SPRING FEVER

It must be some sort of deep rooted primeval urge that makes one feel the need to SPRING CLEAN !!

It always happens at this time of the year in the Southern Hemisphere. Possibly it is something to do with the Jacarandas which are peeping slightly in purple shyness from some very special trees right now. Maybe it is the scent of the Syringa blossoms (a love hate battle rages within most savage breasts at this time )

Maybe it could be the bouganvilla which are stunning in the extreme this year, maybe the "yesterday Today and Tomorrow" bloom, with that exotic heady scent invades our cleanliness urges.

Or possibly the glorious perfume that exudes from the Moon-flower, whose massive trumpet flowers fall too quickly especially in the November wind

Whatever it is, I can feel it welling. Being of slightly short stature and of growing short sightedness, I seldom notice cobwebs, dust and grime. But suddenly in November, my eagle eye can spot a speck, a fleck, a mite of house dust and I am out there, spit polish and all.

Down come the curtains, out comes the feather duster, the washing machines roars all day long, the steam cleaner steams furiously, the soap powder in the shops becomes scarce and everyone thinks there will be a shortage and starts hoarding accordingly.

"Out damned spot" I shriek in rage, Mother's voice rings in my ears from up above "Cleanliness is next to Godliness now dear !!"

"All will come out in the wash" I can hear her as clear as a bell.

The Bridge Girls are sad, they are surely missing my company, but I well know that It's hard to be brilliantly skilful and attentive when you have an overwhelming desire to be clean.

The school committees are marking me as absent but I have a wonderful excuse "Soap and education are not as sudden as a massacre, but they are more deadly in the long run."

At this time of the year I worry that I might suffer from Ablutophobia - Fear of washing or bathing or possibly Amathophobia - Fear of dust.

Is there a not a hint of Bacillophobia - Fear of microbes or even a smidgen of Bacteriophobia- Fear of bacteria

Heehoo starts muttering about OCD, he sends me links on the e mail of strange blog sites the latest with the surprising title "What is Fear Of Dirt "

Each year apparently this surprisingly common phobia causes countless people needless distress. To add insult to an already distressing condition, most fear of dirt therapies take months or years and sometimes even require the patient to be exposed repeatedly to their fear.

It is however believed that not only is this totally unnecessary, it will often make the condition worse. And it is particularly cruel as fear of dirt can be eliminated with the right methods and just 24 hours of commitment by the phobic individual. Known by a number of names - Rupophobia and Fear of Dirt being the most common - the problem often significantly impacts the quality of life.

It can cause panic attacks and keep people apart from loved ones and business associates. Symptoms typically include shortness of breath, rapid breathing, irregular heartbeat, sweating, nausea, and overall feelings of dread, although everyone experiences fear of dirt in their own way and may have different symptoms.

And so .... until Spring is Sprung and the Grass is Riz - look for me under the feather duster or standing firmly arms akimbo, next to the washing machine.

The biggest worry is, what happens when a Southern Hemisphere lass visits the Northern Hemisphere, does the same primeval urge attack one in SPRING TIME there

I sincerely hope not cos I am totally all washed out !!

GOOD HOPE ORPHAN CARE GOOD HOPE ORPHAN CARE GOOD HOPE ORPHAN CARE

It was with great sadness that we learned of the fate of the Bulawayo Shoe Box Project this year.
But with the state of our economy, we fully understand and wish to thank all the school children,
companies and organisers who have made this project such a success in the past few years.

Betty Chiwambo and her lovely ladies from the community continue to do their very best for over
350 children in Nekta 8 and surrounding Wards to ensure the children do not starve. These are
marginalised children who live in the care of a grandparent, single parent or in families run by the
eldest sibling. Every day is an effort, every day is a struggle.

We would like to go ahead with the children's annual Christmas Party which will take place on
Saturday 14th December as even without a shoebox gift, a special meal with treats will be very
much appreciated by the children - Please won't you help
Your donation of:

Roller Meal Soya Chunks Sugar Beans
Lentils Dried Split Peas Usavi Mix
Cooking Oil Onions Tomatoes
Biscuits Corn Puffs Crisps
Cordial Juice Bar Soap Old toys and clothing

will combine to bring good cheer and a wonderful Christmas Party for 'Betty's Babies'!

We would be very happy to collect any items you may be able to contribute!

