SPECIAL SCENTS AND SMELLS.

It is amazing how, when some senses diminish, other senses become stronger.

HeeHoo says I am as deaf as a post but I swear its because he mumbles and talks to me when I am in another room!!

That aside, my sense of smell has always been good, often to my own disadvantage, but usually scents and smells bring me endless joy.

Scents are incredibly powerful, and there is some evidence that your sense of smell is actually better associated with memory than your vision or other senses.
We all have a sense of smell, and we all use it constantly, whether we realize it or not. Scent and smell are two of the most important, yet often overlooked, elements of everyday experience.

Everyone has a unique "smellprint": No two people smell things the same way because each of us has scent blind spots, meaning specific odors we can't pick up on. So that room spray that smells like cupcakes to you and like creamed sweetcorn to your friend

My favorite smell is coffee brewing on the percolator, especially Kenyan Java Coffee!! They say if you are selling a house, you should brew coffee to make people draw favourably towards your house!!

People in Zimbabwe do not need to use room aromas as they do in countries where there is always air conditioning. Our windows are generally wide open, allowing in Mother Nature's own scents, but aroma diffusers are commonplace in many parts of the world.

In the USA some folk change the aromas of their homes according to the seasons ! At Christmas time its aromatic spices - nutmeg, cinnamon strudel, and gingerbread.

At Easter time its the spring notes of lily of the valley, peonies and violets.
In mid summer they tend towards scents that contain sweet summer florals, such as roses and orange blossoms, mixed with fresh fruit scents like raspberry and peach can be a delightful summer fragrance. In addition, a tropical fragrance with notes of honeysuckle, island flowers, and sea salt can also be a pleasant reminder of sun-soaked days spent on the beach or vacation.

And in the fall when pumpkins abound they seem to look for a fragrance that contains hints of sandalwood, musk, amber, and jasmine.

Vanilla is undoubtedly my favorite if I use a room scent at all.

Then there are the old familiar family smells. My dearest mum has a chenille dressing gown, red in color and if ever Gavin and I were poorly, the only way to console ourselves was to climb under Mum's dressing gown and go to sleep.

HeeHoo has his own dear familiar husbandly musky smell, its the smell of belonging, and he is always liberal with his Aramis and his Jimmy Choo although he often reverts to his old favorite Brut.

With my strong sense of smell, too much perfume sends me reeling and sneezing, and I am circumspect with my own fragrances, preferring to spray them on the back of my neck, rather than on my wrists and behind my ears, as the beauty books tell us!!

Of course everyone's favorite scents are the intoxicating sweetness of a baby's head or the drowsy, snuffly smell of a puppy. Another favorite is the downy breath of a child as it snuggles into your neck whilst carrying it to its cot.

A dawn walk to me is my idea of heaven, the heady odours of the frangipani, the cassia trees and the morning bursts from the garden roses, turn every walk into a sensation.

Sadly as we enter into more modern markets, where refrigeration is prevalent, one seldom smells the intoxicating ripeness of a fresh peach, or the pungent spiciness of an overripe pineapple, but one can often encapsulate the scent of a home grown tomato.

Lawn clippings can drive me into a frenzy of delight, and the mouldy, mulchy leafy smell emanating from a ripe compost heap, to me as an avid gardener, is divine!!

Lipsticks are very poignant to me, one particular lipstick I wore when pregnant, would always conjure up a spot of morning sickness, but the smell of Mum's favourite petunia pink Cutex lipstick, always brings forth a smile of delight.

Household scents are so important, there is nothing quite like returning to the aroma of one's own special 'pad' after a spell away. What is that smell, its poignant, its breathtaking, is it the pungent delicious odor of one's own life

Then of course there are the 'other' smells that one has to deal with in the tropics, the unsavory body and foot odors that one has to steer as far away from, as one possibly can!!

However my 'worst' is toilet sprays, especially the pungent ones that remind one of the loo. There is nothing worse than someone emerging innocently from the loo, covered in THAT particular Jasmine odor!!

