MORE ON THE FLAME LILY BROOCH

I was one of the 42 000 school children who contributed to the brooch, which was presented to our present Queen (then Princess Elizabeth) at a ceremony at Government House by four senior scholars representing the various races. At this time I was at Blakiston Juniour School when there was a competition at many of the schools to choose two scholars from each, and I was lucky enough to be chosen from Blakiston, phew what an honour. The song was to be performed at a garden party in the park near what was the the most beautiful part of the park near the lily pond opposite Queen Elizabeth School. As the day drew near for the arrival of the Royal entourage the excitement grew, and I remember standing at the top of Third street as it joined North Avenue to watch the cars with the King, Queen and the two Princesses arriving from the airport. It was a terribly hot dry dusty day, and these poor ladies with their peaches and cream complexions waved to us all, but they must have been so hot. We had to remain in our places to cheer them back down again for the State Opening of Parliament, another very grand and memorable occasion.

On the day of the garden party we had to be in our places hours before the actual event, but when the Royal Party arrived the wait was so well worth it. The Queen was dressed in a full length white lace dress, and the princesses each wore long dresses with beautiful picture hats, so suitable against the hot African sun. Then the moment arrived when it was time to sing our song of welcome which had been written by a gentleman called Tedo Miles.

Oh hail our King oh hail our Queen, oh hail Princesses to,
You have come so far to see us,
Rhodesia welcomes you,
You have come by land and sea and air
To visit our Rhodesia, we hope you find her fair.

I can't remember any of the other verses.
After we had finished singing, the King and Queen came and spoke to us, and the Kind asked how many schools were represented. There was only a thin rope separating us, a far cry from the tight security today.

Another small piece of memorabilia was my darling grandmother was chosen to represent the Pioneer Society, and was presented to the King and Queen. All in all this was one of the most memorable periods in my life.

All this took place in April 1947. Princess Elizabeth was married to Phillip Mountbatten on the 20th November of the same year, and she become Queen Elizabeth II in June 1953. The Queen will, God willing celebrates her Sapphire anniversary in November of this year.

I see in your note on the making of the brooch that it was made by Eric Kilpin. This is interesting, as there were press reports at the time that the brooch had been made by Mr. Bell of Bell's jewellers in Stanley Avenue opp. HM Barbour.

I always get a warm feeling whenever I see the Flame Lily Brooch being worn, and yes it does seem to be a favourite of hers.
Margaret Evans (nee Cattrall)

Didn't know all of that but I remember the flame lily brooch. Princess Elizabeth celebrated her 21st birthday in CT in April with much acclaim. Her birthday cake was made by Wiener Bakery in Long Street, the German bakers there, and for years the picture of the beautiful cake adorned the window. Oupa was a friend of Mr Muhl the owner and he was as proud of his friend's achievement as if he had made it himself.

The Phoenix and Harare Male Voice Choirs present music from stage and screen to lift your spirits. The programme includes:
Another Op'nin', Another Show - Aquarius and Let The Sun Shine In - Riversong - Moon River - Let The River Run - If I Would Leave You - Standing On The Corner - Old Time Rock 'n Roll - Once Upon A Time - My Way - How High The Moon - Ain't Misbehavin' - Mr. Sandman - This Nearly Was Mine - Razzle Dazzle - Dream A Little Dream
Admission: $5.00 - booking at the Academy.

THURSDAY 12 OCTOBER DEATH COMES TO PEMBERLEY
ROBERT SIBSON HALL AT 7.00 P.M.
In their six years of marriage, Elizabeth and Darcy have forged a peaceful, happy life for their family at Pemberley. Elizabeth's father is a regular visitor; her sister Jane and her husband, Bingley, live nearby; the marriage prospects for Darcy's sister, Georgiana, are favourable. And preparations for their annual autumn ball are proceeding apace. But on the eve of the ball, Darcy and Elizabeth are relaxing with their guests after supper when the festivities are brought to an abrupt halt. A scream calls them to the window and a hysterical Lydia Bennet tumbles out of a carriage screaming murder. What follows is the sombre discovery of a dead man in Pemberley woods, a brother accused of murder, and the beginning of a nightmare which will threaten to engulf Pemberley and all the Darcy's hold dear. BBC's new drama based on P.D. James' follow-up to 'Pride and Prejudice'. Matthew Rhys and Anna Maxwell Martin star as Darcy and Elizabeth and other familiar faces appear, Jenna Coleman - Victoria - as the disgraced sister Lydia and Eleanor Tomlinson - Demelza - as Darcy's sister, Georgiana.

"Happily, this sumptuous BBC adaptation of crime queen PD James's murder-mystery sequel to Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice' was full of absorbing twists and turns." [The Telegraph]
"It's so much better than the previous evening's miserable Downton Abbey Christmas "special". Mainly because there is a plot to this, a keen sense of going somewhere. Not just going, but galloping there, almost out of control, like Lydia's carriage. Instead of ambling aimlessly, making it up as it goes along. I'm already excited about parts two and three." [The Guardian]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members] Supper available from 6.15 p.m.