Please call or WhatsApp

'Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial
into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house
into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today,
and creates a vision for tomorrow.' - Melody Beattie

ALL EVENTS IN THE ROBERT SIBSON HALL
THE ACADEMY AND PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO

THURSDAYS 14 & 21 NOVEMBER AT 7.00 P.M. POLDARK SERIES 5
Ross throws himself into fighting for Ned's liberty as George prepares to marry Cecily and finalise his deal with Hanson and Merceron. Geoffrey Charles is forced to make a desperate plan to elope with Cecily before the wedding, and Demelza uncovers a theft at the mine.
'It's virtually impossible not to be enthralled'. [Daily Telegraph]
'The decade's most enduring TV love affair'. [The Times]
'A great series with history, intrigue, romance and drama and the wonderful scenery of Cornwall and evocative music - what is not to like Highly recommended. [Amazon]

FRIDAY 15 NOVEMBER AT 7.00 P.M. PUCCINI: TURANDOT
'Turandot' was Puccini's last opera and is, of course, the home of 'Nessun dorma', but it contains a lot more glorious music in Puccini's typical style as well as something very different in the exotic Chinese influences. This is a truly spectacular production from the Met in New York directed by Franco Zeffirelli, who died earlier this year at the age 96, conducted by James Levine with Eva Marton as Turandot and Placido Domingo as Calaf.
'This is a very fine production from that director of spectacle and splendour: the famed Franco Zeffirelli. The lead singers are magnificent both showing they are up to the considerable challenges. Placido Domingo's smooth yet powerful voice is compelling throughout.' [Amazon]
'Placido Domingo is predictably superb as Calaf, by far the best on DVD.' {mostly opera]
'The Met's over-the-top production, which is rumoured to have cost $1.5 million when this extravaganza first opened in 1987, must be seen to be believed.' [MusicalCriticism.com]
Admission: $6.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

TUESDAY 19 NOVEMBER AT 6.00 P.M. ACADEMY CONCERT, PRESENTATION AND FAREWELL TO ROSE
The Academy's usual presentation Ceremony has been brought forward and combined with the end of year concert as a farewell to Rose Green who will be leaving after an association with the Academy of more than forty years. The presentations will be kept short (no speeches!) and the concert will feature some of the Academy's best students, in several cases accompanied by Rose in what will be her swan song!
Admission free but donations gratefully accepted!

FRIDAY 22 NOVEMBER AT 7.00 P.M. BERLIOZ: LA DAMNATION DE FAUST
'The most dramatic piece that Berlioz ever wrote' is one description of 'La Damnation de Faust'. Based on Goethe s 'Faust' and first performed in 1846, it is an epic hybrid of oratorio and opera a legende dramatique according to the composer, who recognised that its greatest potential lay in firing the audience s imagination: 'Music has great wings'. he said, 'but the walls of a theatre do not allow it to spread them to the full.' This recording was made last year in the spectacular Opera Royal at Versailles.

'Francois-Xavier Roth conducts perceptively and with dramatic flair. It is evident that he has a real empathy for Berlioz s music and he paces the music flawlessly and he also knits together what can be, in lesser hands, an episodic work, presenting it as an urgent, seamless drama.' [Musicweb International]
'Almost perfection the story s very clear and undecorated... beautiful singing.' [Gramophone]
It will be understood that all these exemplary performances would be nothing without the ultra-Berliozian direction of Francois-Xavier Roth: constantly inspired, nervous, feverish without being agitated, concentrated, sure of it too, mastering each effect. Roth is a great Berliozian, whose vision, take the bets, would have delighted Hector himself. [ResMusica]
Admission: $6.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

3) Congratulations

4) Condolences/In Memoriam/Wreath Funds

Malcolm King born: 20 December, 1939 - died - 13 November, 2019.

Sadly our beloved brother/uncle Malcolm King, formerly of Bulawayo, passed on in Cape Town on Wednesday, 13th 2019 after a short battle with Parkinsons and dementia. Malcolm was the son of Dr. Norman and Helen King.

Malcolm, also known as Mono, Mdala, Jabulani and various other nicknames, was a well known figure in Bulawayo. He ran Katshana Transport from his Bulawayo offices, which serviced passengers traveling from Bulawayo to Johannesburg and other destinations in South Africa. He was Chairman of the Matabeleland Highlanders Football Club in 1984 and was deeply involved in the local community. A fluent Ndebele speaker, he was well known throughout southern Africa, and some of my fondest memories of being with him are -when in restaurants in Joburg or Cape Town - the whole kitchen and wait staff.. (almost always all hailing fro Bulawayo).. would turn out to see him, pay respects and swap a little banter.

Malcolm leaves behind his sisters Valerie and Janet, and his twin brother, Robert.

A very informal memorial service is being arranged for mid December in Cape Town and dates will be advised for those interested. Anyone needing further details please don't hesitate to email me on will@khashana.com.

We thank everyone for the messages of condolence and memories already received.

Will Taylor

Condolences for Mr Neil Todd :

He taught for many years at PLUMTREE before moving to the Headship of Falcon I think end of first term in 1984.
Gwen-my wyfe was a direct contemporary of both Neil, and Sue, through Primary & Chaplain, and a friend & residential neighbour in Gwelo/ru until paths separated for College and careers, etc.
An OP myself, I happened to attend his farewell presentation at Plumtree, at which there were few dry eyes & mine not one of them !
The Girls College mention has arisen from Neil's activities in the Private Schools Association after his retirement from Falcon & active teaching.
He did a sterling job in both Schools and will be remembered with gratitude by all of us who knew and worked with him.
