ADVERTS TO BE SUBMITTED BY MONDAYS AT 5 P.M EDITORIAL MY BEST FRIEND When my darling friend Juanita Moore died today I was reminded, amidst my tears, of the Enid Blyton book 'The Naughtiest Girl in the School'. Not that Juanita was the naughtiest, but she was undoubtedly 'The most Beautiful Girl in the School'. With long auburn curly hair, a slight wisp of freckles, creamy white skin and a wide generous mouth, she was unforgettable. Juanita Moore, later to be know on Rhodesian Television as Juanita Longhurst. We were both in Coghlan School together and then in Gladstone House at Eveline High School. Juanita was the sporty one - 'A' Team Tennis Captain, 'A' Team Hockey Captain, and I was the dullard, the back row choristor, the debating society mouse. And yet she chose ME as her friend, ME above the other sportswomen, the legendary Dawn Plenderleith, Myma Burke, Gail Brownlee Walker...I was her confidant, her buddy, her Best Friend. How well I remember laying a symbiotic claim to her beauty, shadowing her every mesmeric movement, waiting in the wings for her to be my friend. So reminiscent of Bette Midler in that wonderful film 'Wind Beneath My Wings'. Her mother was as enigmatic as she was, her father small, dynamic and charismatic. Those tumultuous red curls, always drawing unwarranted attention from the teachers, popping forth under those silly straw boaters like unruly kisses in the sunlight. Hers was the skirt always that tiny bit too short, hers was the blouse that struggled awry, stealing the limelight, hers were the ugly brown stockings that always showed hints of white flesh in unladylike places!! With a friendship that already spanned several years, our final school liaison was the Plumtree School Dance. I was dated by the Headboy Simon Haaroff and Juanita was dated by the Sports Captain Johnny Dawson!! Oh how many delicious hours were spent choosing our outfits for that most special of all dates. All the girls were kept in the Sanitorium for a modicum of safety and how many hours were spent, post dance, discussing our wonderful evening Juanita and I both went our own ways after school, but both worked for Rhodesia Televison and so we kept in touch. Our sons were born within months of each other, our daughters were born within months of each other and they ultimately went to university together! Sadly, as life does with its cruel twists, Juanita was plagued with infirmity and ill health took her life, but at the end she was surrounded by the people she loved most. Except for me, thousands of miles away, wishing I could have spent more time with my the beautiful woman who will always remain, My Best Friend. ++++ Watchdog !! SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE VOICE OF TERROR / QUATERMASS AND THE PIT ROBERT SIBSON HALL AT 7.00 P.M. 'Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror' was released 75 years ago on 18 September 1942 and 'Quatermass and the Pit' 50 years ago on 9 November 1967. 'Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror' was the first entry in the modernised versions of the Holmes stories starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. Set in World War II, Holmes and Watson must unmask a traitor in the Cabinet Office of the British government. 'As much as I was dreading time travelling Sherlock Holmes, this was surprisingly engaging and interesting and suspenseful.' [Rotten Tomatoes] 'Great wartime thriller. Brings back the days of tuna fish and grape sandwiches!' [Amazon] When a skull is found during excavation for an extension to the London Underground, the work is halted in order that a full archaeological dig can proceed. The diggers find more skulls, but also some form of tube-like shell made of a seemingly ceramic material. The Ministry of Defence believe it to be an unexploded bomb, but when they manage to break into the shell dead insect-like creatures are found. Quatermass comes to the conclusion that the object is in fact an ancient Martian spacecraft and deduces that the aliens 'Good cast, great script and suspense in fine example of what can be done on a meagre budget.' [Maltin's Movie Guide] 'Methodical in its pacing, building a level of dread with a payoff that fully justifies that atmosphere.' [Mountain Xpress] Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members] FRIDAY 10 NOVEMBER BLESSING BLED CHIMANGA ROBERT SIBSON HALL AT 6.30 P.M. Blessing Chimanga live in Bulawayo - the energy, the voice, the marimba the dance! Blessing is passionate and talented, a musician who sings and plays the drums, marimba and percussion. Booking at the Academy. Admission: $5.00 ($2.00 students) THURSDAY 16 NOVEMBER AT 7.00 P.M. FINDING NEVERLAND Finding Neverland is the story of playwright J.M.Barrie and his relationship with the family who inspired him to create Peter Pan. Barrie [Johnnie Depp] is suffering from a complete lack of inspiration after his last play has flopped when he meets the four children of the widow Sylvia Llewelyn Davies [Kate Winslett]. He makes friends with the family, Sylvia becomes his muse and her children the source of inspiration. [Peter Pan will be shown on Thursday 21 December.] 'Pure magic'. [New York Post] 'By turns uplifting and heartbreaking, Neverland is infused with a sense of soaring wonder throughout. Peter Pan's creator has been granted the treatment he so richly deserves.' [Empire] Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members] FRIDAY 17 NOVEMBER AT 7.00 P.M. ANASTASIA. The stunning Natalia Osipova dances the title role in Kenneth MacMillan's compelling exploration of identity in the turbulent wake of the Russian Revolution. Anastasia tells the story of Anna Anderson who, following the revolution and the murder of the royal family, claimed she was the surviving Grand Duchess Anastasia. Many believed her to be an impostor; others hoped she was Anastasia, a remnant of a lost world. A powerful, psychological challenge for the lead dancer, Anastasia explores one of the great historical mysteries of the 20th century, only recently solved, and the distorting mirror of memory, time and place. 