Thinking of leaving, well think again.....

Erma Brombec once said "my second favourite household chore is ironing. My first being, hitting my head on the top bunk bed until I faint".

Well Emma my dear having spent the last two years cooking, cleaning and ironing, I know exactly how you feel !!

If I ever ever feel like leaving Zimbabwe and heading for "greener pastures" please someone remind me of exactly what Emma Brombeck said..... Because having been there, done that.

Trust me, there's no place like home....

There are nine golden rules for people who think leaving Zimbabwe will be a cinch.

Rule number one... be quite sure that you are wealthy enough to be able to buy lots of pairs of track shoes... cos when they get dirty you need to be able to throw them away...

Its as easy as that. Having dug the garden with favourite brother in law and he who must be obeyed, in that hideous texas clay that could be marketed as a bonding agent to keep NASA in glue, I have learnt that there is only one good place for dirty track shoes... in the trash can.

Rule number two.... it doesn't matter how magical the feel of percale sheets is... don't touch them with a barge pole.....

Ironing percale sheets is definitely like banging your head against the top bunk.... there is only one place for them, as nice as they feel against your skin...and thats in the trash can along with the track shoes.... you must make sure you buy a high poly cotton content that goes in the tumble dryer looking like new and comes out of the tumble dryer looking like new. Crease-free and fragrant...

Rule number two A... Apologise to your precious gogo every day for the years of not appreciating her magnificent sheet ironing skills.

Rule number three... no dogs !!

Oh no... Animal lovers trust me... Unless there is a new invention in the precariously near future, which will magic away doggie doo doo instantly before it hits the ground... no dogs.... big ones small ones... cats too... there is no pooper scooper in the world big enough for my Victoria Jane (who is a fabulous giant great dane and I love her dearly... but no dogs unless you stay in Zimbabwe). And if you do have a very weak moment and buy a dog, make sure it is a short haired doggie!!

Rule number four....... throw out all blankets instantly if you have to make your own bed.... Get a duvet, comforter, eiderdown, call it what you will. Preferably an all-in-one-comforter because if you buy a duvet with a duvet cover, if its a king size bed, be prepared to have to climb inside the duvet cover daily to get it nice and straight.....

Rule number five.... Never ever make a date with a workman.. plumber, electrician, builder... They all lie... they never come on time... sometimes they never come at all..... make sure that you are going to be at home for the entire week otherwise you will get majorly irritated waiting for them. If they say they will be there in an hour... take no notice..... they are inveterate liars... do not trust them or your faith in humanity will be destroyed forever.

Rule number six.... the dreaded loo... never admit responsibility for cleaning the loo...

And then make sure you have every conceivable appliance ever invented to keep the loo clean without ever having to do it yourself... there are amazing gizmos, gadgets, air fresheners, automatic loo cleaners... that will do the job for you... to a certain extent I am afraid but not the whole tootie unfortunately....

If you are thinking of going to live anywhere else in the world... start collecting plastic bags now.... they don't have a plethora of them any more like we do... gone green... I believe... so you need to take your zim plastic bags with you... one thing we have plenty of in this country it would appear.

Rule number seven.... cooking is important... but you gotta clean up afterwards... so out must go your linen tableclothes, your zebra place mats, your beautifully embroidered napkins.... get rid of your crystal... trash your best china..... its either your sanity or your wonderful elegant lifestyle that must be salvaged... its paper plates from now on.....

Ironing ... if it don't tumble dry... trash it now..... except for his shirts..... I suppose its the least you can do...

Rule number eight... Dump those hankies and break him gently into 'man' tissues. Hey have divine man tissues in R.S.A. but I have yet to find a undestroyable tissue in the USA!!

Rule nine.. remember to say thank you to gogo for all those beautifully ironed shirts and as for all those years of dedicated and loyal service.

Rule for men - don't ever leave our country unless you can afford to buy a whole container of vellies !!

Favourite brother in law always asks for vellies when we visit, the original vellie, the plain ordinary old khaki coloured vellie with the cream crepe sole. But... they will never look the same as they do here at home because there is no mealie meal with which to clean them anywhere else.

Our visitors are always bowled over when their vellies and track shoes arrive back in their bedrooms after the royal Charlie or Joyce treatment. First of all a brisk scrub with a wire brush, secondly the cheerful Charlie soap suds treatment, then the shoes are stuffed tight with newspaper (and we are very choosy about the newspapers we use believe me !!).

