Handsome Handwriting.

I wonder if our grandchildren will ever know the thrill of receiving a letter addressed with genuine, elegant, cursive script

I will never forget my Mother's handwriting, strong, intelligent, forthright, she stood out amongst women and men!! Her shopping list was always written on the back of a fifty cardboard box of cigarettes (you never see those these days except for cigars or Balkan Sobranis' !! I still get a thrill when I see her handwriting on the back of family photographs.

Divine Margot too had extraordinary writing but hers was full of graceful loops and flourishes and her envelopes were scented and beautifully decorated with flowers. Margot's writing was an effortless art, all her zeros had eyeballs in them, all her 'g's and 'y's had glorious flourishes

My own handwriting has not changed since I was in Standard Two when I received the handwriting prize from the beautiful Miss Jean MacDonald at Coghlan School! I read a book on handwriting once and began to dislike some of my characteristics reflected in my hand writing, but try as I may I never managed to change. They say a leopard never changes its spots!! How many hours did I scrawl away as a journalist writing radio scripts for James Thrush, using a shorthand only known to me. It's so much easier, admittedly, to keep a train of thought when typing, even I can admit to that.

I also read once that intelligent people do not write on a line but slightly above the line, well the best way around that is to write on paper without lines!! I have a whole drawer full of beautiful stationery, cards with glittering peacocks, birthday cards for anyone from birth to 90!! But now I resort sadly, like everyone else, to an apple icard on the computer!!

I even had personalized stationery printed some time ago, now totally redundant, I have not sent a letter by post in absolute years.

Christmas Cards, once a cherished but much dreaded chore many years ago, get sent electronically now. We always used to buy the charity Christmas cards, and I often think that was such a fabulous source of revenue for many charities.

HeeHoo has very manly handwriting, totally illegible of course, but unlike many men his nimble fingers can skim the keyboard effortlessly and with great speed.
Our children will never have an affinity with a pen as we had, theirs is a world of typewriter keys, they will remember the clicking of the key, as opposed to the light scratch of a ball point pen. Have they ever even seen a postcard I muse

They will never know the delight of an autograph book, where one could combine one's literary ability with a poem and a picture, one could let one's imagination run riot with calligraphy and one could scribble and scrawl to one's hearts content!

The only time I ever see handwriting these days is during a bridge game, on a bridge score sheet! And a doodle When did you last see a doodle Treble clefts were my favorite followed by faces in profile for some odd reason!! Our telephone pads were always covered in doodles, but now the numbers go straight into a smart phone!!

How often does one even sign one's name these days I remember practising my signature for hours trying to make it adult and imperious, but it is still so childishly innocent that the whole family can copy my signature if needs be!!!

I will always remember when I received love letters from HeeHoo when he was on permanent call-up in the army in the seventies. (A 'love' letter from a Capricorn is a rare event), but I have kept all his letters, written from the back of beyond in some God Forsaken useless place in an even more destructive and useless endeavour (as was our Bush War).

Remembering those glorious days of beautiful copperplate inscriptions, I always take great pains in being overly polite with e mails, it is so easy to mistake an hasty e mail for bluntness.

As we mourn the demise of a graceful skill, I pray that my offspring will at least be able to remember at least a small part of that delicious art of handwriting.

Pumping Legs for Water 2015: 16 - 18 July

Pumping Legs for Water is a two day, 100 km sponsored mountain bike ride, within the Main Camp area of Hwange National Park. The event is organized by the Matabeleland branch of Wildlife & Environment Zimbabwe (WEZ) and profits from the ride go towards supporting WEZ projects, including the Hwange Game Water Supply Programme, which carries out repairs and maintenance to pumped pans within the Park, providing life-giving water to the animals there.

