RAY 'Ray' is a 2004 film telling the story of Ray Charles (played by Jamie Foxx), music legend. Told in his adult life with flashbacks to his youth we see his humble origins in Florida, his turbulent childhood, which included losing his brother and then his sight at the age of seven, his rise as pianist in a touring band, writing his own songs and running his own band, and then stardom. His addiction to drugs and its effect on his working life and family life is not ignored. The film received critical acclaim and was a major box office success. Jamie Foxx creates such a real and vivid person that we almost forget that he is re-enacting someone else's life. [Common Sense Media]Foxx's performance is nothing short of amazing, and Hackford's film overall does fine justice to Charles' musical legend and legacy. [Empire] N.B. 'Ray' runs for two-and-a half hours so the interval will be short and The Note will close at 5.00. Food will only be available before the film and, as well as burgers, etc., coffees, smoothies and milk shakes swill also be available. Admission: US$1.00 [free to Film members] THURSDAY 24 SEPTEMBER AT N.B. 5.00 P.M. STAR WARS: REVENGE OF THE SITH Another series resumes! The Jedi Order is on the brink of collapse and Anakin Skywalker no longer believes in the wisdom of his master, Obi-Wan Kenobi. As The Force calls him to decide Padme's fate, Anakin will desperately explore every possibility to save his wife from imminent death in childbirth. All the "Star Wars" movies will continue to entertain us for many years to come. They were grand fun, and this last one's a corker. [Chicago Tribune] "Star Wars: Episode III" fixed everything Episode II did. The story is much better and especially darker. It's just great and I think it's the best "Star Wars" Episode ever. [Metacritic] Admission: US$1.00 [free to Film members] FRIDAY 25 SEPTEMBER AT N.B. 5.00 P.M. SIR JOHN BARBIROLLI Sir John Barbirolli died fifty years ago on 30 July 1970. He has, of course, close associations with Bulawayo having spent a month here for the Rhodes Centenary Festival - and in the course of his stay he laid the foundation stone of the Academy on 30 June 1953. Although a prolific recording artist, little of his work survives on film bur here is a complete concert with the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 3 February 3 1959. It finds the conductor in exemplary form, leading performances of Brahms' Symphony No. 2, Walton's Partita for Orchestra, Delius's 'The Walk to the Paradise Garden' (from 'A Village Romeo and Juliet'), and Barbirolli's own arrangement of selections from the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, entitled 'An Elizabethan Suite'. Vintage Barbirolli. It's good to find a video of him at work with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. It can't be pretended that this is in first class sound and the photography is black and white. Nevertheless the music making shines through. This DVD was a great "find" among other treasures from the recording archives of those television companies that regularly televised concerts.
