ROY LESLIE BENNET

We met Roy and Heather Bennet in the most extraordinary fashion. The Boys engineered a fast climb up Port Pie with an ulterior motive. Pork Pie is a statement mountain in Chimanimani, shaped just like a pork pie, once at the top, one has an almost 360 degree view of the town of Chimanimani and surrounding areas. Once at the top the Boys scanned the horizon in a dedicated and diligent fashion much to the curiosity of the Girls.

Little did we know they were scanning the houses for television satellite dishes!!

It was after all the afternoon of one of the most important Rugby games between South Africa and New Zealand, how did we not guess they would be up to something devious
A satellite dish was spotted at Charleswood, the home of Roy and Heather Bennet and another was spotted at the Chimanimani Country Club.

With almost indecent haste we were shepherded, if not pushed, down Pork Pie in the direction of the Club.

As it happened Roy and Heather were there watching the game and hence introductions were made to this extraordinary couple.

Roy Leslie Bennet was an ordinary man who did extraordinary things. When the history of the struggle for democracy in Zimbabwe is written, his name will feature prominently in those accounts. He may have started out on the side of privilege, growing up as a young white man in racially segregated Rhodesia and served as a member of its coercive apparatus, but by the end, Bennett had transformed himself into a true hero of people. He had become a pillar of the democratic movement in Zimbabwe, admired and respected by his fellow citizens.

For me, one of the lessons from Bennett's life is that it matters little how you start when you end well. The challenge for all of us mortals is to learn from our past in order to become better people and to contribute as best as we can to the greater commonwealth of humanity.

Pachedu

There was a unique bond of love and respect between Bennett and the multitudes who followed him, from his farmworkers in Chimanimani to the MDC faithful. He was affectionately known as 'Pachedu' which loosely translated refers to a pact of brotherhood and togetherness. It signified the unique and very intimate relationship that existed between Bennett and his supporters. It was a deep relationship symbolised by an unwritten pact which could not be broken. He was indeed one of the most popular MDC leaders.

A white man who had an impeccable command of the local Shona language, Roy Bennett's ability and willingness to use the vernacular endeared him to many ordinary Zimbabweans. Zimbabwe emerged from colonial Rhodesia which was racially segregated. The idea of a white person speaking Shona, one of the local languages always fascinates people who do not expect them to know the language. In fact, his supreme command of the language and readiness to use it shamed many Zimbabwean elites who shun their own language to the point that they regard it as too lowly for their children to learn and speak.

Unity

For me, as symbolised in part by language and more by his work with fellow Zimbabweans in the democratic movement, Bennett reminded me of the potential that Zimbabwe holds if its multiple races and cultures could actually break the barriers that exist between them and work together. Bennett was part of a small group of white Zimbabweans who joined the democratic movement and demonstrated that whites do still have a place in Zimbabwe. There was a period after the end of the special voting quotas for white at the end of the 1980s when it seemed like white Zimbabweans had withdrawn from the arena of active politics. Much of that changed in the post-2000 era and figures like Trudy Stevenson, David Coltart, Eddie Cross, Ian Kay, Kerrie Kay and Roy Bennett became prominent and visible faces in Zimbabwean politics. The way they were accepted and the popular support they enjoyed was testament to the fact that Zimbabweans were ready to embrace good leaders, their race and past notwithstanding. This is a legacy that Bennett and his peers represent and it must continue, hopefully attracting a new crop of non-black Zimbabweans, and reminding them that it is their country too and they have a role to play.

Callous regime

The treatment of Bennett by the state demonstrated the callousness of the Mugabe regime and the extent to which the political and judicial systems were compromised. His Chimanimani farm, Charleswood Estate, was literally ransacked in acts of political recrimination. Bennett also exposed the vindictive character of the Mugabe regime. This was evident in a bizarre case in which Bennett was jailed by the Mugabe regime in a matter which should have attracted no more than a fine.