This year the ride will take place on Friday 17 & Saturday 18 July, with a briefing at Main Camp on the evening of Thursday 16 July, which all participants are expected to attend. The entry fee is $150. This is not a race. For safety reasons cyclists will be riding in groups of 20 to 25 riders. Each group will be accompanied by a leading and trailing vehicle with armed escorts. Cyclists must remain within these groups at all times.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR AS MANY RIDERS AS POSSIBLE !! IF YOU HAVE NOT YET REGISTERED, THERE IS STILL TIME - JOIN US FOR AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE WITH THE ANIMALS OF HWANGE NATIONAL PARK.

WEZ is appealing to the public to support this event by:

Sponsoring the cyclists. While this is not a race it is also not an easy ride. The cyclists require to put a lot of effort into completing this ride; by sponsoring them you can help make all their efforts worthwhile, as well as making a meaningful contribution to wildlife conservation

Donating prizes or goods. As this is not a race there is no winner but two trophies are awarded - One, firstly, for the person who brings in the most sponsorship (Best Supporter) and, secondly, a trophy for the person who best represents the Spirit of the Ride. Prizes are also awarded to other riders for special achievements. Donations are also needed for the water points and catering, while goods which can be used by the Game Water Supply Unit (such as diesel, engine oil, shovels or tools) are also much appreciated

Anyone wanting more information about the ride, or registration forms, can email cheryl54@yoafrica.com or visit us on Facebook.

PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO AND THE ACADEMY

GIGI
Thursday 16 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m.
'Gigi' was perhaps the last great MGM musical and won a record-breaking nine Academy Awards at the 1959 Oscars. Based on the novella of the same name by Colette, the words and music were by Lerner and Loewe with the music for the film arranged and conducted by Andre Previn.
A musical film that bears such a basic resemblance to My Fair Lady that the authors may want to sue themselves, but don't think this point of resemblance is made in criticism of the film, for Gigi"is a charming entertainment that can stand on its own two legs..Vincente Minnelli has marshalled a cast to give a set of performances that, for quality and harmony, are superb.' [The New York Times]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members] Supper available from 6.15 p.m. - must be ordered in advance.

WEBER: EURYANTHE
Friday 17 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m.
Euryanthe is a 'grand, heroic, romantic' opera by Weber, first performed at in 1823. Weber attempted to create a genuinely through-composed music drama that left behind all elements of popular German theatre, and from a purely musical standpoint, he succeeded, managing to blend musical sections together with a fluidity that was ahead of its time. His vivid orchestration and evocative dramatic music contribute to a score that is brilliant throughout
With "Euryanthe" the most important thing is Weber's magnificent music and vocal writing, and this the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari under the direction of Gerard Korsten performs magnificently... As to the staging, it's naturalistically traditional without being overbearing. [Amazon review]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Dinner available during the interval ($10.00) - must be ordered in advance.

THE NAME OF THE ROSE
Thursday 23 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m.
Adapted from Umberto Eco's best-selling novel, The Name of the Rose is a 14th century murder-mystery thriller starring Sean Connery as William of Baskerville, a Franciscan monk displaying the skills of Sherlock Holmes.
Sean Connery proved a perfect choice as William of Baskerville, the 14th-century Sherlock Holmes figure investigating the deaths in an Italian monastery. It's one of Connery's best performances, a happy marriage of character acting and star casting.... The Name of the Rose is one of the most underrated movies of the eighties.' [IMDb Review]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members] Supper available from 6.15 p.m. - must be ordered in advance.

RIMSKY-KORSAKOV: LE COQ D'OR
Friday 24 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m.
Many will be familiar with the orchestral suite from Rimsky-Korsakov's last opera Le Coq d'Or (The Golden Cockerel) but the opera itself is not often staged. A mysterious astrologer gives King Dodon a Golden Cockerel to watch over the kingdom in return for a promise to grant him a wish but dire consequences ensue when the King breaks his promise.
The performances here are terrific and the music unflaggingly enchanting. The Tsar's courtship sequence is thoroughly modern and not a little risque. The procession of wonderful creatures on stage matches well the brilliance of the orchestral sections of the score.' [Musicweb International]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Dinner available during the interval ($10.00) - must be ordered in advance.

