WHO'S FOOLING WHO ?
Most people look forward to Christmas, when all the children are home,
there are Christmas trees and gifts.
Some folk look forward to birthdays, or perhaps wedding anniversaries.
Me ?
I look forward to the First of April !!
They say small things amuse small minds, well, that much I must admit
is true, I revel in April Fools jokes. I love them, I spend all year
planning pranks from the second of April onwards.
Needless to say my poor family hates April Fools Day with as much
passion as I love it. They of course are usually the butt of my jokes
and they all start getting nervous round about now.....
What on earth is mother going to do this year they groan....
No one, friends and relatives alike, comes to visit us on April the
First. No one ever asks for a cup of tea on the First of April, having
been through the old "enos fruit salts in the sugar basin routine".
He Who Must Be Obeyed is especially wary on April The First, he always
inspects the loo very carefully having been subjected to the old "cling
wrap over the toilet bowl" joke.
She Who Must Run writes big notes on her diary on the First of April,
preparing herself for her idiotic Mum's pranks. She answers the phone
with great caution and would not believe anyone, talk to anyone, listen
to anyone who even remotely is connected with her misguided mother.
She Who Must Sing has inherited her mothers rather perverted sense of
humour and has all the makings of a prankster which fills me will
motherly pride !!
Even He Who Must Be Obeyed's office staff are wary on this fun filled
day, no one takes calls from the tax man, the blood transfusion centre,
the sales tax office or the Labour Relations Office or the C.I.O. on
this day....
If you see a car driving around with an egg box balancing precariously
on the roof on April The First, you can be sure there is a blond fool
with a corny sense of humour behind the wheel.
My Piece De Resistance Prank was of course, the year He Who Must Be
Obeyed had the temerity to complain about my housekeeping once, when I
served him a stale cheese roll for lunch one day.
The cheek of it, I always manage to sandwich his luncheon requirements
in successfully between tennis and bridge every day.
So determined to effect revenge on him, I placed an advert in the
Chronicle for a housekeeper with special qualities.
"Busy executive requires housekeeper to manage busy household, must be
able to cater for the demands of an energetic and fiery teenage
daughter, must be compatible with the needs of a surly, grumpy parrot
with a beak like a hawk. Must be able to cook gourmet meals for a party
of 35 with an hours notice" You know, the average day in the life of
the average Zimbabwe executive..." and of course I put his cell phone
number in the advert.
The first call came at 5.45 a.m...... and they came.... and they
came... all day long until he changed his cell phone number..... but...
he got the last laugh.
To my absolute chagrin he came home with a beautiful 18 year old blond
in tow.... and said she had applied for the job...... and undoubtedly
had the best qualifications.........
Sniff.....
Does anyone know of any April Fools jokes for me for this year that
will not backfire on me ?

