THE BULAWAYO FLOWER SELLERS

The Bulawayo Flower sellers outside the City Hall in Bulawayo have been an institution for as long as I have been alive and trust me that is an extremely long time !!

A favourite and enchanting tourist trap featured in every tourist publication on Bulawayo since the inception of the city.

There is Ma Moyo with her colourful buckets of baby's breath and carnations brought in fresh each day from the Martins' farm - Ponderosa which is now of course no more at any rate....

And if Colin and Judy did not have a wedding on that week, you could sometimes get a precious bunch of Saint Joseph's' Lilies from Ma Moyo which was a real treat for the home.

There is old Willie Ndlovu with his half dead roses and the agapanthas he "borrows' on his way to work every morning !!

There are the predictable ready made posies and wreaths which were so popular for weddings, funerals and just to say "I love you" or just to say "I loved Life". Some still made of gaudy coloured crepe paper but they last a lot longer on the sad little gravestones.

On the northern end of the City Hall mall are the curio sellers selling everything and anything in wood, wire or soapstone.

There is that awful rapscallion Solomon who would add four zeros onto the price of a wooden hippo the minute he heard an American accent, but would reduce it quickly when you spoke even a word of Ndebele !!

Here are the worm sellers who could discuss most knowledgeably the merits and de merits of the thin red worms as opposed to the fat brown earthworms in the art of catching tiger or bream at Kariba (in spite of the fact that they had never gone further than Nyamandhlovu in their lives} !!

Here are the placid ladies who sit day in and day out, legs stretched ramrod straight in front of them, crocheting and knitting doilies and tablecloths festooned with pretty beads.

Still there remember are those little covers weighed down with blue, red or green beads, that were used to cover the milk and the sugar bowls back in the days when gentility was paramount

Still there are the touts and the tricksters, an integral part of the tableau of every society the world over, who would rush up to you and drag you over to someone else's stall where they would expertly talk you into believing that this particular hand- carved bowl was exactly the one you needed to send to Aunty Clara in New Zealand, and then he would fix his own inflated price which included his cut of the takings!

The wire toy sellers are there too. Such ingenuity was displayed by these dextrous young men, who could fashion anything out of wire "borrowed " from someone's farm fence or from the telephone wires leading to someone's property !!

Here are the livelihoods of countless talented sculptors, artists, floral artists, musicians, and entrepreneurs melded into a colourful and delightful mix of cultures and designs. The Bulawayo Flower Seller market outside the beautiful Bulawayo City Hall.

Possibly the oldest surviving building in modern Bulawayo is Dawson's Store, part of the historical centre that became The Grange Hotel. Built in the 1880s, it was a trading post run by James Dawson in the 'Whiteman's Town' next to King Lobengula's royal capital of Bulawayo [eMahlabathini]. During the Anglo-Ndebele War of 1893 most Europeans took flight in the immediate months prior to the conflict. However, two men remained, staunch friends of the King - William Filmer Usher and James Fairbairn. With the destruction of the Ndebele capital as British South Africa Company forces advanced, these two men took refuge on the roof of Dawson's store, the only substantial brick building remaining. Protected by the word of the King, there they remained until the invading forces arrived. This building, although modified in the last 126 years, remains and we will be entertained by several talks on the events and personalities involved in this and later history of this site and the SauersTown suburb.
Directions:-. The Grange - northern end of Kenilworth Road, Sauers Town. For those who don't know where this is take the Victoria Falls Road, turn right at the old Portuguese Club onto Jacaranda Avenue. Cross the stream and take the second road to the left [Kenilworth]. Proceed straight to the very end where there is a gate leading off to the left with a sign The Grange.
Bring chairs and refreshments. Join the Friends and Support the museum. All welcome.

Sullivan rejects Gilbert's next idea as 'topsy-turvy' and unbelievable, and although Gilbert tries to accommodate him, they cannot agree. Friday 12 April at 7.00 p.m. Gilbert & Sullivan: The Mikado
After Topsy-Turvy what else but The Mikado ! Perhaps the best-loved of all the G&S operas, The Mikado or The Town of Titipu opened in March 1885 and ran for 672 performances, which was one of the longest runs of any theatre piece up to that time. Before the end of 1885, it was estimated that, in Europe and America, at least 150 companies were producing the opera and it remains the most frequently performed of the G&S canon. Setting the opera in Japan, an exotic locale far away from Britain, allowed Gilbert to satirise British politics and institutions more freely by disguising them as Japanese - and his pen was rarely more sharply pointed than here.
This video is part of a series produced originally for BBC.TV in the early eighties, and top stars from the world of opera and comedy were recruited for the leading roles as well as imported 'guests' designed to increase marketability in the States - here William Conrad (whom some may recall as the detective Cannon!) is the Mikado with Kate Flowers as Yum-Yum and Clive Revill Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner. Wednesday 20 March at 7.00 p.m. Gorecki: The Symphony of Sorrowful Songs /Europakonzert 2013 from Prague Castle
Gorecki's Symphony of Sorrowful Songs was a musical sensation: the 1992 first recording reached the No.1 spot in the classical album list - and, quite incredibly, reached No.6 in the popular album chart as well. Gorecki was initially inspired by a message scratched on the wall of a Gestapo prison and each of the symphony's three movements sets a 'sorrowful song'. The first is a 15th-century Polish lament of Mary, mother of Jesus, at the foot of the Cross, the second a message written on the wall of a Gestapo cell during World War II, and the third a Silesian folk song of a mother searching for her son killed by the Germans.
In the film by Tony Palmer, widely acknowledged as his masterpiece, a performance of the symphony is intercut with an interview with the composer, newsreels of famine and war and specially-shot sequences of the composer's visit to Auschwitz.