FRIDAY 13 OCTOBER MAYA PLISETSKAYA: A TRIBUTE IN FIVE BALLETS

The DVD contains a selection of my collaborations with leading choreographers from Roland Petit to Maurice Bejart. Wonderful!' The main work in the programme is 'Carmen Suite', sepcailly written foer Plisetskaya with music arranged from Bizet by her husband, Rodion Shchedrin, and first performed fifty years ago in 1967.

"Oh my, if you love ballet, this is perfection." [ClassicalCDReview.com]

8) Bulawayo News

Dear Member

Please be aware that the telephone numbers starting with 25 now also have the extra 2 prefix, as well as the 23 and 24 numbers. The Harare code is 024 in many cases as yet and not just 04. Bulawayo's new code is 029. In fact, all the codes have been changed. These were listed in the Sunday News of 24-30 September.

Nando's in Jason Moyo Street between 8th Avenue and Leopold Takawira Avenue has re-opened. Rainbow Cinemas at Bulawayo Centre which closed last year were taken back over by Ster-Kinekor and launched with a night of entertainment and a major movie.

Beware motorists, the Bulawayo City Council is tightening its parking space monitoring mechanisms and council employees have been erecting signage stating 'paid parking bays' around the CBD. Motorists not abiding by these regulations will be penalized.

The Bulawayo Amateur Football Association will be celebrating 60 years of its Townsend and Butcher Trophy with an awards ceremony and dinner on the 7th October at the ZITF, which will be attended by delegates from football bodies all over the world. If you would like to support this dinner, contact the Chairman Mr C Mtungwazi on 0774 745 489 or email info@bafa.co.zw

The recently opened Umvutsha Park Cemetery situated 9kms from the city centre on Joshua Mnqabuko Nkomo (Main Street) Way to Sauerstown is open every day of the week except public holidays and burials. It is fenced and gated with 24 hour security, has a Wall of Rememberance and a hall which seats 150 for services and other functions. For further information email johnmakungacemetery@gmail.com

The actor Mel Gibson with his team has recently spent 4 days in Bulawayo and is expected to return. Let us hope that he finds it a suitable area for a film and then Bulawayo will be on the map!

Ascot Shopping Centre has an added attraction in the form of a Linen Shop which has become very popular as it sells high quality goods manufactured by their own factory in Bulawayo.

SANGANAI/HLANGANANI TRAVEL EXPO 28TH T0 1ST OCTOBER 2017

The Expo was held at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair Exhibition Centre and it was obvious that the exhibitors had put a lot of time and effort into the decor of their stands. The Bulawayo Publicity Association had its own stand which was made more attractive with the addition of plants and succulents loaned to it by Black Rhino Safaris. We met with a number of American, German and Australian travel agents brought to the expo by Zimbabwe Tourism Authority. Without exception they all were impressed with Bulawayo and wished they had more time to spend here. Most of the agents we saw had not been to Zimbabwe before and said that many of their clients did not even know where the country was situated in Africa. We pushed the historical/cultural aspect of Bulawayo in particular. The expo was interesting to us in that we met with many newcomers to tourism in the way of guest lodges, travel agencies and safari operators.

One of the exhibitors at the expo was Flyafrica which is based in Harare and which intends to commence its operations in mid October. The schedules include Bulawayo in their Harare - Victoria Falls route and also Harare to Johannesburg. Fastjet also exhibited but are still struggling to be allowed to include Bulawayo in their Johannesburg to Harare schedule.

We explained to the agents that we were a non-profit organisation and depended on our funding from tourism/industry and a grant from the City Council. They all felt that Zimbabwe and Bulawayo should be promoted more wide and that it was important for businesses to assist in any way they could to promote the city and its attractions.

The Association has updated and had reprinted its basic tourist brochure which tourists find useful as it has a city map on the front panel and describes all the tourist attractions available in the area. The cost of the reprint was donated by the Bulawayo Holiday Inn. The reprint published by Directory Publishers on gloss paper is most attractive.

There is no getting away from the fact that business is quiet, but
there is no rule to say that business people should stop advertising and promoting their products, so take advantage of the Bulawayo Publicity Association's offer to send information and a picture if possible to appear on its website, www.bulawayopublicity.com
and to give news of new products or developments to be incorporated on its monthly newsletter. info@bulawayopublicity.com

With summer here your swimming pool is soon going to become one of your greatest assets, but pools can also be hard work in terms of maintenance and repair. Which is why the services of an experienced, professional swimming pool expert is so essential. Mr Masuku, an ex employee of SM Pools with 25 years experience, comes highly-recommended; not only is he reliable, honest and experienced in all aspects of swimming pool repairs, maintenance and care including the changing of seals and filters and repairing cracks, but he is also extremely reasonably priced. He does regular calls to clients, gives freely of his advice, and will establish a regular maintenance programme to ensure your pool is always in peak condition. Call him on 0773934904 for enquiries or to make an appointment for him to come to your home. Posted on behalf of Mr Masuku by a very satisfied, long-term client.