The final touch is a liberal sprinkling of first grade roller meal, buffed and rubbed firmly into the hide, out in the Zimbabwe sun for a couple of hours... a good brushing accompanied by a fine whistled rendition of Kosi sikelel Africa..... and hey presto - brand spanking news vellies - as only Charlie knew how.

Watchdog !!

THE ACADEMY AND PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO
ALL EVENTS IN THE ROBERT SIBSON HALL
Thursday 23 August at 7.00 p.m. West Side Story
Leonard Bernstein, perhaps the most remarkable musician of the 20th century, was born a hundred years ago on 25 August 1918. 'West Side Story' is undoubtedly the best known of all his works and one of the best known musicals of all time, the winner of countless awards as both a stage show and a film, the latter winning ten Oscars, including Best Picture, a record never equalled by a musical and rarely surpassed by any film. It really doesn't need any reviews, but in case you're wondering how well it stands up nearly sixty years later...
'How does the film stand up now Very well indeed.' [Time Out, 26 January 2006]
'"West Side Story" remains one of the best musicals of all-time. [Movie Metropolis, 29 December 2011]
'Leonard Bernstein's rich, eloquent and demanding score is still a powerful experience.' [Guardian, 19 February 2008]
'Not seen it Time you did.'. [Total Film 9 September 2011]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members]

Friday 24 August at 7.00 p.m Bernstein: Reflections / Mahler: Symphony No.1 Carriages: 9.30 p.m.
In 'Leonard Bernstein: Reflections', Bernstein discusses his Boston childhood, his musical growth at Harvard and the Curtis Institute, and the influence of great conductors like Reiner, Mitropoulos and Koussevitzky. From Carnegie Hall, scene of his debut, to the living room of his home and his private studio overlooking New York's Central Park, Reflections explores the artist's varied and colourful career. It will be followed by the First Symphony of Gustav Mahler, perhaps the composer closest to Bernstein's heart - literally so, for Bernstein asked to be buried with a copy of Mahler's Fifth lying across his heart. (The symphony will be shown in October for the anniversary of Bernstein's death on 14 October.)
'We see Bernstein reflecting on his life and music and what a charismatic talker he is - straight to camera, unprompted, measured, fluent, thought-provoking, self-deprecating and fascinating about the creative process.' [Gramophone]
This sunny, superbly played, magnificently recorded performance [of Mahler 1] captures Bernstein at his uninhibited best. [David Hurwitz]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Dinner available from 6.00 p.m. ($10.00)

Thursday 30 August at 7.00 p.m. Dangerous Liaisons
'Dangerous Liaisons' is set in pre-Revolution Paris. The Marquise de Merteuil plots revenge against her ex-lover, the Comte de Bastide, who has recently ended their relationship. To soothe her wounded pride and embarrass Bastide, she seeks to arrange the seduction and disgrace of his young virgin fiancee, Cecile de Volanges. But things don't go as planned... The performances of Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer, the cinematography of Philippe Rousselot, the costume design by James Acheson and the screenplay by Christopher Hampton all garnered critical acclaim and the film was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
'An absorbing and seductive movie.' [Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times]
'A delectably naughty experience. This sort of wit and immediacy is extraordinarily rare in a period film.' [Washington Post]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members]

Friday 31 August at 7.00 p.m. Bernstein conducts Beethoven's Ninth and Brahms' Fourth Symphonies
This performance of Beethoven's Ninth with the Vienna Philharmonic, which has not been shown before, has been called 'the finest of all his recordings of a piece he first conducted on 1 September 1952' and was recorded at the Vienna State Opera in September 1979.
'One of the great performances [Beethoven 9]... From first note to last, Bernstein is alive to every nuance in Beethoven's score.' [Classics Today]
'Here is the most convincing presentation of Brahms' symphonies that I personally have ever experienced.' [Amazon]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Dinner available from 6.00 p.m. ($10.00)

