Antelope Park response to canned hunting allegations made on ITV's This Morning programme Antelope Park and its partners, Lion Encounter and ALERT (African Lion and Environmental Research Trust ) are deeply saddened by the death of Cecil the lion. They are against the hunting of lions and support the prevention of such hunting. In this regard Antelope Park and its partners were disquieted by comments made on Thursday 30th July 2015 by Virginia McKenna OBE, founder of the Born Free Foundation, and Garth Hovell, a game guide, who took part in a discussion on ITV's This Morning programme regarding the shooting of Cecil in Zimbabwe. During the broadcast several comments were made regarding Antelope Park in Zimbabwe that are false. Virginia McKenna stated the following in relation to the captive bred lions and lion walks at Antelope Park: '...a lot of them, I'm not saying all of them, but a lot of them, apparently, are sold to canned hunting in South Africa. Now, if that isn't something to really shout about, this is an extension of pretending that everything is going to be fine because these animals are going to go back to the wild, not at all. They are bred especially for these walks and then the fate of some is actually to be in canned hunting in South Africa.' Neither Antelope Park nor its partners, breed lions for lion walks, but rather to take part in the African Lion Rehabilitation & Release into the Wild Programme (should you wish to donate to this programme, click here http://campaign.justgiving.com/charity/africanlion/alert). Further, no lion has ever, or will ever be sold with the intention of that lion being shot in the canned hunting industry in South Africa or elsewhere. The very idea is against the fundamental intention of Antelope Park and its partners. Allegations that Antelope Park, and by association its partners, are selling lions for canned hunting first arose in February 2008 when the UK's Sunday Times Newspaper featured an article entitled 'African Lion Encounters: A Bloody Con'. The article claimed that 'as many as 59 lion cubs raised at Antelope Park have been sold to big-game-hunting operations to be shot for sport.' in relation to sales of lions made by Antelope Park to South Africa. Antelope Park approached the Press Complaints Commission (PCC), which undertook an independent investigation that included reviewing records provided by Antelope Park, the buyers in South Africa and export permits issued by the Zimbabwean Parks & Wildlife Management Authority. The investigation confirmed that regulations were in place to prevent the hunting of lions and that the prevention of hunting was a primary requirement of the sale. In light of this investigation the newspaper was required to retract the story and issue a public apology in which it stated, 'We accept that the owners of the park never have and never will intentionally sell lions for 'canned' hunting. We regret any impression that Antelope Park co-operated in the supply of animals for hunting.' Those operators seek to make additional income from the lions before they are shot, allowing people to interact with young cubs and to take them on walks. Additionally, bones from the lion victims are sold to feed the growing demand for lion parts used in various traditional medicines.
