Morning Mirror is a publication run for the benefit of Bulawayo's only geriatric and frail care home. ADVERTS TO BE SUBMITTED BY MONDAYS AT 5 P.M ++++ 1) Editorial Why I'm wild about Zimbabwe: The regime is gruesome but this is a beautiful country and you should go. Zimbabwe has a terrible reputation, and for excellent reasons. The economy is in free fall, there is mass unemployment and every reason to fear for the future. So it is understandable that few British people choose to go on holiday to this former British colony. But they are making a terrible mistake. Whatever its political problems, Zimbabwe is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, and its people the kindest and most welcoming. My family and I first travelled here on holiday five years ago, when we went on an unforgettable safari and visited the breathtaking Victoria Falls. Ever since, we have hankered to return. So this summer, my wife and four of our children flew via Johannesburg into Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second-largest city, where we stayed in Hornung Park Lodge, run by Fredi and Rita Ruf, an Austrian couple. It's the ideal place to relax after a long overnight flight. They gave us their usual warm welcome and we spent two days exploring the old town of Bulawayo with its boulevards that are wide enough for oxcarts to turn round in. After a couple of days, we travelled south towards the Matobo National Park, a mountain wilderness which has spectacular rock formations. These rocks look as if they have been expertly and precisely placed by an artistic genius, but in fact they are all the work of nature. Some of the formations reminded us of the work of the sculptor Henry Moore. The area is sacred to the local Ndebele people, and Cecil Rhodes, the controversial Englishman who founded Rhodesia (Zimbabwe's name before independence), is buried on the top of one of these hills, with the most wonderful panorama around him. It's called World's View, and is simply magnificent. After visiting Rhodes' grave, we travelled to the nearby Camp Amalinda, which is built right into the rocks. There was even an ancient cave painting on one of our bedroom walls. We felt comfortable and, at the same time, close to nature. Our guide, Kevin, took us to the National Park. His knowledge of local animals and birds was encyclopaedic. As we drove slowly along, he pointed out a white-browed sparrow-weaver, a red-wing starling, the lilac-breasted roller (our favourite), two black eagles, the southern yellow-billed hornbill, the 'go-away' bird, the magpie shrike, the African grey-billed hornbill, the wattled lapwing and some lappet-faced vultures. It was magical. We also spot a rock dassie (a sort of rodent), a klipspringer, (a kind of antelope) and some beautiful impala bouncing away through the bush as if they had springs on their heels. One morning, Kevin took us with a tracker through the bush in search of white rhino. Eventually we found some and, approaching them carefully, we were able to get within 10ft and watched them eating, lying down, getting up. We were quite scared when they all lined up facing us, looking as though they were about to charge. It was a huge privilege to be so close to them. The following day, we scrambled miles through the bush to visit a cave with paintings on the rocks made by bushmen many thousands of years ago. In the evening, we ate at a communal table and made friends with many of the guests. None of them was British, though many had come from South Africa. One, Ros, turned out to be a professional hairdresser and beautician. Following pleas from all my family to tidy me up, she gave me a free haircut. In the mornings, we swam in a beautiful, but very cold, infinity pool. Camp Amalinda was a wonderful place and we wished we could have stayed longer. We then drove right across Zimbabwe, a huge 12-hour journey, to reach the Eastern Highlands on the Mozambique border. There we stayed at Leopard Rock, a large colonial-style hotel with roaring fires in every room, this superbly run establishment reminded me of the setting for many an Agatha Christie novel. In the evening, we would walk out to a viewing point in the bush to watch zebra, impala and ostrich having their evening meal. We went on fabulous walks to the peak of Chinyakwaremba Rock, from where we had amazing views across to Mozambique. Best if all, from my 25-year-old son William's point of view, there was a superb golf course, wonderfully maintained and also with glorious views. We felt we could have stayed at Leopard Rock for ever, and felt sad to leave and travel to Harare, then home after an utterly remarkable holiday. However, it would be idle to pretend there were no problems. There are many potholes on the roads, which means it is dangerous to drive fast. There are constant checkpoints and the police inspect your car and will fine you $20 for the most minor infraction. In several cases, they claimed that we had faults which did not exist at all. This creates a dilemma. Do you stay and argue it out with the policeman, a process which can take several hours, or do you pay your fine and get on with your journey Do you stay and argue it out with the policeman, a process which can take several hours, or do you pay your fine and get on with your journey During one incident, I was all for giving in and paying the fine but my 29-year-old barrister daughter was determined for us to stand our ground. After about 30 minutes of heated debate, during which we tried to persuade them the fine they were proposing wasn't valid in law, they withdrew it. Some people worry whether you are supporting the corrupt regime of Robert Mugabe by going on holiday to Zimbabwe. I don't think so. Looked at from a different prospective, you are helping the hard-pressed local people by bringing them your business. We hope to return again and again. 