5) Roses And Raspberries Wanton Deforestation The action by Milton Junior School in cutting down numerous large trees along its boundary with S Parirenyatwa St this week simply beggars belief. Many of these trees must have been at least 80 years old and were in prime condition. It seems that they were removed merely to make way for erection of a new fence - which surely could have been aligned to leave most if not all of the trees in place. Planted 80 or so years ago by far sighted individuals, the trees have literally been destroyed overnight by uncaring officials. The cutting down of huge mature trees at Coghlan School earlier this year was bad enough - to accommodate new buildings. But it now seems that some of the trees were not in the area of new development and could have been spared. The National Railways have also been at it, desecrating the General Manager's premises in Third St/Pauling Rd by cutting down virtually all the large trees which were such a feature of this landmark Bulawayo historic property. When enquiries were made as to the reason for this seemingly completely unnecessary destruction, the answer given was: 'It was a mistake'...... One wonders if any of the institutions had permission from the Bulawayo City Council to remove these trees - as is required under our by-laws......... Fortunately, plaudits can go to Christian Brothers College who, in stark contrast to the above destructive actions, have planted 300 trees this year on their grounds. Well done! Bulawayo needs every tree in the city - and more!