CHENJERAI HOVE

One of Zimbabwe's best known writers, Chenjerai Hove, has died in Norway at the age of 59.
The exact cause of death is not clear but he suffered from liver problems, his wife Tekla Hove told the BBC.
Mr Hove was known as a critic of President Robert Mugabe and went into self-imposed exile in 2001 after harassment from the authorities.
He won several awards for his work and was regarded as a leading figure in post-colonial literature in Zimbabwe.
Mr Hove's wife and sister were with him when he died - the first time they had been together since 2001.
He had been taken ill three weeks ago and slowly deteriorated but he remained "bright and clear until the end", said friends.

"Chenjerai Hove was one of the most incredible writing talents I have ever met, very much in the tradition of Kenyan writer Ngugi wa Thiong'o
He had a brilliant command of the English language, only bettered by his brilliant mastery of his own language, Shona.
His tiny novel Bones is full of incredible allegories and imagery that could only come from the Shona oral tradition.
After Zimbabwean independence in 1980 - when it was possible to bump into writers like Charles Mungoshi, Dambudzo Marechera and Chenjerai Hove all in the same space - he was one of the leading figures of African literature who mentored new talent.
I will miss him enormously.
It is such a shame his exile makes us question the direction that Zimbabwe has taken in relation to its great artists."
Mr Hove was a "great writer, novelist, poet and playwright", Mr Lunde said, "but first and foremost he was a freedom fighter, fighting for human rights in his country".

My Beautiful Home 2015:
Competition highlights Matobo art and tradition
The Matobo Hills is many different things to many different people: to some it's a bird watcher's paradise, to others a spiritual retreat; some are fascinated by the geomorphology and deep cultural heritage of it while others love it for its incredible diversity of flora and fauna, its hiking trails and picturesque picnic sites.
And to others still - and most importantly of all - it's plain and simply 'home'.
One of the greatest charms of the hills are the villages and homesteads of the proud Matabele people, dotted throughout the Matobo District and featuring incredible backdrops of granite incomparable to almost any landscape in this country. The traditional architecture of neatly-thatched huts, decorated in natural pigments, add a rich and distinctive characteristic to the Matobo landscape..and, ultimately, inspired the local initiative which has affectionately become known as My Beautiful Home.
The project, launched in 2014, aims to highlight and maintain the culture of the area, in particular the art of decorating homes in the traditional way, while, at the same time, encouraging development and sustainability; this is done in the form of a competition open to villages within the Matobo District.
Last year's competition, a wholly locally run initiative, was a resounding success, so much so that this year's event has been extended from two wards to seven, considerably broadening its scope and potential impact.
The time-frame for the competition follows the seasons: traditionally huts are repaired and decorated in winter once the rains, which would have washed the previous year's decorations away, have ended, and the harvest is over. As such, the 'Beautiful Home' team visited Chief Masuku's village meeting in mid May to hand out posters, flyers, entry forms and competition regulations.
Enthusiasm and interest, based on last year's success, was high, the only concern among village heads being that there may not be enough entry forms to satisfy all potential competitors: a good sign indeed.
My Beautiful Home 2015 will be officially launched to the public with a photographic exhibition to be held at the National Gallery in Bulawayo on July 16. The exhibition will showcase the stunning photography of official photographer, Dr Andre F van Rooyen, featuring images from last year's event, together with prints from his vast collection of portraits and landscapes from around the world.
The exhibition, while raising excitement for and awareness of the event, is also aimed at raising funds for the initiative which is run by a small group of individuals, with a keen interest in the Matopos ,on a voluntary basis. The logistics of running the event, particularly through seven wards, is vast, while the team is still looking for prize sponsorship in order to be able to award prizes to as many contenders as possible.
At the end of July a preliminary selection of the top exteriors and interiors will be carried out primarily by the people themselves within each ward, together with a member of the committee and headed by a village co-ordinator. During August, all the finalists will be visited by the full committee to determine the winners in each category.
Winners will be announced at a prize giving ceremony at the Amagugu Centre in September, the date of which is yet to be confirmed.
In the meantime, the people of the Matobo District are already reported to be wiping away the remnants of last year's designs and setting to work on fresh new decorations, ready for the spring and My Beautiful Home.
My Beautiful Home is a community initiative; please check out our Face Book page (My Beautiful Home - Comba Indlu Ngobuciko.