In that matter, Bennett was accused of pushing the then Minister of Justice, Patrick Chinamasa who had insulted him in parliament by making certain racist remarks. Parliament sat as a special court and in a clear case of pre-determined justice, swiftly convicted and sentenced him to a term of 15 months' imprisonment. Bennett's reaction may have been rash in the heat of the moment but his conduct certainly did not warrant 15 months' imprisonment. The entire proceedings were a sham. Even the Attorney General initially conceded that the sentence was excessive and disproportionate but this concession was withdrawn mysteriously halfway through the hearing. It was probably down to political pressure.

Bennett's attempts to challenge the decision and sentence in the Supreme Court were unsuccessful. The then Chief Justice, Godfrey Chidyausiku admitted that the 15 months' imprisonment was severe, but went on to hold that it was not grossly disproportionate to the offence. The tone of Chidyausiku's judgment made him appear like the aggrieved party. He dismissed Bennett's complaints against the racist comments made by Chinamasa saying they were 'common' and Bennett should not have been surprised or insulted by them. It was an appalling judgment which demonstrated Chidyausiku's bias in politically-related matters.

Justice Sandura provided the lone voice of reason and moderation. He pointed out that the sentence was grossly disproportionate and outrageous given that it was just a common assault. He wrote, 'In my view, no one could possibly have thought that the offence committed by Bennett, which was essentially a common assault, deserved a term of imprisonment. Any term of imprisonment imposed for such an offence would be a sentence which is so excessive as to shock or outrage contemporary standards of decency.'

These words summed up the absurdity with which Bennett had been treated by the state. But the Supreme Court failed him and in so doing, it also failed the rule of law and justice. There was no doubt that Bennett was being punished not for the common assault by for his politics. It was a clear case of abuse of power and breakdown of the rule of law. Looking back, the case also sums up the harsh treatment which Bennett endured at the hands of the Mugabe regime.

Politics of hate

Bennett also exposed the face of hate of the Mugabe regime by excluding him from the Inclusive Government. When the Inclusive Government was formed in 2009, Tsvangirai had nominated Bennett as a Deputy Minister of Agriculture. Mugabe would have none of it. Not only did he refuse to swear-in Bennett, Mugabe had him detained on charges of terrorism. The treatment of Bennett almost caused a breakdown of the Inclusive Government after Tsvangirai walked out in October 2009.

Still, Mugabe refused to relent. Bennett was cleared by the courts but Mugabe remained adamant. And so, Bennett was the Deputy Minister who never occupied office, all because Mugabe did not like him. The views of his power-sharing partner did not matter. Tsvangirai may have been the Mugabe regime's prime target, but it was Bennett whom it hated the most.

The Bennett exclusion from the Inclusive Government at the hands of an intransigent Mugabe also exposed the powerlessness of the Prime Minister and showed that the MDC was a junior partner in the Inclusive Government.
Basically, Mugabe vetoed Tsvangirai's appointment of Bennett because each party was entitled to select its own nominees to government. The fact that Mugabe refused to appoint Bennett despite him being the MDC's choice sealed any doubts as to who between the coalition partners had the lion's share of power.

Farewell Pachedu ..

Of all the people who should have seen a truly new Zimbabwe, Bennett was among the top cadres. Few people suffered more at the hands of the Mugabe regime. Sadly, the hand of fate had other plans. His death in a helicopter crash far away from his home country is truly tragic. Bennett and his wife, Heather will be deeply mourned not just by their immediate family but by the broader family of democrats in Zimbabwe and around the world. He was dedicated to the cause even though the government hated and rejected him. The rich legacy they left should be celebrated and emulated. For those of us who worked with him, it was a privilege and honour.

Go well, Pachedu! When you made vows with Heather, you both would have said till death do us part. But you have beaten death, because you have chosen to go together, hand in hand. Rest in peace, Pachedu and Heather. You ran your mile and you ran it well. The struggle will continue.

