Canopy Caperings

Its my safe haven!! Not exactly bullet proof but most comforting to hide inside.

My Grandson loves it too, its his fort, his castle, his impenetrable refuge from the monsters under the bed!

It took a lot of manufacturing, or rather, concocting!! Especially with my blond brain. Almost a whole roll of fabric, heavy linen for the bottom, five sturdy hooks, velcro and aching shoulders. The trick was to get the fan inside so we could enjoy the breeze. It looked so simple in those fancy safari lodges.

But trust me, mine was an engineering feat of mammoth proportions!!

My Mosquito Net, My Princess Bed, My Haven from those annoying little biting, buzzing, blighters......

Fortunately our ceiling is Oregon Pine, so once I had formulated a plan in my mind, it took some designing!! The worst part was balancing the table on top of the bed and then balancing the stool on top of the table.!! Possibly a little precarious for a granny but it worked!!

That family bed of ours is immovable, its been there for forty years and with the weight of HeeHoo and I, several kids, two Great Danes, a Toy Pom, a Jack Russell and a melee of cats, it has found its final resting place deep in the carpet pile!!

Hence the necessity for the precarious man-made ladder!!

Sewing voluminous meters of netting was a mammoth task, the Little Black Cat insisted on nesting on every available space!! I used almost a bolt of netting fabric plus many meters of crisp white cotton as ballast for the bottom of the net. I had to factor in a great deal of durability as HeeHoo tends to fight with mosquito nets!! He is of the Ilk that considers nets 'sissy' and 'Claustrophobic' and 'stifling' !! Meanwhile in Bulawayo these days the mosquitoes are becoming legendary.

Our next door neighbours have an empty pool with a foot of stagnant water in the deep end and they resist all attempts by the City Council to spray with a pesticide, (possibly in case the Council discovers they have chickens and cockerels on the property!!) I contemplated the Old Trick of soaking a tea bag in paraffin and cajoling HeeHoo to throw it over the wall into the pool with his superb cricket bowling abilities, but he refused for some reason!!

Hence the need for the mosquito net and a selection of 'Executioner' Bug Zappers for sitting on the deck!!

Of course I did not give a thought to having to wash the darn thing occasionally, but I made some modifications and we have a divine eight foot square mosquito cage, which, when not in use, can drape artfully in elegant, majestic swathes!

Move over Meghan Markle!!

THE ACADEMY AND PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO

ALL EVENTS IN THE ROBERT SIBSON HALL

THURSDAY 27 FEBRUARY AT 7.00 P.M. STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE
'Every saga has a beginning...' As is well known, the original Star Wars trilogy envisaged two further trilogies, one set before and one after the original films. Over 42 years all have finally appeared, together with a couple of stand-alone films, and all will be shown over the next two years at the Academy, beginning with 'The Phantom Menace' starring Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Jake Lloyd, and Ian McDiarmid.
'Phantom' may not be the best entry in the series, but it's the most technically accomplished, and it makes you as hungry for the next film as you've been for this one. [The Oregonian]
As each magnificently choreographed set piece unfolds in 'The Phantom Menace', there's little doubt that George Lucas knows how to create populist entertainment at its best. [Metro Times]
Admission: $20.00 [free to Film members]

FRIDAY 28 FEBRUARY AT 7.00 P.M. ROSSINI: L'ITALIANA IN ALGERI
A muezzin calls the faithful to prayer. Elvira fails to arouse Mustafa's desires while an animated ballet about an amorous camel cavorts in the picture frame above their marital bed. When her belly-dancing flops, the dejected Elvira stuffs her face with Turkish delight. This is only the overture, but it's already clear that Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier are going to have a lot of fun with 'L'Italiana in Algeri'. And why not Rossini's operatic farce is gloriously silly. Packed with zinging tunes, it's a gift to the talented cast at the Salzburg Festival, headed by the great Cecilia Bartoli.
Superstar mezzo Cecilia Bartoli beguiles her way through 'L'Italiana in Algeri'. She looks and sounds wonderful as Isabella, relishing both the languorous lines and coloratura of the role. [Opera Now]
It's as funny for the ear as it is for the eye. [BR Klassik]
Nowadays Bartoli is a consummate comedienne whose work looks especially well on film. As for her singing, one would be hard-pressed to find a better-sung Isabella in a production of this much-revived opera that's as good as any of us is ever likely to see. [Gramophone]
Admission: $20.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