NATIONAL PARKS REINSTATES 'UNGUIDED' PUBLIC WALKING IN MANA POOLS
8th July 2015

The Zambezi Society is pleased to announce that as a result of its representations to the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority on behalf of the visiting Public, the Authority has reinstated 'unguided' public walking in Mana Pools National Park, with immediate effect.

Here is the statement received on 8th July 2015 from ZimParks:-
'We would like to thank you and your team very much for efforts at engaging the Authority with regards to the above...
1. The ban on unguided walks has been lifted with immediate effect.
2. All walking activities will require permits as follows:-
a. $10 per day for Zimbabweans
b. $15 per day for foreigners;
3. The option of hiring a ranger still remains at the gazetted price;
4. All persons found walking without a permit will be fined $100;
Kindly note that this is with immediate effect. This position will be reviewed at the end of the year in line with all other conditions.'

The Zambezi Society's representations were backed by the results of its Public Survey on the "Ban on Public Walking in Mana".

The survey had a total of 121 responses - a highly representative sample of visitors to Mana Pools. Of this sample:-
55% were from Zimbabwe and 45% were foreign visitors
15% said that unguided walking is bad
78% said that unguided walking is good
52% said they would stop coming to Mana Pools, or would come less frequently as a result of the ban on unguided walking.

The survey results showed an overwhelming call for the ban to be revisited, and a strong acceptance that an enforceable Code of Conduct be put in place.

Prior to the ban, the Zambezi Society had worked with its constituency members, the Lower Zambezi Tour Operators Association (LZTOA) and the ZimParks Authority at Mana Pools station level to develop and agree on two Codes of Conduct - one for Mana Pools National Park and one for Chitake Spring.

The ZimParks Authority has agreed to these Codes of Conduct being implemented. It is putting in place strong measures to ensure that fines are strictly enforced for offenders and non-permit-holders.
In the meantime, The Zambezi Society is reviewing its draft Codes of Conductand will shortly make them available for download on our website.

The Zambezi Society wishes to thank the ZimParks Authority for taking its representations seriously. We urge visitors to Mana Pools to recognise the privilege that has been returned to them and to respect the guidelines provided by the agreed Codes of Conduct. While making a daily payment for the privilege of 'unguided' walking adds an additional financial burden to visitors, it is nonetheless arguable that this requirement should have been in place long ago, and might have served to prevent the unacceptable behaviour of a small minority of visitors in recent years

Concerned Citizens - Lobbying against the Capture of Zimbabwe's wild animals for sale to zoos.

Bulletin No 3: 08.07.15 Page 1/3

This, our third Bulletin was compiled by: Lynne James and Jane High

Latest Developments:

1.24 elephant Calves loaded and flown to Guangzhou, China. 3 calves remain in the Boma/holding pens. The fate of the 8 lions which were captive at the same venue is unknown.
On Saturday 4th July 2015 reports from the pens in HWANGE confirmed that a contingent of Chinese, our Director General of Zimparks, together with our Minister of Environment, had arrived. Crates, hydraulic equipment and trucks were in place. At 09.00hrs the operation to load elephant calves into crates and onto trucks owned by a Bulawayo based transporter, began.
The trucks departed Hwange under heavy armed escort Saturday evening, and photos of these trucks, loaded with crates, were very swiftly posted in the social media. With that evidence we were able to verify the owners of a Bulawayo Transport company and made concerted efforts to contact them directly on Sunday, by land line, mobile phone and by text, to query their involvement.
The trucks drove through the night to Harare International Airport.
Amid heavy security, described as a 'lock down', eye witnesses at the airport reported that the only scheduled flight to China that day was United Arab Emirates EK 714 scheduled to depart at 18.40hrs. A large aircraft with a red insignia, too far way for positive ID, was seen at the CARGO section. Emirates (UAE) were bombarded via social media, and the CEO, Mr. Tim Clark, responded on Monday afternoon with the following information:
'A chartered B747-200 freighter owned by UNI-TOP and aircraft registration number B246Z, carrying 24 baby elephants departed Harare International at 17.00hrs flight number UW9968 destination Guangzhou, China'. He categorically denied that Emirates was in any way involved in this shipment.