(Roy Bennett is a former Treasurer General of the MDC and a former MP in the House of Parliament in Zimbabwe. He was one of the closest allies of veteran opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai. He died together with his wife in a helicopter crash in the US on 17 January 2018)

IMAGINE BULAWAYO WITHOUT HOSPICE

Bulawayo Island Hospice is once again faced with another rising crisis and I have no option in spite of continued embarrassment, but to make yet another appeal to companies and the public at large whose generosity has and remains second to none. We are unable to give sufficient thanks for your continued support

During 2017 we were forced to draw down some 70% of our capital raised from the sale of our residential property, merely to keep up with running expenses in order to keep our doors open to fulfill our service to the community. There are insufficient funds available to replace much needed vehicles, tyre replacement etc.

Unless we are able to increase our income - and sadly the numerous projects we run is insufficient - we may well be forced to close our operations before the end of the year.

Our staff remain on reduced salaries. Our local donor base has shrunk -many Bulawayo businesses are facing closure, closed or struggling to stay afloat.

International donor aid has in most cases been diverted to assist the living.

BUT who will care for the dying

Please take time to read the following 'Imagine' from our Janice Bent and consider that you may recognize the circumstances described of family, friends or acquaintances.

If you feel you can help even in a small way, donations may be dropped off at our office at 2, George Silundika or deposited to our bank account, details of which are provided below

As ever as usual

IMAGINE

Most people will have experienced the pain of a toothache and will agree that it is one of the most unpleasant experiences. No matter what painkillers you take, the pain does not go away. It keeps you up all night, makes concentration during the day almost impossible and eating and drinking anything, unthinkable.

Now imagine if you felt that kind of pain ALL day - EVERY day.

Imagine that the pain has robbed you of your livelihood. You can no longer go out and earn a living to support your family.

Imagine that the pain has left you bed ridden and that no matter how much you wish you could get up and run away from it, you can't.

Imagine that even though there may be medication that can ease your suffering, you cannot access it.

Imagine that your loved ones sit day in and day out watching helplessly as you grow weaker and weaker unable to help and comfort you.

Imagine losing all hope and praying for the release of death.

THIS is the reality for more than 80% of our hospice patients.

Again -who will care for the dying

THE BENEFITS OF BELONGING TO THE BULAWAYO PUBLICITY ASSOCIATION

The work of the Association is to promote Bulawayo as an important tourist and investment destination and this can only be done with the support of the Bulawayo community. The more widely known Bulawayo becomes regionally and internationally, the more visitors it will attract to the benefit of all who live and work here - the benefits are far reaching like the ripples in a pond, from the tourist industry to commerce and industry.
By being a member of the Bulawayo Publicity Association, you are part of an Association that is dedicated to the promotion of the City and its potential, an Association that lobbies at all levels of local and national government for the City , and an Association that is recognized as a legitimate voice for the city of Bulawayo. This provides you, the member, with a more influential means of lobbying for change for the better of the City.

1.The Bulawayo Publicity Association is an independent, non-profit making organization which encourages more industries, residents and tourists to come to the Bulawayo area, and endeavours to increase the prestige of your city, for the benefit of all who live here.

2.The Association offers members free listing of companies (with logo's and pictures if possible) on its website www.bulawayopublicity.com This can include links to your own web-site and it is planned that the Bulawayo Publicity Association web-site will become a first point of contact and reference for the City.

3.Inclusion in the monthly newsletters (which appear on Face Book, Morning Mirror, Bulawayo Notice Board and sent to all members) of any new products or developments concerning your company.

4.The Association produces brochures on Bulawayo's tourist attractions as well as lists of accommodation, restaurants, and tour operators, art and craft outlets etc. This information is put into packs to be handed out at travel shows, visiting sports teams, to VIPs, Embassies, and at conferences.

5.The Association attends the annual travel shows in Harare and Bulawayo to promote the City. In the past when funds were available it attended travel shows in South Africa and arranged its own travel workshops. However private members of the tourist industry represent the Association at these shows. It is intended to return to this when funds permit. The Association is also represented at a number of local investment meetings.

