8) Bulawayo News BULAWAYO PUBLICITY ASSOCIATION The rain we are having is a two-edged sword in that it has caused the potholes to deepen and widen and increase and there are pools of water on the sides of the roads, so please drivers, have consideration and patience when motorists impinge on your lane to avoid these. Do not hoot them or try to overtake - you may be in the same position one day. Reading is one of life's simple pleasures and is crucial to the academic development of young minds and their integration into society. The Bulawayo Public Library in Fort Street provides facilities to help students. It has a large stock of new textbooks in all subjects, a study room for learners and an internet cafe with Wifi. The Ascot Library, a branch of the library in the city is very popular with children as it has a good stock of children's books for all ages, as well as adult fiction. If you are interested in reading biographies or autobiographies of well known personalities in the past, the Vigne Bookshop and Library is the place to go. Mona Lisa Saloon, in 14th Avenue, just off Fife Street, has had a complete facelift and looks so clean and bright and attractive. TRAVEL, TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY The Cut Hotel and nearby Orange Grove Motel, off the Harare-Chirundu Highway on the way to Chinoyi, en route to Kariba are two-star accommodation establishments with three star facilities. The rooms are all en suite with 7 TV channels and wireless internet access. A very important point for tourists is that Visa and Master cards are accepted, as well as Rand and Botswana Pula. The Orange Grove Motel has an on-site fitness centre and beauty parlour and spa, as well as a swimming pool. The Bulawayo Publicity Association keeps a supply of their brochures. According to Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe figures 20 scheduled airlines including cargo carriers operated into Zimbabwe last year. There is a possibility that two more airlines will be flying into Zimbabwe this year. Both Fastjet and FlyAfrica are keen to start operating into Bulawayo. (Air Zimbabwe flies to Johannesburg on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sunday) Fastjet now has a free baggage allowance of two bags weighing a maximum of 20kg each available on flights between Johannesburg and Harare. The airline's Chief Executive Officer is an ex Air Zimbabwe pilot, and they have always had a good reputation. Passengers at South African airports are advised to beware of trolley operators who demand large amounts of money for pushing their luggage. Passengers are encouraged to use only airport-accredited porters indentified by their orange uniforms with their names and operating number. Interesting facts about airlines and planes. The world's oldest airline is the Dutch carrier KLM which was established in 1919. Qantas invented the business class in 1979. It has a zero fatality safety record. Lights are dimmed in cabins on landing so that if the landing goes badly and the lights fail, passenger's eyes will already be adjusted to the darkness. Airplanes are designed to withstand lightning strikes. The Natural History Museum is open daily from 8a.m to 5 p.m. One of the fascinating exhibits is the Ceolocanth, which is not a fibre glass replica but a genuine fish. It was the second Ceolocanth ever found although pods of them still exist. It was donated to the Museum in the late '70s. Another must to visit is the unique display of all dinosaurs found in Zimbabwe. It is a temporary display and will be moved in about 3 months time, so make a point of visiting it with your children soon. The Bulawayo Publicity Association is 84 years old, but not a dinosaur. It can be said to be a community's single most important promotional and marketing organization, as it represents all components of the city. It is an independent non profit making organization and despite its parlous financial state is doing its utmost to promote Bulawayo as an important historic, cultural and business destination. After all we have two of the worlds UNESCO Heritage Sites, one of the few Railway museums in Southern Africa, a much admired Natural History Museum, an Olympic sized swimming pool which is often used for national, regional and international competitions, as is the Hockey stadium, and an international cricket complex. After many false starts the Association is reviving the producing of a DVD featuring Bulawayo, the Matopos and including Hwange and the Falls to show the international travelers that we are a good reference point to visit the other tourist resorts.
