Bulawayo Morning Mirror Edition 697 - 3/8/2016

In this edition

1) Editorial

Surely it's not too much to ask.

I was born in what was then Rhodesia and from the time I was old enough to read, I was reading about turmoil in my country. I'll never forget sitting across from my father one morning before school, in the days when everyone still had the daily newspaper delivered to their homes before breakfast, and reading on the front page the horrors of the war. There, in bold technicolour, was the photograph of a man who had been tortured and mutilated in the most horrific way..and I was so distraught I couldn't eat my breakfast and cried all the way to school.
That was in the 70s. In the 80s it was another form of civil struggle which, at one time, became so bad that we all went back to the bad old war days when everyone drove in convoy if leaving the city limits. My father worked in sales during much of that volatile time and traveled deep into the areas affected. He doesn't talk much about it but I know that every time he drove through the gates of our home after a trip, my mother almost cried with relief.
The 90s brought about a temporary peace..and then the start of a steady economic decline.
Within the next decade Zimbabwe would reach international notoriety, for a myriad of reasons: hyper-inflation, murky election processes, the emergence of the first meaningful opposition and, without making this a political commentary, questionable political policies.
And yet I stayed.
I've often been asked why.
One reason is the difficulty in gaining residence in most countries when you hold a Zimbabwean passport, but that's actually just pedantics. If I truly wanted to leave I know I would have by now.
I stayed because Zimbabwe, afflicted though it is, runs through my veins like the very blood that keeps me alive. Because I'm afraid that if I can't smell the scent of rain on African soil, I may not be able to breathe. I stayed because, despite it all, I believe in this country.
Throughout it all and although I trained as a journalist, I've always shunned politics. And I still do now. But at some point the lines between politics and social consciousness become blurred; without sound politics, society flounders: the elderly are robbed of their past, and the youth of their future. Which is exactly what is happening in Zimbabwe today.
Frankly I don't give a damn who's in charge, as long as that person - and his or her government - is looking after the interests of its people, as well as their own; as long as they care about me and the future of my children..and everyone else's, regardless of race, tribe, economic status. .
So in the last couple of weeks, that little glimmer of hope I've been feeling as Zimbabweans have been boldly calling for change, has had nothing to do with hate and everything to do with love..love of my family and Zimbabwe and its people. Yes, we've made mistakes and are still trying to figure out our convoluted racial hangovers and hang-ups. But recent weeks have shown we can put aside our fractured past and work together. At the end of the day we are all Zimbabweans, a truth that has haunted and eluded us our entire tortured history.
Previous generations have tried and failed to bring about a country which offers equity for all, and maybe now it's in the hands of the young: the custodians of social media who can get our message across in the simplest form to the rest of the world.
And that message is that we just want to live. We don't want wealth beyond our wildest dreams, but we do want the assurance that we can earn a living wage and educate and feed our children. We want peace, and the opportunity to be rewarded for our hard work and enterprise. We want a future we can hand over to our children.
Surely it's not too much to ask.

PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO AND THE ACADEMY

Thursday 4 August Chariots of Fire
Zimbabwe Academy of Music at 7.00 p.m.
On the eve of the Olympics a chance to see the internationally acclaimed Oscar-winning which tells the story of two athletes in the 1924 Olympics: Eric Liddell, a devout Scottish Christian who runs for the glory of God, and Harold Abrahams, an English Jew who runs to overcome prejudice.
'This 31-year-old Oscar winning true-life drama climaxing at the 1924 games proved a winner all the way. And it still is.' [Daily Star]
Admission: $3.00 [free to film members] Supper available from 6.15 p.m.

