Ken Nortje The Chief Scout, Commissioners, Scout Leaders and Scouts of the Scout Association of Zimbabwe, are sad to announce the passing of Leader Trainer Ken Nortje on Thursday 14 April 2016. We offer our condolences to his niece Doreen and husband Bob, nephews Shaun and Ken and his family. Ken, who would have celebrated his 90th birthday in October, joined the Scout movement as a Wolf Cub (Cub Scout) and continued through the ranks of Scout, Senior Scout and Rover Scout. For many years he was an Assistant Scout Leader and Scout Leader in the 2nd Salisbury Scout Troop (2nd Borrowdale). He was directly responsible for the training of many of the Senior Scouts in his Troop in their gaining the highest Scouting award a Scout under the age of eighteen can aspire to, namely the Queen's Scout Award. Ken and his Senior Scout Troop where actively involved in the development of Ruwa Scout Park, approximately twenty kilometres from the city of Harare on the Mutare highway. Their lasting contribution in the Park, being the construction of the altar in the Park's Chapel, with granny Lillian Scamell embroidering the altar cloths. Among his Scouting expeditions he participated in, was his Troop's climb of Kilimanjaro, numerous Scout expeditions to the Okavango Swamps, hikes in the Chimanimani Mountains and Matopos, South African National Patrol Leader Training camps, and American Camporees including one National American Jamboree. In his late seventies, he moved form Harare to Mutare where he continued with the training of Scout Leaders in that city until fairly recently. He joined with the 1st Bulawayo (Pioneer) Scout Troop in his last climb in the Chimanimani mountains at the age of seventy-nine, completing the grueling three day hike carrying his own rucksack and sleeping on the ground under the stars. As a Scout Leader, Ken attained his Scout Wood Badge, followed later by his Assistant Leader Trainer third bead and finally his Leader Trainer fourth bead, thus becoming a member of the Mashonaland Leader Training Team. Whilst still actively involved in the uniformed section of the movement, he was elected on to the National Scout Council, where he held the position of National Treasurer for many years. In recognition for his devoted services to the Scout Movement, Ken was awarded The Medal of Merit, The Silver Eagle and The Golden Lion; Zimbabwean Scoutings highest award His other interests were; scuba diving, he gained his light aircraft pilot license, a lover of nature and was a keen yachtsman, who will be remembered for his contribution at a number of annual Sailing Schools on Lake MciLwaine (Chivero). Ken was deeply religious, being a server and later sub deacon in his parish church in Marandellas (Marondera) a town where he was involved in Carolina farm, growing and canning fruit. Ken was without doubt, the longest actively serving member of the Scout Association of Zimbabwe. We, salute Ken's valuable contribution to Scouting and mourn his loss, now that he has " GONE HOME" Sorry to hear of the passing of Moorie Dunlop. Have tried for ages to find out where he was. The Zimbabwe Republic Police recently also launched a national WhatsApp hotline where members of the public can register their complaints to the police via Whatsapp. The ZRP National Whatsapp hotline number is +263782475000 INVITATION TO WHITE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATIONS TO PARTICIPATE IN A STUDY ENTITLED 'ARCHIVING WHITE COMMUNITY HISTORICAL MANUSCRIPTS IN POST COLONIAL ZIMBABWE'; A STUDY BY SAMUEL CHABIKWA PhD CANDIDATE UNIVERSITY OF BOTSWANA Displaced and endangered memories of a minority, (Historical Manuscripts of the White Community in Zimbabwe) is central to the research problem. Documentation and archival memory affects many of the central concepts of society's governance, functioning, identity, 'memory' and stability. Records and archives support and strengthen important elements of society's infrastructure, culture and operations. They contribute to accountability, transparency, multiculturalism, diversity, and social justice (Jimerson, 2005). However, in the case of Zimbabwe, documentation and archival memory are contested territory, because of the 'silences' and 'absences' of minorities and the underrepresented in mainstream archives. Zimbabwean archival memory is selective and the voices of the socio-political and economic elites abound in the archive at the expense of other voices. Furthermore, in the case of the National Archives of Zimbabwe, public sector records and archives predominate. Minorities and the underrepresented are evident by their 'absences' and 'silences.' In post colonial Zimbabwe, the white community is a racial and numerical minority, as categorized by Schaefer (1993), constituting less than 5% of the total population. Mainstream archival activities have marginalized their documentation in the post colonial dispensation. Collection Development Policy, Appraisal strategies and the Oral History Programme, have been utilized to fill the gaps in the archive, by focusing on documenting the black majority absent from the Colonial archive. The registry model (Ngulube, 2012) that NAZ, subscribes to has ensured that government activities and its records and archives predominate the post colonial archive in Zimbabwe. The challenge to these efforts has been that it has tended to focus on documenting socio-political and economic elites from the black majority, whilst marginalizing minorities and the underrepresented from the black majority (Ngulube, 2012; Murambiwa et. al., 2012; and Manungo, 2012) including whites as a racial and ethnic grouping. The above has created a scenario where HM of the white community abound within and outside of Zimbabwe. The HM are housed and managed by varied repositories, organizations, families and individuals in undetermined conditions and locations. Their extent, format, and content are unknown, and most are yet to be adequately identified and described. Their location and preservation conditions are unknown, and their users are also unknown and for what purposes are they consulted, as such this endangers this mutually shared cultural heritage to decay and neglect and a resultant loss to Zimbabwe. Resultantly, too they have been withdrawn from circulation and denying society and the wider scholarly community access to them. The study, therefore, acts as an intervention strategy to establish the context of storage and preservation, the extent of HM, the formats or nature of HM, and the contents of the HM, and to propose a management framework that will ensure the preservation of the above, and save them from further decay and degradation given that they are endangered. This will bequeath a wealth of information and knowledge to both the heirs of the White community, and to Zimbabweans at large. On the other hand it will bring the HM into the wider scholarly community in terms of circulation. A curatorial strategy proposed by the study is essential for guaranteeing that we address the 'silences' and 'absences' of the voices of the white community in post colonial Zimbabwe, given that these have potential and actual value, for cultural preservation, the reconstruction of the past, administration and as part of the collective societal memory, covering socio-economic, political and technological issues. This study affirms the call of justice as advocated for by Jimerson (2005), when he argued that the prevailing relations of power and influence in societies(even in democracies) tends to disadvantage certain voices. The call of justice implies two imperatives, firstly to proactively enable participation and access, and secondly to construct the archive beyond the normative assumptions circumscribed by power and the status quo. In this context the justice potential of the HM must be identified and sustained (fought) for, destroying, neglecting and hiding the HM of the white community because we have gaps to fill about the black community is an injustice. The HM of the white community is a powerful resource for restorative justice and critical for the shaping of contemporary Zimbabwean memory and the understanding of Zimbabwe as a society. A study to identify the nature, format, extent, location and preservation conditions of the HM of the white community in post colonial Zimbabwe, is not only restorative justice, but creating a more accurate version of the past of which (information) contained in the HM can assist Zimbabwe, to shape and connect with contemporary and future struggles for social justice and equity, accountability, governance, functioning, memory, stability, transparency, multiculturalism, and diversity. The agenda for this study is to clarify the management and preservation of Historical Manuscripts of the White community in post colonial Zimbabwe and to propose a management framework for the archiving of the memories of minorities and the underrepresented. This would guarantee that voices of the underrepresented which are endangered memories are safeguarded from decay and disappearance from the collective memory, addressing the issues of alienation, domination and disempowerment of minorities and the underrepresented in Zimbabwe.
