WASHING MY DIRTY SOCKS IN PUBLIC

Sadly the imposition of water rationing has descended upon us yet again in Bulawayo.

But then I suppose we should be grateful that we have any water at all.

The Bulawayo City Council recently decommissioned Lower Ncema dam after it reached 6,49% water level, bringing to three the number of decommissioned dams, a development which has worsened the water situation in the city which will see the local authority extending the water rationing to 144 hours out a possible 168 hours per week.

Many people in Zimbabwe have to carry their daily bucketful on their heads for miles, however it is what one is accustomed to that is meaningful.

Fuel rationing is ghastly, bread rationing is dreadful, going without sugar has never bothered me personally but water rationing is indeed an imposition !!

Especially when the City fathers have been talking endlessly about augmenting our water supplies for the city since the year 1906 !!

We housewives are a resilient bunch, we have had to put up with much worse things in our beloved country, what could be worse than death or having your home bulldozed down around your ears, absolutety no comparison I know but water rationing, when it could have been avoided, sucks !!

So back we go to recycling the bath-water, first you use it for the more than ample bod, transfer it to the laundry, the pour it down the loo !!

Back to those mazoe bottles filled with sand, placed in the toilet cistern. We have those old fashioned cisterns, (the house was after all built in 1952), which hold practically all of our entire daily ration.

Back to "save water, bath with a friend". Its fun in summer but pretty ornery in winter. My two slender daughters and I have often bathed together. (I can imagine my less devoted friends here rolling around in mirth at the thought of this) but an article I once read written by a psychologist, said that if you bath with your adolescent offspring, all defences are let down and your child will open up and confess all !! (Bare all I suppose would be a more suitable terminology)

Unfortunately these days something adipose and unfriendly seems to have happened, and the family bath is no longer large enough !!

But I digress, back to water rationing. Probably the factor that has contributed most to us living happily ever after in Bulawayo, has been our love of our wildlife, our wide open spaces and our gardens plus our privacy behind our own precious four walls.

As we cart buckets of bath water from the bath to the loo, my mind wanders back to 1993 when Bulawayo was yet again in the throes of water rationing. The City Fathers were civic minded in those days and introduced a programme hosted by yours truly, called "Bulawayo Must Live !"

A weekly slot on prime time TV was aired, where the dam levels were viewed, public conscientising was undertaken, tips on water conservation were explained and the drastic steps that needed to be taken were elaborated upon.

Many happy hours were spent wandering around Bulawayo's supply dams with my old cronies from ZBCTV - my late dear friend Rueben, and all the wonderful folk who all worked for ZBC for many years - Livingstone, Marcus, Sol, Oscar, Patrick and Amon.

Bulawayo did live of course, thanks to ample rains the next year, and then there was the usual flurry of activity to bring water from the Zambesi, build the Gwayi Shangani Dam, pipe water from Mtshabezi Dam, but, guess what, nothing happened !!! And here we are again...... washing our dirty socks in our equally dirty bath-water !!

My Blessed Mum always used to quote "I cried because I had no shoes.... and then I saw one who had no feet" ....

The Note, the Academy coffee shop, has re-opened under new management and is available for take-aways and deliveries.

THURSDAYS 11 & 18 JUNE AT 7.00 P.M. CHERNOBYL
On 26 April 1986 the Chernobyl nuclear power plant near Pripyat, Ukraine experienced a malfunction which resulted in a core explosion in Reactor 4. This highly acclaimed miniseries follows Valery Legasov, the lead scientist working to control the disaster, Boris Shcherbina, a Soviet politician representing the interests of the Soviet government during the disaster, and Ulana Khomyuk, a nuclear physicist working to uncover the truth about what really happened at Chernobyl.
'Chernobyl rivets with a creeping dread that never dissipates, dramatising a national tragedy with sterling craft and an intelligent dissection of institutional rot.' [Critics' Consensus, Rotten Tomatoes 98%]
'Chernobyl is a disaster movie, a spy movie, a horror movie, a political thriller, and a human drama, and it spins each plate expertly.' [Guardian]
'Timely, bleak, intelligent and compelling, Chernobyl is a triumph of a disaster.' [Independent]
Admission: $30.00 [free to Film members]