Friday 5 August La Reine morte - ballet
Zimbabwe Academy of Music at 6.30 p.m.
Originally created for the Ballet du Capitole in 2011, La Reine morte is based on the story of Don Pedro, Prince of Portugal, who fell in love with Doņa Ines de Castro, a lady-in-waiting of the Infanta, intended by his father as Pedro's wife. The sweethearts are married in secret, to the fury of the King, and the ensuing drama combines events in the real world with the two lovers' dreams and visions. The ballet harks back to the classical style, but brings a refreshing new insight to the genre of the tragic love story. The choreography is set to a selection of pieces by the quintessential composer of ballet music, Tchaikovsky.
'Intriguing subject matter and fine performances from an accomplished choreographer and his company.' [Music Web, May 2016]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Dinner available during the interval ($10.00)

Thursday 11 August Octopussy
Zimbabwe Academy of Music at 6.30 p.m.
A fake Faberge egg and a fellow agent's death lead James Bond to uncover an international jewel-smuggling operation, headed by the mysterious Octopussy, which is being used to disguise a nuclear attack on NATO forces.
'It's a pleasure to report that James Bond is confidently back on the beam.' [Washington Post]
'The action sequences are tighter, the visual gags more inventive, and if the plot is no great shakes, the whole thing is served up with a decent approximation to the old panache.' [Time Out]
Admission: $3.00 [free to film members] Supper available from 6.15 p.m.

Friday 12 August Smetana: The Bartered Bride
Zimbabwe Academy of Music at 6.30 p.m.
[postponed from 27 May]
Ma enka and Jenik are in love, but her father wants her to marry the son of the wealthiest man in town. In the end, youth and cunning outsmart age and power, and the constraints of rural life are thrown off for a while when the circus comes to town. Smetana's music for The Bartered Bride abounds with freshness and vitality, its energy generated by bold contrasts of mood and atmosphere, the exuberance of its folk-like rhythms and the catchiness of its tunes.
'This excellent production of Smetana's opera is a joy to watch and listen to. Adam Fischer's orchestral leadership is exemplary, supported by first class singers in the major roles and a vibrant chorus in both theatrical and musical terms.' [Presto Classics]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Dinner available during the interval ($10.00)

Thursday 18 August Concert: Genaro Periera (piano)
Zimbabwe Academy of Music at 6.30 p.m.
Genaro Pereira's concert a year ago will be remembered by many and we're delighted to welcome him back. His varied and imaginative programme includes:
Satie: Danse de travers
J.S. Bach: Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue in D minor
Luciano Berio: Luftklavier & Feuerklavier (from 6 Encores for piano)
Debussy: Reflets dans l'eau (from 'Images' Book I)
Godowsky: In the Kraton (from 'Java Suite')
Beethoven Piano Sonata No.31 in A flat major, Op.110
Admission: $10.00 & $5.00 [free to Red Carpet members] - booking at the Academy. Dinner available after the concert ($10.00)

8) Bulawayo News

BULAWAYO PUBLICITY ASSOCIATION
Despite the cold and stay-aways, the Bulawayo Publicity Association has been delighted to welcome a number of German tourists who have come into the office seeking information, as well as several couples from United Kingdom and Australia. A Japanese travel agent, who came to the Bulawayo Publicity Association stand during the travel expo, also came to the office with some of his colleagues to obtain more information and check out our offices. A family of 10 Hollanders will be spending 3 weeks in Zimbabwe in mid August, mostly in Hwange Game Reserve and Bulawayo, as the junior members of the party have never been to Zimbabwe before.

Khami Ruins, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has recently undergone a major face lift, which includes the ablution blocks and braai areas. The site museum has been completely revamped with stunning murals round the walls depicting human habitation in the area from the Stone Age to the Khami period. It is fascinating to know that, according to artifacts on display, Arab traders travelled as far as Zimbabwe to trade. For those of you who would like more information on the history and the Ruins themselves, a booklet entitled 'Khami, the capital of the Torwa State' written by Rob Burret and Paul Hubbard, is on sale at the Natural History Museum and Bulawayo Publicity Association office. Several companies run tours to the Ruins. The Bulawayo Publicity Association has their details.

The road signs from JMN Nkomo Street along 13th Avenue to Khami Ruins have been redesigned, so there is no danger of visitors losing their way now, as they are very clear and prominent.

The Zimbabwe versus New Zealand second cricket test match will be played at Queens Sports Club from the 6th to 10th August. So Bulawayo is not being left out of the cricket loop because a South African A squad played a mini test match in Bulawayo in July.

Air Zimbabwe started flying into Tanzania in early June and although the number of passengers is not high at the moment, it is steady. There is talk of Air Namibia flying between Bulawayo and Windhoek and Air Botswana flying Bulawayo to Gaborone, but these are not going to happen in the near future as the routes have never been viable, even in busy times.

