A Piece of Nostalgia by Phil Morris 3) Congratulations 4) Condolences/In Memoriam/Wreath Funds Denis Norman 1932-2019 Denis Norman's passing has closed a chapter in the recent history of this country. His career has been well documented most especially in his book 'The Odd Man In.' He was part of a new wave of commercial farming leadership at a time when it was essential for the survival of commercial agriculture that all the old shibboleths of the Rhodesian Front were swept away. His influence on the political and agricultural life was immense during the time of his public service. His original appointment stabilized the commercial farming sector and his next great achievement was convincing the Government of the need for a pricing policy that took into account the small-scale farmers. Both Ministries he ran at different times were well run, fit for purpose and his Ministerial appointments meant that competent people ran the parastatals under his purview. He represented this country abroad wisely and well. In the meantime, his interventions of behalf of any number of potential miscarriages of justice, while unsung at the time, meant a great deal to those involved. His jovial extrovert character meant that he was well suited to lead the farming community first of all into the new era and then to shoulder the burden of Ministerial Office. His ability to pursue issues that at the time looked insurmountable was legendary. Although at times it may have been very depressing and stressful, he always gave the impression of enjoying the job. All the while his wife June was his rock and the most essential part of Team Norman. They were able to have a wonderful life together with their loving family. Capensis, the family home, was a grand venue for family celebrations and they were active and contributing members of the Norton community much loved by us all. By the time he left office in 1997 preparations were being made for the issuance of Acquisition orders by the Ministry of Lands and by November of that year a flurry of Acquisitions of Land orders were gazetted and by 2000 the land grab was under way. Denis Norman's family were not exempt and ultimately his son-in-law and daughter were forced off their farm as was his son. The end of the dream was in sight and ultimately, he and June left for England in 2002. As a man of great integrity, he made no attempt at special pleading for his family and quietly made a new life with June in England. He is greatly mourned by his many friends here and by those in the diaspora and fondly remembered by those who had the honour of working with him during the exciting and challenging years of early independence of this country. All our sympathy and love go out to June, Kathy, Diana, Deborah and Howard and their families. Jim Sinclair Past President, Commercial Farmers' Union. Condolence. With the passing of Denis Norman, we lost an incredible person who did so much for this country, both as a past CFU President and Minister in the new Government of Zimbabwe. It was therefore fitting that we asked past CFU President Jim Sinclair to prepare the above, for which we thank him sincerely for his wise words. Jim was on CFU Council when Denis was President and followed as President shortly after Denis resigned following his appointment as Minister of Agriculture. Although David Spain took over from Denis, he was tragically killed in a car accident in Mwenezi, so Jim took his place. Denis took over as Minister of Agriculture at a difficult period when the country was recovering from the effects of a bitter civil war during which farmers were often in the front line and suffered badly. So, a fair bit of Denis's time was spent reconciling the farmers and rebuilding agriculture from the ruins. Through his leadership farmers regained their confidence and the agricultural industry saw its greatest growth period in its history. He also managed to rebuild the trust between the new government and farmers during the difficult dissident period shortly after Independence. He has set an incredible example for both the older, and particularly the younger generation to follow. In his book, which Jim refers to above, it showed how he started from nothing and succeeded in setting himself up as a successful farmer and businessman. He will be missed but most certainly never forgotten. It has been encouraging to read some of the many recent condolence messages to him recently, particularly the one from President Mnangagwa, as all of them show the greatest respect which is still held of this great Zimbabwean farmer. Our most sincere condolences to his family and may his dear soul now rest in peace. Andrew Pascoe President, Commercial Farmers' Union. 5) Roses And Raspberries 6) Pets Column Pet Hilton Kennels and Cattery for the best care of your pet when going away, or when your bitch is in season.