'See it at all costs. It is both wonderful and devastating.' [New York Observer] 'It's a noble, sincere undertaking that will see many leave the cinema with fresh insights. You can't really ask for much more than that.' [Sky Movies] Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members] Supper available from 6.15 p.m. Mozart: La Finta Giardiniera Friday 18 November in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. Mozart was 18 when 'La Finta Giardiniera' ('The Pretend Gardener') was first seen in early 1775, though he already had a number of operas to his name. Although a comedy, the opera provides early evidence of Mozart's ability to capture the more serious truths that lurk beneath a farcical surface. 'Three hours of pure happiness.' [La Croix] 'Wonderfully simplistic staging and direction allied with outstanding singer acting are matched in the pit.' [MusicWeb International] Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Dinner available during the interval ($10.00) There will be no film on Thursday 24 November as the Robert Sibson Hall has been booked for a private function. Bernstein conducts Brahms and Tchaikovsky Friday 25 November in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. Leonard Bernstein conducts Brahms' massive Second Piano Concerto (with Krystian Zimerman as soloist) and Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony. 'Bernstein puts everything into his conducting and is quite unbelievable. A masterful performance by a wonderful orchestra and a sublime conductor. Highly recommended.' [Amazon review] 'Zimerman deserves ten stars for his performance of the Second Piano Concerto. It is three in one - Passionate, Musical and Precise.' [Amazon review] Academy End of Year Concert Thursday 1 December in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.00 p.m. The best of the Academy's students will be joined by guests, and the raffle will be drawn during the interval. N.B. Change of date to avoid a clash with other musical events! Please note that the serialisation of 'Our Mutual Friend ' previously advertised for 24 November and 1 December will now be shown over two evenings on Thursdays 8 and 15 December. ++++ 3) Congratulations Matt and Judy Oliver are thrilled to announce that our son William's lovely wife, Kim (nee Murrell) gave birth to a precious daughter, Isabella Anne Oliver, on November the 3rd. The anti-fire ethic popularised by 'Smokey Bear' in the USA in the thirties took about another thirty years or so to correct as forest researchers and ecologists discovered and recognised the essential role of periodic fire in various forest, woodland and grassland types and prescribed suitable fire management regimes. Some were 'early' [dry season] involving 'cool' fires, some 'late' [hot season], involving 'hot' fires. Not calendar-based, but on the physical, 'ground' state of the vegetation and pertaining weather conditions. 'Natural' fires started by lightning at intervals not yet enumerated, could be large to very large if started by a 'dry' storm, [or by indigenous hunters], or small [a couple of acres or hectares] if soon rained out by following rain from a 'wet' storm. 2 ''Rural' management and protective fires ARE legal in this country under the Forest Act, Cap 19:05 as revised 1996, Part VIII [pp 323-5]. Other rural fires, started carelessly, deliberately eg., poaching, vandals, or otherwise are not & must be extinguished but seldom are, even though accountable at law. Agreed that forest can be destroyed in a few years by regular wildfire, having seen maybe 50 plus years' Zambezi Teak protection and management in the Lupane District, reduced to ground level in about five years by repeated fire --- assisted by frost ---, BUT remove fire from the areas for the next 50 to say 100 years the forest will have returned. Fire tends to drive woody plants underground; remove the fire [and severe frost !] & the forest or 'bush' returns, as proved by several long-term forestry trials eg Zambia 1933+ Ndola, 1961+ Masese & Machili, Zimbabwe 1948-49+ Matopos, and similarly in ZA. 3 Urban fires another matter in terms of pollution, and I have no knowledge of the Bye Laws, BUT the burning of leaves is to be deplored as destroying valuable organic material, while wood fires for cooking/domestic use, especially by the growing numbers of disadvantaged urban dwellers of Zimbabwe today, are totally unavoidable. Sort out our national economy so people can earn a living wage and afford solar or ZESA for fuel and that will reduce the amount of wood cut and burnt. 4 Finally, reduce the human population. There are too many of us, and Mother Earth is less and less able to support us. Fortunately, having recently turned 80, I've not all that much longer to go ! Roll on ! 5 I'd be happy to communicate direct with Lisa if she so wishes, and am willing to share my professional experience in forestry and natural resources, much of which has involved the use and mis-use of fire, which began in 1957 and continues long into 'retirement' today. geof, now of esigodini. PS I still love the fragrance of woodsmoke from domestic fires of an evening, as much part of 'my Africa' now, along with early cock crow, as it was when I arrived in Lobatsi & Plumtree in 1951. g ++++ 9) Harare And Gweru News ++++ 10) Wining, Dining and Coffee Houses PICCOLA ROMA - ITALIAN RESTAURANT TELEPHONE :- (09) 231246 - ASCOT SHOPPING CENTER MONDAY CLOSED OPEN :- TUESDAY TO SUNDAY FROM 10-ISH, LUNCH AND DINNER.
