A GOOD FRIEND OF OURS WAS OUT FROM THE U.K LAST WEEK AND DROVE WITH HER BROTHER UP TO HARARE FROM BULAWAYO. ALTHOUGH THE ROAD IS APPARENTLY NOW MUCH IMPROVED, THE TRIP WAS A NIGHTMARE AS THEY WENT THROUGH SIXTEEN ROADBLOCKS TRAVELLING UP AND EIGHTEEN ON THEIR WAY BACK. TOTAL COST FOR FINES FOR PETTY ITEMS (E.G. THE FRONT REFLECTORS ARE OLD AND WORN!!) WAS U.S.$180 FOR THE ROUND TRIP. SO THIS HIGHWAY ROBBERY CONTINUES UNABATED AND THE POLICE THUGS CAN BE LIKENED TO THE INFAMOUS HIGHWAY ROBBER DICK TURPIN WITH TWO EXCEPTIONS :- 1. HE WORE A MASK 2.HE ROBBED THE RICH TO PAY THE POOR AND THESE THIEVES ROB THE POOR TO PAY THE RICH. LITTLE WONDER THAT JUST ABOUT EVERYONE I HAVE SPOKEN TO IN SOUTH AFRICA REFUSE TO TRAVEL TO ZIMBABWE BECAUSE OF THIS. IT IS ALMOST LAUGHABLE IF IT WAS NOT SO SERIOUS. IT HAS A SERIOUS IMPACT ON THE TOURIST INDUSTRY IN ZIMBABWE AND THEY ARE ROBBING PETER TO PAY BOB, WHILST SHOOTING THEMSELVES IN THE FOOT. THE PALTRY EARNINGS FROM THIS PRACTICE WOULD BE FAR EXCEEDED BY GETTING TOURISTS BACK TO VISIT ZIMBABWE. HOPEFULLY A NEW GOVERNMENT IN ZIMBABWE NEXT YEAR WILL PUT A STOP TO THIS PRACTISE WHICH MAKES ZIMBABWE THE LAUGHING STOCK OF DEVELOPED COUNTRIES.