BIRDS OF A FEATHER
BY WALLY LACEY
After Margaret and Rick's Valentine expedition to How mine to see the
Swallows, Margaret and I discussed doing a regular "birding" feature on
Morning Mirror. Thanks Margaret, for the accolade, but I don't for one
minute profess to be an expert (fundi) just an interested birder.
We decided after a short discussion to feature birds which can be found
in and around gardens throughout Zim. I will try to provide simple
guidelines to enable the novice to identify different species, and also
provide a list of suitable trees and shrubs which can be grown to
encourage birds to visit and possibly establish themselves in the
garden. Many bird species eat plants, plant parts, seeds, fruit or
leaves. Several species feed on nectar and various birds feed on the
insects which are eating your prized plants. Various feeding methods
can be implemented to attract birds to your garden. Remember if you
provide food, don't forget the water, and if you are attracting birds
to your garden, be careful with the insecticides you spray around.
There are a large number of insect and seed eating birds that will
frequent your garden, and toxic pesticides will kill them. Therefore
THINK BEFORE YOU SPRAY. I will include various natural pesticides
which can be used with great success around your gardens. Remember
too, to keep any pesticides, either natural or synthetic well out of
reach of children and pets. Various artificial nest sites can also be
introduced to make birds feel "at home". Remember that each species
has it's own specific nesting requirement and will build or inhabit an
artificial nest which is suitable.
The first bird we are going to look at is the BLACK EYED BULBUL.
(PYCNONOTUS BARBATUS). Roberts No. 568
This common resident is found throughout Zimbabwe, inhabiting most
regions where there is bush and trees. Not found in evergreen forests.
Commonly called the "Toppie" this cheerful fellow will be found in
almost every garden. In my garden these are the first birds to be
heard every morning from their perches in the Acacia tree outside my
bedroom window. Listen carefully and you will hear them saying "Wake
up, Gregory"! and a much repeated "Chit, chit, chit." They will gather
in the garden and call loudly, discussing the days happenings, before
going to roost and they will normally be the first to sound the alarm
when a cat, snake, mongoose or owl appears.
The bulbul feeds on a variety of food, including flowers or parts of
flowers, fruit and insects. The insects are caught on the ground or by
hawking (caught in the air on the wing). Fruit is normally eaten on
the tree or plant, and larger fruits, are picked into whilst berries
are swallowed whole. Feeding tables are excellent for these birds, and
they will feed readily from them. They will eat a variety of food from
these tables, including overripe fruit.
What does he look like:
Smallish, about 20-22cm long, with a black, slightly crested head.
Dark eye, with no eye wattle (bare fleshy area around the eye).
Greyish brown back and Dark Brown breast with very distinctive yellow
vent (under the tail). Bill, legs and feet are black.
A NATURAL INSECTICIDE/PESTICIDE
PAW PAW LEAVES: You will need about 1kg of fresh Paw Paw leaves.
Crumble them up and soak them for about 3 hours in 10 litres of water,
to which 2 tablespoons of paraffin have been added. (Let me know you
get the paraffin). Filter off after 3 hours and use on all your plants
for a large variety of pests.
FEEDING BIRDS IN YOUR GARDEN
A surprising variety of foodstuffs can be put out in feeding trays,
platforms and feeding sites to attract birds. The bigger the range of
food, the bigger the variety of birds that will be attracted. All of
your kitchen scraps and left-overs can be used on your feeding sites,
including cereal, stale bread, cake, biscuits, pet food, cooked rice,
bacon and boiled egg, to name but a few. Try to provide separate sites
for the fruit eaters and seed-eaters. Bone meal from your butcher's
saw will attract many insect eaters, but place this on a well elevated
table to avoid your cat or dog joining in. Maggots may appear during
the hot weather, but this is an added bonus to your feeding table.
A point to note is that whatever feeding method you introduce to your
garden, make sure that you contrive to keep the site well stocked. The
birds will become reliant on this artificial food supply, and if it is
discontinued the birds could possible die. If you have to go away for
an extended period, ensure that someone is available to keep your
feeding sites well stocked.
BIRD FACT:- The most aerial land bird is the common Swift (APUS APUS),
which remains airborne for 2-3 years, during which time it sleeps,
drinks, eats and even mates on the wing.
Hope you have many delightful hours "birding".
Until next time

CHIPANGALI'S CARNIVORES ARE HUNGRY
We are having trouble finding meat for our carnivore population here at
Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage. Whilst meat donations are preferable,
we can also contribute a little financially if absolutely necessary.
However, we simply cannot find anyone with any meat these days, whether
at a cost or as a donation. I was wondering if you know of anyone (for
example: farmers, butchers, abattoirs, feed lots, game ranches, safari
companies) who might be able to help us on a day to day or weekly
basis.
The kind of meat we are looking for is donkey, cattle, goat, sheep,
horse, ostrich, all other game (impala, kudu, etc), elephant, etc.
Pork, being particularly fatty, does not agree with our animals'
constitution so this is not sought. Pet mince is also suitable,
both before & after its sell-by date.
This meat could come, for example, by way of livestock dying through
natural causes or being slaughtered (no anthrax or other diseases of
course please), culling, problem animals being destroyed by farmers,
condemned meat (ie meat that has gone past its sell-by date for human
consumption) which could be through your local butcher or supermarket.
Any amount of meat will be gratefully received as we have many small
carnivores & birds of prey, as well as the very large.
I should be most grateful for any help or contacts you are able to give
us at this time.
Many thanks once again for all your support further to our Dark Clouds
email. The response worldwide has been phenomenal & all here at
Chipangali are overwhelmed with emotion. Thank you so much for your
time.

Dear Animal Lover
I cannot thank you enough for your very quick response to our Dark
Clouds email. We have been absolutely overwhelmed with such wonderful
gestures from all over the world, many from right here in Zimbabwe,
which is just fantastic. Many of our orphans are being
adopted, generous donations are being sent to us, people are raising
money for us in many interesting personal endeavours, whilst others are
offering to give us building materials to assist with desperately
needed renovations.
This great response has of course meant that I am currently tied to the
desk answering everyone individually, which really is such a pleasure,
but takes time. So please do be patient as someone from Chipangali
will be replying to you on a more personal level within the next few
days. Your enthusiasm is so very much appreciated.
Even at this very early stage, it does seem as though Chipangali
Wildlife Orphanage & all its beautiful creatures will be saved, thanks
only to the kindness of people like yourself.
Thank you so much once again & one of our team will definitely be in
touch with you again in a few days time.
With warm regards
Zoë

