7) Bulawayo News BULAWAYO PUBLICITY ASSOCIATION The Bulawayo Publicity Association has brought up to date its tourist brochure which gives information about the local tourist attractions and other pertinent information and is very popular because of the city centre map on the front panel. The printing of the brochure was kindly sponsored by Bulawayo Holiday Inn. It is available free of charge from the offices of the Association and handed out at travel shows, visiting business delegations and tourist groups, amongst other outlets. HILLSIDE DAMS CONSERVANCY is keen to revive interest in the conservancy by offering walking trails, bird viewing, and nature walks, during which information is given about the trees, flora and fauna. There are walks every Friday at 7am or 8am for over 50s, for which there is no charge. Entrance fee to the dams is $2 and $1 for pensioners and children under 12. For further information contact Noe on 242620 between 8am - 12pm or 0715 531 366. The Alliance Francaise under its director Philippe Durand has become a vibrant organization and an asset to Bulawayo. Evening classes in French are held in the offices of the Bulawayo Publicity Association and a variety of entertainment, traditional and international is frequently performed at different venues, sponsored by the Alliance Francaise Zimbabwe. HOSPITALITY / TOURISM INDUSTRY The River Cafe, part of the River Estate in 12th Avenue next to BAC Club, is under new management and been renamed EARTH CAFe. A very attractive welcoming atmosphere with many new items on the menu, it is already very popular. For now the cafe will be open every day with a special roast on Sundays. The Orange Elephant craft shop which is located in front of the cafe, supports Zimbabwean artists and stocks unique and unusual gifts. AIR ZIMBABWE has introduced flights from Johannesburg to Bulawayo and return on Sundays. They depart Johannesburg at 12pm and return to Johannesburg at 13.45pm. Very sad to say but Mzilikazi Art & Craft Centre, a City Council project which provided means of livelihood and a skill for women and where gifted children were taught, has CLOSED down. It was no longer financially sustainable. The craft centre had a big clear out sale recently with pottery being sold at bargain prices. They intend to have another sale soon. The Home Industries Center where basket weaving and embroidery work is created, which is in the same complex, Taylor Avenue remains open. The cafe at the Art Gallery has been taken over by the management of 26 on Park. They are open Mondays to Saturdays but not for dinner. Phone 0775 901 120 for further information. The Gallery itself, except for the artists' studios, is closed on Sundays and Mondays. THE FARM HOUSE, some 48kms on the Kezi Road, is a great place for a weekend or a day's relaxation. Its amenities include game drives, nature walks, horse riding and bike rides. You can bring your own meat and drink and braai on the front lawn next to the swimming pool at $5 per head, or if you give prior notice, the Lodge will provide a lunch. Amongst the game are warthogs, wildebeest, zebra, and about 8 giraffe. A day out there should include a visit to the nearby Amagugu Cultural Centre at Maphisa to see the Ndebele painted walls and displays of woven rugs and basket ware. A little further on is the Enthandweni Children's Home, set in very scenic surroundings, so clean and attractive with its flower beds and painted buildings. They grow their own vegetables but always welcome toys, books and clothes.
