8) Bulawayo News BULAWAYO PUBLICITY ASSOCIATION Be advised that whilst the tarred roads in the Matopos are usable, the dirt roads are still muddy in areas and cars are being stuck in the mud. Please therefore, consult with National Parks (63637) or the rangers at the gate about the roads which are not usable. The entrance fee for locals is $4 and for non residents is US$15 Rob Burrett, author, guide and lecturer together with Dr Moira Fitz Patrick and Julia Dupree have recently published a booklet on the Matopos, 'The Matopos Hills' (which is a must-have booklet for anyone interested in our local heritage) which gives detailed descriptions of the early inhabitants, the flora, fauna, wildlife and rock art. Chipangali Wild Life Orphanage is 44 years old this year and over 350 000 children have visited the Orphanage in the last five years with the Epic (Environmental) Childrens' programme. Many of the smaller animals and birds are out of cages, but as they are used to the comforts of the Orphanage, come back to eat and in the case of the birds, to nest. Both dams are now full and many different birds can be seen there. At present Chipangali has 4 volunteers helping with the animals. It is worth noting that Chipangali has not increased its prices since 2009 - adults $5, children $4. Some of the restaurants that will be open over Easter holidays are Canela, opposite Fazak Hypermarket; Deja vu (250728) and 26 on Park and Fazak Hyper Restaurant which serves a very reasonable, delicious Sunday buffet lunch. Amagugu International Cultural Center, on Kezi Road, will be holding a Food Expo on Saturday, 8th April, where traditional food and beverages will be available for you to enjoy. Fresh farm produce will be on sale and at sunset there will be drumming on the rocks. Entrance is $5. There will be an Easter Egg/Bug Hunt at the Natural History Museum on Saturday 8th April, starting at 10 a.m. This is for all ages with different clues for different ages. 19) Seeking Friends I was browsing the web for news on Bulawayo, the City I was born and brought up in, and came across 'Bulawayo Balletomanes'. I found your article very interesting and the names of dancers/teachers you mentioned are all very familiar to me. The older names like Molly Stuart, my Late mom would have known. (My mom was a South African dancer in the 1930's and was examined by now the (Late) Dulcie Howes) I started dancing in 1973 at the age of 8. I started at Ceta Burt School of Ballet at the Hillside Scout Hall. I then went to Dorothy Ainscough School of dancing and was taught by Rosmary Williams and sometimes Dorothy herself. There was also a teacher there named Loraine Jaros who I remember. In 1980, I joined Judy Hardy School of Dancing and remember taking a trip to Selebi Phikwe, Botswana, to do a show - all such fun. I have fond memories of the Curtain Call shows that I danced in. Are the Curtain Call shows still on at the Bullawayo Theatre It seems the ballet world in my 'old home town' is a thriving rose bush!!! I am so very happy to know that. Are the bi-annual Eistedfords still happening As a little girl, I watched Nicolette Loxton and Carol Kingsley being adjudicated. They must have been young budding teenage dancers back then. When in Cape Town, I saw them dance at the then 'Nico Malan Theatre' in Cape Town, and was proud that they were originally Zim dancers. I see that Rosemary Williams (now Frost), sent a blog message. I would like to contact her. As far as I'm aware, Kim Smith (now Day) is still teaching at UCT Ballet School. Indeed, for a tiny country, Zim certainly produced many famous ballerinas and dancers. Long may ballet remain a cultural reality in both Zim and South Africa. I'm now living in Cape Town. I left Bulawayo with my retired parents, in December 1983, at the age of 18. In Cape Town, I had to find an office job to support myself, never going back to ballet until I was 29. I'd got up to Elementary level in Bulawayo, so merely carried on in the Elementary class. I decided to take up adult ballet classes, and for 4 years, I kept fit this way and even braved a couple of shows at St Josephs School in Rondebosch where the classes were held! We've got some great dancers developing in Cape Town, and I hope Zim's up and coming dancers come over to SA to do shows. I'll continue to keep up to date with what's going on in good old 'Bullies'.