HOSPICE NEEDS YOUR HELP
PLEASE ASK ANY CAPETOWN RESIDENT WHO HAS EVER BEEN CONNECTED IN ANY WAY
TO BULAWAYO TO SUPPORT US AND TO FORWARD THIS ON TO ANY OTHER PERSON IN
THEIR E-MAIL ADDRESS BOOK TOO.
On April 10th a team of volunteer runners from Bulawayo will be running
the 2 Oceans race on our behalf in an effort to raise money to replace
two of the Hospice cars which are becoming increasingly unroadworthy.
These amazing people have already begun getting sponsorship this end
but what we need now is to boost the Cape Town end too if we are to
achieve our target.
Thanks to Sue Kaufman and Tony and Merle Weissenbacher ( of Brookes
fame) who now run the Peace River Trading Store at Greenpoint, we have
begun to ask the many people now living in the Cape who either grew up
here, have relatives and friends still living here or simply want to
help our cause....so many people do express through prayer and messages
their continuing support of our battle to keep going....to either give
a donation or sponsor one of the runners participating.
The names of the runners are ; Charlie Trollope, Pete Tipler, Sean Day,
Andre Zietsman, Trev Thompson, Ann Walder,Sharon Stead, Phil Stead,
Cedric Wilder, Kieron Walsh, Lori Reynolds, Cedric Van Der Horne,
Bridget from Gweru and Cliff Fourie.
So what can you do?
Ask your Cape Town e-mail friend to contact
Sue Kaufman 4397238 and either offer to help with the organisation or
sponsorship; and also ,of course, go along to the race and give our
guys and gals a big cheer. They will be wearing Hospice blue T shirts
with our logo at the commencement of the race. And of course they can
pass this message on to any other Bulawayo sympathisers living in Cape
Town too.
18 months ago it was costing us about $250 000 max. per month to keep 4
nurses on the road, supply the drugs, run training sessions and etc.
And this amount was raised from the generosity of the people in
Bulawayo themselves with Christmas card recycling, bridge drives, cake
sales and so forth. This month our costs rose to $ 6.2 million per
month to maintain the same standards the public have the right to
expect. And you must remember that we serve all of the community...the
young as well as the old, all creeds, all races; this is truly an all
encompassing, all caring organisation. But we Bulawayo people are all
stretched to our limits now, coping with our own economic hardships as
well as trying to shore up all the other charities which so desperately
need help.
So if you have happy memories of the sunny carefree days you spent
growing up in this still beautiful city and you want to join us in our
ongoing fight to show the rest of Africa that we still truly care for
each other, then please assist us in any way that you can.
Thank you and May God Bless you all.
Jeannie Pritchard
Chairperson, Bulawayo Island Hospice.

Is there anyone moving to South Africa who could accommodate a piano
among their goods and chattels? Obviously we would pay all costs
involved. I'm hoping for several responses as there are actually two
pianos I need to move! Please contact Carole Johnstone at 244155 or

NEWS FROM ABROAD
Dear Raylene
You asked if there was anyone in Harare who would be able to care for
your Ouma. We as a church have a wonderful Caring Team who visit the
elderly every week, we also run a Senior Citizens Coffee Club once a
month as well as a programme called Homemakers. Our Caring Team are
also in a position to help purchase groceries etc if needed. The team
also help with medical needs as well.
We have a bank account in the UK where money could be deposited or you
could just send us money and we will change it through our bank. No
matter what route you use we will only use the funds according to your
instructions.
Please can you give me the details of how to get hold of your Ouma and
how we can introduce ourselves. Our Caring Team members are Onia
Potter, Jackie Robinson, Carole Dickinson and Beryl Smith.
God bless
Gary Cross

"Ghost Rowers of the Atlantic" as the Overseas Papers called them
Brett Sparrow and Scott Wonenberg reached their destination in Barbados
on the 9th March after been on the water for 47 days. If they were in
the race they would have won as the winners took 48 days. A very good
effort on their part, they certainly received a lot of publicity for
themselves and Zimbabwe.
If anyone would like the complete and amazing story of these two
incredible young men, and photos, please e mail me at

A number of people have expressed concern over a story which has been
circulating about children abandoned at the airport by parents leaving
the country. Can anyone confirm these incidents ?

I left Bulawayo in 1984 after working there for 2 years. I was told
when I was there that once it is in your blood it will always be there
but I never believed that. I DO NOW !
Unfortunately I lost touch with the real good friends I made while I
was there. Do you think you could help? I've tried everything. If you
need anymore information then please e mail me and i will give you
anything you need to know. I would be eternally grateful for any help
you could give.
Thanks