6.The Association's is not limited to tourist matters, but it receives queries for example on where to purchase certain goods, which authority to approach, with regard to complaints, lists of estate agents, plumbing and electrical services, and so forth.

7.Representatives of the Association are invited to various functions at which they are able to make personal contact with heads of corporate, banks, and peers and thus obtain knowledge given and received for the mutual benefit of all.

FUTURE ACTIVITIES
1.To encourage Historic & Cultural educational workshops for the Hospitality industry front office staff and managers, so that they will be able to give advice to visitors and answer queries.

2.To persuade, SA Airlink and Fastjet and other low-cost airlines to make a stopover in Bulawayo en-route to and from the Falls on their flights from Johannesburg.

3.To maintain pressure on the Government of Zimbabwe to upgrade the border crossings into the country so as to reduce congestion, corruption and delays, and so enhance both the business and tourist environment.

4.To give each one of our members a free copy of our Bulawayo DVD which includes the Matopos, Hwange and The Falls and when funds permit to produce a longer version of this DVD.

All the promotional activities in which the Association is involved are very expensive and it has to rely in the main, on membership subscriptions to undertake this work. We look forward to you joining us and your participation in promoting Bulawayo.

SMILING THROUGH

(The right thing to do in Zimbabwe after 2000)
Few items on shop shelves
Hard to find a loaf of bread
Had to make do, by ourselves
Bake a healthy loaf instead
With the weekly donation of oil and meal,
Swapping recipes while in the queue,
Laughingly encouraging others to deal
With the dry red beans in a stew!
We were a resilient clan --.
When such shortages were our lot
And lucky to have a wonderful man
For Bert Bouwer grew vegetables
On the vacant plot
Near to the cottages and flats we rent
We residents, at this time of need
Were more than grateful, the quality excellent
Grown from his own, self-planted seed.
When, at last shop shelves began to fill
The prices rose at an-incredible rate,
For high inflation controlled the till
And we became billionaires -of this high inflate!
New bearer cheques were issued, with which to pay
Till the factual, dreadful final, crunch came,
To our great dismay!
A total of twenty - three zeros, from our currency removed,
And one trillion Zimdollars, became
Only one, US dollar, that proved
To be the total loss of all our investments
In Cabs, the Post Office and Savings Banks.
Carefully planned for a secure retirement.
The money, from the sale of our house
Thus frittered away,
All accounts were at nought
From that day!
Thank goodness my husband, Ken
Had not lived to see
What had happened to all our savings
In Zimbabwe!
I had to make new plans to cope,
Probably a little better off than many,

Just couldn't sit down and mope.
There were letters to write, the garden to tend
Which was of great interest, and always keen
At one time, Bulawayo's rose queen
From someone, desperate to immigrate south,
The sale of my car brought in useful Rands,
Gave me sufficient funds
To tide, me over and see me through
The difficult times all had to endure.
Because Ken was a soldier and P.O.W
In the last war,
Through the Help Network I was able to secure
British ex-army funding from the Green Howards,
Of great benefit, just once each year.
In 2008, after Ken had died,
I, in my eighties, had some time to spare,
Had to decide
What I really wanted to do
Write poetry A dream come true
Thoughts came crowding into my head
As I lay awake in bed,
Of situations, people, and my great love of nature,
The insects, mammals, reptiles, birds, trees too,
Were what I had tried to nurture
In the children I had taught at school,
A longing to know, more about their intriguing lives
Our interactions with them should not be cruel,
But understanding, and learning
Of their amazing, diverse lives,
How each adapts and survives.
I did some research
Read over, crossed out, changed to review
Their stories, I tried to put into verse,
Added personal thoughts, experiences, and drew
To illustrate a few.
I don't know who will read my poems,
But I spent many happy hours, had great fun
In writing some.
Found it therapeutic too!
They, plus the small, cottage garden,
Have kept me busy and smiling through!

Thora Hartley