'A commanding performance from Natalia Osipova, in emotion as in execution... I salute Osipova, the entire company performance, Crowley's magnificent designs.' [The Financial Times] 'A well trodden historical path, you might say, but MacMillan manages to wring our hearts as he examines the unhappy wreck of a woman who claimed to be Anastasia, the Tsar's surviving youngest daughter.' [Express] Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] ++++ 3) Congratulations ++++ 4) Condolences/In Memoriam/Wreath Funds Obituary for Celia Davies: 20th January 1915 to 18th October 2017 Written by her daughter Mary Jane Alexander: mjalexander.art@googlemail.com When Celia Davies was born on 20th January 1915, The First World War was in its infancy. She was the third youngest child of a Family of 11 children. Her parents were Abraham and Sarah Margolis. Abraham had left Lithuania by boat for Beira, Portuguese East Africa, and made his way to Bulawayo, a small town that was then in the very new country of Rhodesia. He had decided to escape the pogroms and chance his luck in a country which was as distant as possible from the horrors that Jews endured in Europe. Celia was a very bright child who was pushed through her schooling, spending a few months in one class and, as she mastered that, moved on. She thought in later life this was not a good plan as eventually she went to university at the great age of 14 years. By the time Celia needed to go for further education the family were sore pressed for funds - there were 7 children before Celia who needed money - but there was no problem as Celia won a Beit scholarship and was helped by another scholarship awarded by the headmistress of Eveline school, an amazing but frightening lady called PG - Penelope Gordon. Celia was to teach under her after she left university with her BA Degree, a bilingual certificate and her teaching certificate. When she started teaching Celia said she was six months older than the Head Girl. Celia met Bryn Davies a Welshman who was working in her brother in law's Chemist Shop. He eventually had his own Chemist in Lobengula Street. Celia had four children: Mary Jane, Gwyneth, Susan and Brynmor - all born during her so called long leaves (a term's leave every 3 years where it was assumed one needed to return to England the home country). She continued her career uninterrupted and was eventually Head of English at Eveline high school, where she produced all the school plays and edited the school magazine. Celia had to face many sorrows as well as triumphs. The most terrible being the death at the age of four of her baby Susan. After that Brynmor was born. He had Down's syndrome. Bryn's family came from Wales to live with Celia and Bryn after Garfield Davies retired as headmaster of Barry county school in 1952. Garfield embraced the new life becoming a farmer. He and Celia went to various political meetings both of them being strong supporters of equal rights both for women and for all people. Together they belonged to the Interracial Society. Celia held classes for all pupils taking A level English, mixing pupils from white schools with Africans and Indians. This was not against the law but was very progressive at that time. In addition to teaching, Celia bred dogs and cats and ran a market garden providing vegetables for a hotel in Bulawayo. She also found time to help out Bryn Davies in his chemist's shop while ferrying Mary Jane and Gwyneth to ballet lessons. In 1965 Celia was appointed the headmistress of Townsend High school. She was the first married woman ever to be appointed a head. This was testament to her unfailing effort to win rights for women and recognition by the authorities of her great integrity and leadership skills. She was a soroptimist and a member of the business and profession women. In fact she is included in a book on famous women of Rhodesia. Celia was always proud of the fact that the library at Townsend was named after her. Bryn died in July 1970 when Celia was on a visit to Cape Town. She drove through the night but was unable to reach him before his death. She never married again. After her retirement as headmistress in 1979, Celia and Brynmor arrived in England to join Mary Jane and her young family in the West Country. She settled in Tavistock. She then threw herself into the adult education department and taught A level English well into her eighties. She became an external professor for Exeter university and also taught in Dartmoor prison. In her later years in Tavistock Celia was a leading light in the U3A, again leading poetry groups and teaching. She went to book fairs and led a very active life, swimming every day. Eventually Celia decided to move to be nearer Mary Jane in Camberley. She was by this stage profoundly deaf and her beloved car had failed its MOT. She continued to write as she'd always done, follow politics and travel to her family in South Africa, Israel, America and Canada. Her last overseas visit was to Cape Town for her 101st birthday. In her last year at the age of 102 Celia set herself a variety of tests, one of which was remembering all her children and their children's children. An enormous test of memory. She never stopped being curious about life and this kept her alert and interesting to talk to until the very end. Celia Davies died in Camberley, Surrey on the 18th October 2017. She had a powerful influence on many people's lives and will be dreadfully missed. ++++ 5) ROSES AND RASPBERRIES ++++ 6) Pets Pet Hilton Kennels for the best care of your pet while you are away.
