00 p.m. A light supper will be available with samosa
served before the film and a hamburger in the interval., cost including
admission to the film: US$5.00. The supper must be ordered in advance -
full details from and orders to Julie Bonett on 465581 (Femina Garments).
E-mail: femina@netconnect.co.zw.

The film was released at the end of 2019, directed and produced by Sam
Mendes and starring George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman, with Mark
Strong, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden, Claire Duburcq, Colin Firth, and
Benedict Cumberbatch in supporting roles.
April 1917, the Western Front. Two British soldiers are sent to deliver an
urgent message to an isolated regiment. If the message is not received in
time the regiment will walk into a trap and be massacred. To get to the
regiment they will need to cross through enemy territory. Time is of the
essence and the journey will be fraught with danger.
It is a stunning film, fully deserving of all the gongs that will end up on
the already-crowded Mendes mantelpiece. [Daily Mail]
The film is thrilling, moving on effectively from one shocking set piece to
another, studding the narrative too with starry cameos. [London Evening
Standard]
Gripping, heart-stopping, blood- and mud-soaked, immersive and
unforgettable. [Chicago Sun-Times]
Admission: US$1.00 [free to Film members]

FRIDAY 13 NOVEMBER AT 5.15 P.M. BEETHOVEN: VIOLIN CONCERTO / TCHAIKOVSKY:
PATHETIQUE SYMPHONY
Herbert von Karajan was born on 5 April 1908 and a hundred years later as a
celebration of the anniversary this concert was given in the Golden Hall of
Vienna's Musikverein by the Berlin Philharmonic under Seiji Ozawa with
Anne-Sophie Mutter as soloist. It left its audience 'hovering between hushed
reverence and deafening exultation'.
A triumph of remembrance. [Die Welt]
For Anne-Sophie Mutter the saying 'Make every note count' becomes less a
vague cliche and more a matter of fact. Her violin playing has an
imagination, a curiosity and a near-endless reserve of psychic energy. [The
New York Times]
Karajan's 'Berliner' never sounded better, evoking 'a time which
self-confidently sought the private and subjective in music, and believed it
could find them in the mirror of the works'. [Frankfurter Allgemeine
Zeitung]
Anne Sophie Mutter is in stunning form supported by the Berliners in
sparkling form, with immaculate conducting from Seiji Ozawa. In
Tchaikovsky's 'Pathetique Symphony', one sees Ozawa urging the BPO in a
dramatic account with exciting sonic dynamics very well recorded . How the
audience responded. What a concert . If you buy just one music disc this
year, buy this one!
[Amazon]
Admission: US$1.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

My name is Mauritia Messina and my sister and I are looking into our late mothers adoption. Can I possibly post on your newsletter happy to pay just let me know payment details. I live in Brisbane Australia. My sister Renee has put a lot of research into trying to get info, through ancestry. She would be able to send details.
I would like to post the following:

DESPERATELY SEEKING INFORMATION IN REGARD TO VERA CYNTHIA BLAKEMAN NEE TRIBE ORIGINAL BIRTH NAME JEANETTE TAYLOR BORN DURBAN NATAL.

Hi, my sister and I are trying to find the adoption papers of our Mother Vera Cynthia Blakeman Ne'e Tribe. She was born December 11th 1942. We are searching for her biological Father.
Our mother was born JEANETTE TAYLOR 11-12-1941 at the Homestead Durban Natal - adopted by Rhodesian couple Kim & Gladys Tribe who named her Vera Cynthia Tribe. They resided in Shiloh Road Sauerstown Bulawayo.
My Mother's mother, Violet Phillip Stewart Mathewson born 1912 Transvaal- married a Herbert Lester Taylor who died, I believe her biological father might be Abraham Schwartz as I have done a DNA test through Ancestry.com and am 25% Jewish and have matches with this family name - I am desperately trying to piece the puzzle together and am looking for a genealogy specialist who can access these documents. I would be eternally grateful for any help, many thanks in anticipation. I, Mauritia Messina reside in Brisbane Qld and my sister Renee Thomson in Western Australia- born Bulawayo Rhodesia.
Please if you can direct me to contacts who can legitimately help, we would be very grateful.
