The Story of Mothers' and Fathers' Days

Father's Day in our house was raucous due to the fact that there is a four year old in the house. Normally a trip to the Egg Harbour Cafe would have been the Father's Day treat but because of Social Distancing, we celebrated Father's Day at home.

Mommy made Buttermilk Pancakes. Four Year old cooked up a storm on his own little stove and then 'helped' Mommy make pancakes in his tiny frying pan, all very tense over a proper gas stove!! Brunch 'Al Fresco' as the weather was perfect, followed by Tomato Cocktails for the Dads!!

Father's Day is a day of honouring fatherhood and paternal bonds, as well as the influence of fathers in society. In Catholic countries of Europe, it has been celebrated on March 19 as Saint Joseph's Day since the Middle Ages. In America, Father's Day was founded by Sonora Smart Dodd and celebrated on the third Sunday of June for the first time in 1910. It is held on various days in many parts of the world all throughout the year, often in the months of March, May and June. I believe in Australia it is in September.
Father's day complements similar celebrations honouring family members, such as Mother's Day, Siblings Day and Grandparents' Day, roll on Grandparent's Day!!

The earliest Mother's Day celebrations can be traced back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honour of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. During the 1600's, England celebrated a day called "Mothering Sunday". Celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter*), "Mothering Sunday" honoured the mothers of England.

During this time many of the England's poor worked as servants for the wealthy. As most jobs were located far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday the staff would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers. A special cake, called the mothering cake, was often brought along to provide a festive touch.

As Christianity spread throughout Europe the celebration changed to honour the "Mother Church" - the spiritual power that gave them life and protected them from harm. Over time the church festival blended with the Mothering Sunday celebration . People began honouring their mothers as well as the church.

In the United States Mother's Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe as a day dedicated to peace. Ms. Howe would hold organised Mother's Day meetings in Boston, Mass ever year.

While many countries of the world celebrate their own Mother's Day at different times throughout the year, there are some countries such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium which also celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May.

Some Motherly Advice...
Always wear clean underwear; you never know when you'll have an accident.
Don't make that face or it'll freeze in that position.
Be careful or you'll put your eye out.
What if everyone jumped off a cliff Would you do it, too
You have enough dirt behind those ears to grow potatoes!
Close that door! Were you born in a barn
If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.
Don't put that in your mouth; you don't know where it's been!

M ... is for the million things she gave me,
O... means only that she's growing old,
T... is for the tears she shed to save me,
H... is for her heart of purest gold;
E... is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
R... means right, and right she'll always be.
Put them all together, they spell "MOTHER,"

THE ACADEMY AND PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO

The Academy office is open from 9.00 to 1.00 each morning and the building itself throughout normal working hours but it has been decided that, in terms of the Covid-19 legislation and its requirements, the Academy should not resume lessons for the time being This decision will be reviewed as soon as there is a firm date for schools to re-open.

The Academy facilities are available for hire and use including the library, books are on sale and DVDs will continue as advertised.

The Note, the Academy coffee shop, has re-opened under new management and is available for take-aways and deliveries.

THURSDAY 25 JUNE AT 7.00 P.M. THE RING WITHOUT WORDS /WAGNER: DIE WALKURE - ACT I
'Die Walkure' was first performed 150 years ago on 26 June 1870 and is perhaps the most deeply moving and romantic of the 'Ring' operas. As it lasts a shade over four hours, it will be shown over two nights and preceded by an orchestral summary of the entire 'Ring' cycle with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Lorin Maazel.
'The Ring without Words' is spectacular in its vividness. Wotan makes a passionately romantic farewell to his daughter, with the Berlin strings creating a movingly powerful climax and Maazel gives great impact to Hagen's call and Siegfried's Funeral Music. [Gramophone]
This was a very well-sung and orchestrated production of 'Die Walkure'. Jessye Norman was a superb Sieglinde and Behrens an anguished and believable Brunnhilde. [Amazon]
Admission: $30.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

FRIDAY 26 JUNE AT 7.00 P.M. WAGNER: DIE WALKURE - ACTS II & III
'The riveting, devastating drama of "Die Walkure" involves complex relationships between brother and sister, husband and wife, father and daughter... Wagner's music drama burns itself on our memories, exciting us with the emotional intensity of its lyrical outbursts and its incredible power and majesty.'
The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra is one of the stars of this performance. The playing is always secure, but goes beyond mere confidence into a gloriously exciting projection of the score's multifarious combinations of colours, nurtured by Levine to produce a richness of detail unsurpassed in any other recording. [Gramophone]
The 1990 Metropolitan Opera performance with James Levine conducting is a performance with few frills and no gimmicks, just extraordinarily fine singing and orchestral playing. There is no point in this where you find yourself asking why the director did something: this is the sort of production which can easily be defended as serving Wagner's intentions. [Presto Classical]
Admission: $30.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