Thursdays 6, 13, 20 & 27 September at 7.00 p.m. Poldark Series 4
1796: To defend Cornwall and those he loves from an empowered George, Ross must learn to play the political game on a journey that takes him to the nation's capital. While Demelza manages the Poldark's affairs at home, Elizabeth moves to further secure her marriage but Drake struggles in resigning Morwenna to life with Osborne, and Dwight and Caroline are tested as never before.
'An incredible roller-coaster of a ride once again. Brilliant acting by all the cast as usual.' [Amazon]
'If the season keeps up the pace and the deft mix of romance, betrayal, secrets and scheming of this episode [it does!], this series of 'Poldark' has the potential to be the best since the first.' [Digital Spy]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members]

Em'seni Camp R600 Winterton 3340
Below Spioenkop Mountain on the banks of the Tugela river Contact: 036 488 9015 marketing@emsenicamp.co.za
www.emsenicamp.co.za
Our gap-year Christian Leadership programme offers the opportunity to grow in faith and learn to become a strong Christian leader while having fun, serving others and learning life skills along the journey.
The focus is to serve God in a front-line ministry capacity while putting into practice the leadership and skills that are taught at Em'seni. As a Christian leader, a team member's primary responsibility is to build relationships with people and help draw them closer to Christ, introducing them to a life like no other.
SUIS Ministry and Discipleship
These leaders will form part of the SUIS Ministry Team which will be the 'hands and feet' of our ministry into the Independent schools across South Africa as well as of the ministry of Em'seni Camp for outreach. This includes both ministering within schools and back at Em'seni when schools join us for their camps. The team members are also personally mentored by the trained SUIS staff as they go on a journey of growth and discipleship throughout the year. This involves growing in their knowledge and relationship with God as well as discovering their personal gifts, talents and dreams. All of this takes place in a loving Christian community, within the camp and in the surrounding community.
Emseni camp

BEYOND JUST A GAP YEAR.
Know that what you are doing this year is important; what young people learn at camp will affect them throughout their whole lives. You are teaching your campers not only how to make friends and how to keep them but also all the skills that go along with that: compassion, teamwork, cooperation, communication, sharing, perseverance, problem- solving, leadership, listening, taking responsibility, being accountable, decision-making, considering others, and more! Because of you, your campers will become better people. They will grow into contributing adults. They will impact and influence others in a more positive way. They will be better community members and better leaders. Because of you, the world will be different.
You make the difference to each person this year.
Above all else you must be a fun, energetic, enthusiastic person who loves, people, the outdoors and camping and wants to embrace this year and everything you can get out of it.
Qualities we are looking for in the leaders we choose for our GAP Team: 1. Strong leadership skills so people see you as a role model
2. Good communication skills
3. Sensitivity and compassion
4. Problem solving skills
5. Ability to inspire and encourage
6. People who are respectable and have integrity
7. Strong work ethic
8. Willingness and enthusiasm
9. Resilience and a positive attitude, particularly when tired or under stress
Christian camp leadership is an important role which nurtures with it many professional skills, such as communication, responsibility, tolerance, and flexibility. Every day, camp leaders learn how to solve conflicts effectively and how to adapt to the needs of individual campers, enhancing their ability to work with others.
Why take this GAP year
The experiences, character traits and skills gained during your year will be invaluable to you in the real world. So many different life skills will be learnt during this year such as:

- You develop a better understanding of self and others
- You enhance personal growth
- You master problem-solving skills
- You have a positive and significant influence on the lives of others
- You expand/develop a network of peer relations
- Learn many life skills you would never have learnt before

GAP leaders who have worked at Em'seni Camp will have been exposed to many aspects of life and having this on your CV will be a great testimony to your character.
Accommodation and life at Em'seni camp
What to expect:
This will be one of the best years of your life... live it and make the most of every opportunity, even the ones disguised as challenges.
- Shared accommodation in our loft.
- Meals will be provided during camps and an allowance given for self-catering when no guests are in camp.
- Budgeting and sharing a chores will be part of living in shared accommodation.
- Holidays and time-out will be allocated.
- Transport to and from camp must be arranged by the students and their families.
- Em'seni can collect students in Ladysmith or Winterton.
- We encourage leaders to take advantage of what Em'seni has to offer with its own outdoor activities like hiking, trail running, fishing, swimming, kayaking and cycling.
- Time is also available to study correspondence courses - and of course, just to spend more time with the Lord.
Application and Selection Process
If you are considering joining our GAP Year team, please contact me on the details below. I would also like to invite you to visit Em'seni camp to get a better idea of all that could await you next year.
Your process of applying to join the GAP Team starts with requesting our application form. We can also give you more information.