Page 2/3: Zimelephants Bulletin 3

As of 7th July 2015 3 elephant calves remain in the Boma.

1.The Chinese Buyers
Seen at the Airport on Sunday 5th, whilst the elephants were being transferred to the aircraft, was Li Song, who leads the 'Chinese Trade Delegation' and is in partnership with Franchesco Matinari, via a company called Eagle Italian Shoes, and another appropriately called 'China First.' Eagle supplies our military, Prison Service and police with combat boots from their tannery in Marondera, and is reportedly owed in the region of USD $ 4 million by our government. Are our elephants being sold to cover this debt instead of the funding national anti-poaching operations as we have been told This question that has to be asked. Song has already been heavily implicated in the export of skins, ivory and other wild life products... 'by the container load', using false CITES certificates. Among several luxury vehicles, she drives a Land Cruiser registration number ABV7533.
1.CITES and the Law.
In direct contravention of Zimbabwean National Law (specifically Chapter SI 19:09: The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act), our Animal Welfare Officers from the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and Veterinarian for Animal Welfare (VAWZ), were denied access to inspect these captured elephants.
It must be noted that continual requests were made throughout this 9 month operation for Welfare Officers to observe and asses these elephants. Both SPCA and VAWZ representatives who made appointments with ZIMPARKS for scheduled meetings were stood up, despite considerable patience.
Our Ministers keep repeating the mantra that they are 'in compliance with CITES' on this live animal export. This is simply not true. CITES requires that NO NATIONAL LAWS may be contravened by either the buyer or seller of wild animals. CITES certificates may not be issued if national laws are contravened. This explains why ZIMPARKS and the government have kept this operation under total lock down. The licenses of Welfare Officers are controlled and issued by the Minister of Environment, who also oversees ZIMPARKS. This is akin to the fox guarding the hen run whilst the vixen is inside the coop. Transparency under these conditions is simply impossible.

1.The fate of the Lions held in a small cage near the elephants.
Those on the ground at the pens also indicated that the pride of caged lions had been uplifted but their fate has yet to be determined.

Page 3/3: Zimelephants Bulletin 3

1.What Next
Another capture It is presumed the next phase may be initiated shortly when another 30 calves will be driven from their natal herd and undergo the same 'taming' process - please spare a moment to imagine what this actually means. In our interview with Rowan Martin, who clearly claimed that he 'wrote the manual' on how to 'domesticate' wild elephants, he mentioned that ZIMPARKS have an order for 200 elephants from China. And that we are dealing with 'Very rich and very determined men.' So it goes on...
1.Of interest and immense concern.....
The international community have been absolute stalwarts in this fight and we thank them hugely for all that they are doing on an ongoing basis on behalf of the welfare of our wildlife. Their efforts are nothing short of Herculean.... trust us. Without them we would not have a fraction of the pressure and factual coverage in the media that we do have ....it would be swamped with our government's version of events.
Conversely, the lack of knowledge, action and factual reporting in Zimbabwe is staggering, even within circles that 'should know'. The organisations that you may think are 'fielding' these events in the very best interests of our wildlife often find that they cannot, as it jeopardises their own work. This we understand. However, it is high time that many, many more Zimbabwean citizens found their voices and used them. This selling of national assets and heritage is not going to go away - all signs are that it will become much, much worse. We Zimbabweans need to pull together.
Please pass this Bulletin on.