THURSDAYS 2, 9, 16 & 23 JULY AT 7.00 P.M. THE LAST KINGDOM
Starring Alexander Dreymon, Eliza Butterworth and Ian Hart 'The Last Kingdom',derived from Bernard Cornwell's novels, begins in 872 when many of the separate kingdoms of what we now know as England have fallen to the invading Danes, leaving the great kingdom of Wessex standing alone and defiant under the command of King Alfred. Against this turbulent backdrop lives our hero, Uhtred. Born the son of a Saxon nobleman, he is captured by the Danes and raised as one of their own. Forced to choose between the country of his birth and the people of his upbringing, his loyalties are ever tested. What is he Saxon or Dane On a quest to reclaim his birthright, Uhtred must tread a dangerous path between both sides if he is to play his part in the birth of a new nation and, ultimately, recapture his ancestral lands...
There were satisfyingly high production values, a bloodthirsty appetite for violence and a proper cliffhanger. Sign me up. [Daily Telegraph]
Most importantly of all, it's a ton of fun. [Guardian]
There are no dragons in 'Last Kingdom', or need for fantasy at all, for that matter. History proves every bit as engaging as make-believe. [San Francisco Chronicle]
Admission:$50.00[free to Film members]

FRIDAY 3 JULY AT 7.00 P.M. THE MERRY WIDOW - BALLET
'The Merry Widow ballet' is an adaptation of Franz Lehar's 'The Merry Widow' originally created for The Australian Ballet by Sir Robert Helpmann. This production comes from the National Ballet of Canada with the Australian dancer John Meehan in the role of Count Danilo, who is ordered by the Pontevedrian Embassy to avert their impending bankruptcy by marrying into the fortunes of the recently widowed Hanna Glawari - beautifully portrayed by the Canadian prima ballerina Karen Kain.
High romance with high balletic style, a marvellous blend of spectacular romantic choreography with the glorious Lehar music. It's sensuous and it's fun -- and who can resist can-can girls [Toronto Theatre]
The National Ballet of Canada deliver yet another resounding success.'The Merry Widow' is entertaining, musically satisfying, lavish sets. A beautiful and outstanding production. [Amazon]
Karen Kain and John Meehan make a most engaging Widow and Count Danilo, while Yoko Ichino and Raymond Smith are kept very busy in their substantial secondary roles. All four are accomplished dancers and successfully convey the appropriate degree of comic high-spirits that the ballet requires. [MusicWeb International]
Admission: $50.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

NATY MIDDELDORF

Our dear friend Naty Middeldorf passed away on Sunday 21st June 2020 at Savyon Lodge, Bulawayo. Condolences to his family and friends. An inspirational man of many talents and interests. His artistic displays at Haddon and Sly were magnificent and memorable. He will be remembered for his wit, humour and zest for life.
He will be sadly missed by Lynne and Joan Alexander.

Sydney Allan Gregory

Allan Gregory, a husband, brother, father and best friend went to join the Lord on 9th June 2020 in Komatipoort. He was surrounded by Cheryl, Dion and Chrissie.

We are planning a memorial bring and braai at lower hillside dams on Sunday 28th June 2020. For more info please Whatsapp or message Talana on 0785625921.

Rest in peace my dear daddy, gone from our sights but never from our hearts.

Talana

Norman Simister
Very sad to hear of the passing of our very dear old friend, Norman Simister on 16th June. Les and I were very blessed to have been able to visit Norman and his companion Barbara at their home in the British Legion complex last year where we were once again able to experience Norman's tremendous sense of humour and his kindness, generosity and old world charm. It was a memorable couple of days and good to see how well Norman had settled into England. As a man of great faith, we have no doubt that Norman is at rest in God's eternal kingdom.
Our love & best wishes go to all who knew and loved him.
Allen & Les Lang ( Mutare)

VERNON ROBERTS

It is with sadness, and also with gratitude for his life, that I note here the death of my father, Vernon Roberts, that occurred yesterday morning in Tyler Texas. (06 July 1930 to 16 June 2020). My mom, brother and I were all with him at home. He did his National Service at age 17 in 1947 and served for 30 years, doing call-ups in the engineers, followed by the infantry, till we emigrated in 1977. He was doing operational call ups on the Eastern Border while I was serving in the infantry in the Northeast and I still have "Forces Mail" letters that he wrote to me while he was serving. When he and his "old" friends did call ups, they told their commanding officers that they wanted to do patrols just like the "young guys" and not be treated like old men, and that's what they did. Dad was almost completely deaf and would lie in an ambush, holding his hearing aid in front of him, so he could hear what was going on. A man of honesty and integrity whose word was his bond. A faithful husband to his wife of 65 years and a loving and involved father to his two sons.
An outstanding man and an honourable soldier who served his country for 30 years. I couldn't be more proud and thankful for him. He made it to my mom's 89th birthday and was just 3 weeks short of his 90th.