FRIDAY 12 JUNE AT 7.00 P.M. BEETHOVEN: QUARTET IN F MAJOR / MISSA SOLEMNIS
The Dresden Frauenkirche was totally destroyed in the Allied fire-bombing of Dresden 75 years ago on the night of 13-14 February 1945. A new church, built as closely as possible to the original 1743 plans, was consecrated in October 2005, sixty years after its predecessor's destruction. Beethoven's Missa Solemnis was performed there the following week, and what could be more apt than to present this work - especially as Dresden gave the first performances in Germany, partially in 1829, and completely in 1839. It will be preceded by Leonard Bernstein's arrangement for full string orchestra of Beethoven s last quartet.
The performance [Missa Solemnis] is as moving as it is expert. Fabio Luisi leads the proceedings with a sense for capturing the music's ecstatic joy, its profound spirit and bounteous hope. This is surely one of Beethoven's deepest and most rewarding creations, [Classical Net]
...a beautiful performance that captures the feel, beauty and dramatic power of the Missa Solemnis throughout. [MusicWeb International]
(Bernstein/Quartet) Extraordinary music-making of a rare depth and brilliance. [Amazon]
Admission: $30.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

FRIDAY 19 JUNE AT 7.00 P.M. MISS SAIGON
'Miss Saigon' was inspired by Puccini's 'Madame Butterfly', and similarly tells the tragic tale of a doomed romance involving an Asian woman abandoned by her American lover. In this case, the setting is 1970s Saigon during the Vietnam War, and Madame Butterfly's story of marriage between an American lieutenant and a geisha is replaced by a romance between a United States Marine and a seventeen-year-old South Vietnamese bar-girl. It ran for ten years in London, closing after 4,092 performances in October 1999, and was revived for its 25th anniversary in 2014 for a further 750 performances. This performance is the actual 25th anniversary gala with a special finale which also features appearances by the original cast including Jonathan Pryce and Lea Salonga.
The greatest musical of all time and the best live film of a stage show that I've seen. [Daily Mail]
The most thrilling, soaring and emotionally stirring musical with magnificent performances. [Telegraph]
Miss Saigon has always been ground-breaking in many ways. Now it is no exaggeration to say that it has created a new medium - a surprising and exceptional hybrid of theatre and cinema. [London Theatre]
Admission: $30.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

3) Congratulations

4) Condolences/In Memoriam/Wreath Funds

Elizabeth Anne Beets, wife of Tinker Beets - Mother of Gary and Lesley - Grandmother to Marc, Sarah and Tait was taken to her final earthly sleep on Friday 5th June 2020 after a long and brave battle with cancer. Our world has changed forever. We have lost a treasured and much loved matriarch who touched and changed many lives for the better. A gracious and wise lady, tender, caring and always conscious of the needs of others. The void she leaves can only be filled with good memories and happy times. Our love for you will never end.

BILLIE LOXTON

It is with great sadness that we inform anyone in Bulawayo and Matabeleland generally, of the passing away of Billy Loxton.
He died on 12th April, aged 85 in hospital in Windsor, UK, succumbing ultimately to cancer, which he had been dealing with, bravely, for several years.
He was a long term resident of Bulawayo, emigrating with his family, finally, to the UK, about 10 years ago.
He was in the Rhodesian Customs Department for many years, and in latter years, worked for Supersonic, in Bulawayo.

He leaves behind a loving family, Wife - Irene (they were Married for 60 years), Daughter Corinne, Son Gerald and Grandson Paul, plus many nieces and nephews, scattered as we have all become.

We will miss his humour and long, informative telephone conversations.

With love and condolences to all,

John and Hazel Blair (nee Loxton), resident in Johannesburg.

Obituary Norman Harbach Simister (1st December 1924 - 16th May 2020)

Norman Simister died peacefully in England on the night of Saturday 16th May 2020.

He came to the then Rhodesia after seeing service in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. For many years Norman ran the town branch of C H Naake where his knowledge of art and picture framing was well appreciated. As a director of the company he assisted in establishing the Zambian when a branch of the company.

The Church of the Ascension played an important part in Norman's life and he served with distinction both as a councillor and as Churchwarden.

Norman was an active and very senior Freemason and for many years was involved with the Masonic Homes in Bulawayo where his hands on approach and visits to the residents was appreciated. His knowledge of the Order was encyclopedic and over the years presented many well researched papers to the Lodge.

As an ex serviceman Norman served on the Relief Committee of the Legion and when he returned to England in May 2012 it was in the Legion Retirement Village at Aylesford that he established himself. Retirement was a happy time for Norman, who in the company of various friends visited interesting places in England and abroad. Friends in Zimbabwe were not forgotten and each year delightful calendars came from Norman and telephone calls and e mails kept us in tough.

Norman's wife Sue predeceased him by a number of years, but he found solace in his many friends both in Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom.

He will be missed and remembered with affection.

H. F. Day