SATURDAY 29 FEBRUARY PAUL HUBBARD: SILVER QUEEN INTO SILVER SKIES: 100 YEARS OF FLIGHT IN ZIMBABWE
Tea Room in ZITF Grounds 6.00 for 6.30
AN ACADEMY FUND-RAISER!
In the space of 24 hours in early March 1920 Bulawayo witnessed its first aeroplane landing, its first take-off and its first air crash! The Silver Queen flew on to the Bulawayo Racecourse on 5 March before a very large crowd, becoming the first aircraft to touch down in Southern Rhodesia. On the following morning, the plane took off just before 8.00 but the engines failed and the plane crashed in the bush within minutes. Paul Hubbard will tell the whole extraordinary story after a splendid dinner.
Prior to the dinner and talk, beginning at 3.30 p.m. there will be a vintage car procession from the Ascot Race Course to the Silver Queen Memorial on Fairbridge Way. This is open to all whether you're attending the evening event or not. Assemble at the race course entrance at the junction of Ascot Way and the Old Esigodini Road.
Bookings: Violette on 0772 851 609 Tickets: US$25.00 or local equivalent.

THURSDAY 5 MARCH AT 7.00 P.M. THE READER
When he falls ill on his way home from school, 15 year-old Michael Berg is rescued by Hanna, a woman twice his age. The two begin an unexpected and passionate affair only for Hanna suddenly and inexplicably to disappear. Eight years later, Michael, now a young law student observing Nazi war trials, meets his former lover again, under very different circumstances. Hanna is on trial for a hideous crime, and as she refuses to defend herself, Michael gradually realizes his boyhood love may be guarding a secret she considers to be more shameful than murder.
'The Reader' is a thoughtful and absorbing film, which is packed with delicately-structured twists and punctuated with truly impressive performances. [Daily Mirror]
There's something gripping about the relationship between this ill-assorted pair, and something touching about the way events beyond their control or understanding reach out to blight their lives. [Time]
Admission: $20.00 [free to Film members]

FRIDAY 6 MARCH AT 7.00 P.M. MARISS JANSONS - IN MEMORIAM
Mariss Jansons was one of the most highly regarded conductors of the era, admired and loved by audiences and orchestras alike. He died in December 2019 after suffering several years of serious heart problems. This concert was recorded in January 2018 to celebrate his 75th birthday and demonstrated the close relationship which he had developed with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra over the previous 18 years as he continued to inspire them to great artistic heights. The programme includes Stravinsky s Symphony in Three Movements, Hummel s Trumpet Concerto and Beethoven s Mass in C major. After the interval there will be excerpts from the 2012 Vienna Philharmonic New Year Concert which was conducted by Mariss Jansons.
Everything about Mariss Jansons exudes joy and sovereignty [Suddeutsche Zeitung]
Instrumental colours are bright, exact and assertive Beethoven insisted that the keynotes of his Mass were cheerfulness and gentleness, and these qualities are evident [Gramophone]
Admission: $20.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

I know she is late but I want to get in touch with her children.I know she had two children a boy and a girl, the boy's name is Mark I have forgotten the girls name or if not the grandchildren of Phyllis Kabot .

I'm now 67 years of age I need nothing from them but I have a big offer for late Phyllis Kabot in her memory because she raised school fees for me to better off my life here. I'm in better life because of her kindness to black people she did a lot for me though.

Tavern Bacchus, Harare, a restaurant very close to my heart, which was broken when Joan Botha informed me that she was selling up. I had been a regular for many years, apparently never having taken a female companion there twice as it turned out. When I did take someone there for a second time Joan's words to me were "I knew your number was up". On the 5th February 1983 I married my wife of 37 years within the restaurant, the ceremony and 50 odd guests all being organised by Joan, bless her. She shut the place for the occasion, brought in all her chefs and waiters and frankly did us proud. 50 plus people in one go, all having a choice of three starters, three mains and three puddings was no mean feat. First anniversary came round and she did the same a again for 20 odd of the original 50 odd people. And then she dropped the bombshell.
