CONDOLENCES

  • Like many others we were caught by the forced closure of The Daily News, so had no way of putting out a wider Thank You to our friends and family.

My mother, Doreen Sullivan passed away on Thursday 28th August, and Father Vincent was here with most of our family, six of the seven children and all four of our own children. He celebrated a joyful Mass of the Resurrection for her, humbly assisted by Archbishop Pius Ncube and Archbishop Henry Karlen, with Father Kevin O'Dogherty, Father Odilo Weeger and seven more priests, at Christ the King on Tuesday 2nd April.

Larry and Althea Farren produced a beautiful booklet in record time and to the highest standards, and the Catenian and catholic Womens league ladies laid on a sumptuous reception in the Hall. We have been quite overwhelmed by the condolences and the warmth of our families and friends, and will try to write soon. In the meantime we all wanted to say how much we appreciate them. We have a lovely community, small though it is, and it includes people of every race and religion. So, from Larry Sullivan, John and Wallis, and all the Sullivan families, we truly appreciate the kindness and love shown to us, at this time when we have lost our wife and mother, Doreen. May God warmly bless each of you in our wonderful Bulawayo community.

  • Ray Fawcett died on Friday night. Hospice made sure that he didn't suffer any pain. The memorial service will be on Wednesday at the Baptist Church Pinelands at 4pm and the family will then have another service in Bulawayo the following week. So very sad to say farewell to yet another of Bulawayo's characters.

  • Just a short note this morning to advise you of Ann Haward's passing. She was the widow of Dr Adrian Haward. She was well known to a number of people, not only from the surgery, but she was an active social tennis player. Both Sue and I were very close to her and we have known her for many, many years.

Bring Light

There is some darkness in most human minds today, so there is a darkness component in most scenes and situations. Why else is there so much unhappiness and sorrow in the world? So how much value can be given to someone who is able to bring light and lightness to a place or a moment, where others have brought their dark? Like a crown of sparkling jewels, their presence and their words are priceless. It may only be a gentle smile of comfort, an attitude of genuine interest, some words which diffuse an awkward moment. Those who stay light in spirit while others weave their dark are both illuminated and illuminators. Watch out for such a moment today where you may illuminate. Make that moment momentous!