LUNCH SPECIALS

Sunday lunch specials are offered at The Earth Cafe in the River Estate complex near BAC Club; 26 On Park opposite the museum; The Cattleman Steakhouse 12th Avenue (particularly if you enjoy your roast beef and veges); and the buffet at Fazak Hypermarket. Of course there are other restaurants that open on Sundays such as Canela, opposite Fazak (which offers a special Greek menu on a Sunday lunch from time to time; Bean There at BAC Club; Food Lovers Market and Brooks.

26 On Park management have taken over the cafe at the Art Gallery, now called The Nosh, which serves tasty and reasonable priced food. It is closed on Sundays.

What a pleasure to shop at Food Lovers Market now. It has been revamped, passages between foods made wider and shelves re-arranged to their best advantage. Everything looks clean bright and fresh. The staff has always been very helpful and friendly. A new General Manager has been appointed from South Africa.

Ascot Public Library is a little gem of a library which has a good stock of new books, adult and children and others on the shelves not so new but still fairly current. The world is a global village and knowledge is power and for those of you who travel or want their children to travel they must be able to express an opinion or show their knowledge of a subject. How embarrassing some of the children who have limited general knowledge are on local quiz programmes for example. What the Ascot Library does need is a printer..... Can anyone help please

The Zimbabwe High Goal Polocrosse Tournament will be played for the first time in Bulawayo at the polo grounds, Country Club on 13th and 14th August starting at 8 a.m. There will be full bar and catering

There is no getting away from the fact that business is quiet, but there is no rule to say that business people should stop advertising and promoting their products, so take advantage of the Bulawayo Publicity Association's offer to send information and a picture if possible to appear on its website, www.bulawayopublicity.com and to give news of new products or developments to be incorporated on its monthly newsletter. info@bulawayopublicity.com

BULAWAYO ISLAND HOSPICE SERVICES BULAWAYO

The Bulawayo Hospice would like to thank all the Schools that took part in our 'Tackie Day' fund raiser.
All proceeds will go to the purchasing of pain medication and the everyday running of the Hospice.

Please make a note that on Saturday 10th September at 7am the Bonsa Spar 7.5 km Cancer Fun
Walk 2016 will be taking place, we look forward to see you there, come and join in the fun and raise
much needed money for the various charities. 'One Step at a Time' is what it takes.

We will be having a ladies "High Tea" on the 27th August, we will keep you informed on the progress.

The Bulawayo Island Hospice has over 150 home based cancer patients which our four nurses visit weekly
or as often as they are needed.

This is why we need all your support to continue to give high quality service and supply some drugs when needed.

Precious Life Foundation (PLF) is on its final stretch towards self-sufficiency! We are asking for you to be a part of this. We run a shelter for young mothers where they have a chance to get back on their feet while learning agriculture. Already we have successful meat chicken outgrowing, egg production, crop and dairy farming. Each young mother has a chance to earn from each project and save for her future while she learns the trade.

Help us help more people! We have a great opportunity to buy 9 dairy heifers at a reduced rate, which would enable our dairy business to grow into something much more substantial. This would empower our young women in their capacity as farmers and help the organisation to become self-sustainable. The goal we aim to achieve is to raise $2700 by the end of July and another $2700 by the end of August. We are also looking for the initial $3600 in cost of feed, which we need until all the heifers begin their first lactation. WE WILL ACCEPT ANY DONATIONS OF FEED, such as hay, bran, lucerne, molasses etc. We are appealing to the Bulawayo community and friends from abroad to give what they can; by doing this, you will be investing in the future of PLF and joining the PLF family. We will send you newsletters and updates so you can watch the progress of all of our projects. We will invite you to sample our dairy products, which we are currently expanding. If you are willing to sponsor a full cow for $600, we will invite you to name it and visit it at the farm.

Please, anything that you can spare will significantly contribute to the future of PLF. If you would like to see our business plan or give a donation, please contact Dave on 077 894 5309 or Precious Life Foundation on Facebook. We have an online donation campaign at https://igg.me/at/fhEb3dfD2WE for credit card payments. There is also a PayPal account as Precious Life Foundation and Ecocash payments can be made to Agnes Rupwe on 0773 720 054.