And then there are Winter Smells, the smells of wood smoke, of Mulligatawny Soup boiling on the hob, of Vicks Vaporub and Choats Extract of Lettuce Cough Syrup!!

How special are these balmy Zimbabwe Winter Days

PRH (Personality & Human Relations) Zimbabwe
Our present lifestyle in Zimbabwe has become so frantic with stress and worries. We so easily become as frantic as the situations we encounter on a daily basis and the problem with that is that without calm, there is no wisdom, no impulse control and no real peace of mind. We're more likely to become emotionally reactive and unclear in our thinking, without deep peace of mind we cannot be the people we are capable of being, and we cannot live the lives we are capable of living. With our PRH training we guide you to a more clear and understanding place within you where you can access your gifts, talents and positive qualities to live more fruitful and wholesome lives. Join us on one of these workshops and journey with others into a better and more peaceful lifestyle.
6th June (Saturday) STRESS SPEAKS
Stress is mental, emotional or physical strain caused by excessive stimulation or demands. It results in physical symptoms. In developing new awareness of your body's messages about stress, you will build a more attentive and healthy relationship with your body. You will discover how your symptoms of stress can guide you to your inner riches.
8th - 11th June HELPING MY CHILDREN BECOME THEMSELVES
This is a 4 day workshop and is suitable for parents of children of all ages as well as child care professionals, teachers and youth workers. It is about becoming clear about what you experience with each child's unique way of being. And to discover how to help each child develop according to this unique personality.

PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO AND THE ACADEMY
50 CLUB INAUGURAL DRAW
Thursday 28 May in the Academy Foyer at 6.45 p.m.
Membership forms and full details are available from the Academy office.
Supper available from 6.00 p.m. - must be ordered in advance.

GUYS AND DOLLS
Thursday 28 May in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.15 p.m.
All the hot gamblers are in town, and they're all depending on Nathan Detroit to set up this week's incarnation of 'The Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York'; the only problem is that he needs $1000 for a deposit on the ideal place to hold it. Throw in Sarah Brown, who's short on sinners at the mission she runs; Sky Masterson, who accepts
Nathan's $1000 bet that he can't get Sarah Brown to go with him to Havana; Miss Adelaide, who wants Nathan to marry her; Police Lieutenant Brannigan, who always seems to appear at the wrong time; and the music/lyrics of Frank Loesser - and you've got quite a musical!

Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members] Supper available from 6.00 p.m. - must be ordered in advance.

HAYDN: THE SEASONS
Friday 29 May in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m.
'The Seasons' was one of the last works Haydn wrote, a wonderfully varied and detailed summation of his composing life. A contemporary review of the first performance commented that 'silent reverence, amazement and loud enthusiasm alternated, for the powerful appearance of colossal visions and the immeasurable abundance of splendid ideas surprised and overwhelmed the boldest expectations.' A review of the present performance from the 2013 Salzburg Festival was rather more succinct: 'Jubilation!'
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Dinner available during the interval ($10.00) - must be ordered in advance.

THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM
Thursday 21 May in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m.
Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m.
Bourne is once again brought out of hiding, this time inadvertently by London-based reporter Simon Ross who is trying to unveil Operation Blackbriar, an upgrade to Project Treadstone, in a series of newspaper columns. Bourne sets up a meeting with Ross and realises instantly they're being scanned. Information from the reporter stirs a new set of memories, and Bourne must finally, ultimately, uncover his dark past whilst dodging The Company's best efforts to eradicate him.
'The best blockbuster of the summer and the most accomplished thriller since, well, Supremacy. This is the pay-off Bourne fans have been waiting for and the standard to which future blockbusters should be held.'
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members] Supper available from 6.15 p.m. - must be ordered in advance.

GIORDANO: ANDREA CHENIER
Friday 15 May in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m.
Andrea Chenier is an opera full of heart-stopping big tunes and powerful emotional situations. Gerard is an idealist whom the French Revolution has betrayed as much as it has his rival in love, the poet Chenier (Placido Domingo). His temptation to abuse his power to seduce the virtuous Maddalena is a momentary one, though its consequences are terrible for all concerned.

Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Dinner available during the interval ($10.00)

CATCH POLE S.P.C.A.

In March, after witnessing a traumatized dog being rescued by S.P.C.A. I appealed for a dog lover 'somewhere' to help our hardworking and non profit making S.P.C.A. to donate a Catch Pole as they are not available in our country.
A caring and generous businessman in Johannesburg came forward and purchased a very expensive, and pet friendly Catch Pole at his own expense and had it delivered safely to Bulawayo.
I know our S.P.C.A. has been in contact with this gentleman, but as I put in the appeal, I wanted to add my personal thanks to him for acting so quickly and caring about the abused and lost dogs around Bulawayo that were desperately in need of help.

Heartfelt Thanks.
A grateful Animal Lover.

7) Bulawayo News

Zimbabwe's National animal welfare organisations, Veterinarians for Animal Welfare Zimbabwe (VAWZ) and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals - Mutare and Bulawayo Branches - have jointly issued the following public statement following the capture of wild elephants from Hwange National Park:

1. The SPCA and VAWZ appreciate that animal welfare standards have changed over time, particularly with respect to captive wildlife, to the extent that even the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) now plays an important role in setting standards for animal welfare. We urge the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority to take cognisance of these changed circumstances.

2. While it is accepted that the capture and export, into captivity, of Zimbabwe's wildlife, in particular the capture of elephant calves out of their maternal herds, may be within the terms of the CITES agreements, to which Zimbabwe is a signatory, neither this Convention, nor any other international regulatory authority, currently regulates the major animal welfare issues involved in such captures and exports. Therefore CITES, and other international organizations which control trade in wild animals are urged to re-examine their role with respect to animal welfare within trade in wildlife, and not merely deal with the conservation or health status of species.

3. Animal welfare in Zimbabwe is governed by the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (Chapter 19:09). This Act is currently administered by the Ministry of Environment, Water Resources and Climate, under which the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority falls. This Authority which has undertaken the recent capture of elephant calves in Hwange National Park, as well as other similar captures of elephant and other species in recent times, should therefore ensure that any captures, and subsequent holding and export, of wildlife are undertaken in accordance of the provisions of this Act.
Section 3 of this Act specifically makes it illegal for any person or organization to:
wantonly or unreasonably do or omit to do any act, or cause or procure the commission or omission of any act which causes any unnecessary suffering to any animal; or
wantonly or unreasonably do, or cause, or procure the commission of any act likely to infuriate or terrify any animal
It is therefore very likely that the deliberate disruption of maternal herds of wild elephant, being amongst the most sentient of animals on this planet, and subsequent rendering of the calves as captive orphans, purely for commercial gain, would be found, in a court of law, to be in contravention of the letter and spirit of these clauses of this Act

1. SPCA and VAWZ note that the last export of wild caught elephant calves to China, in 2012, resulted in the deaths of two of the four calves exported to that country, and that other such recent captures have ended with release of the elephant calves, usually into semi-captive situations albeit for ultimate rehabilitation to the wild in Zimbabwe. This latter course of action appears to have been the result of pressure from the international community and concerned local organizations. The present capture has again attracted wide international condemnation with possible long-term effects on Zimbabwe's conservation and animal welfare credentials.

2. It is inevitable that any capture and translocation of wildlife will result in stress to the captured animals. Such stress should be minimized by adopting the following principles:
Capture and translocation of wildlife, especially if undertaken in Zimbabwe's National Parks (Zimbabwe's heritage), should have genuine conservation objectives to the benefit of Zimbabwe, and this country's conservation ethics, and not be solely for commercial purposes. Therefore such captures should be minimal in number
Captures should be undertaken using the least stressful and most efficient methods, and any subsequent period of close confinement should be kept to a minimum prior to release into a suitable environment
Such a suitable environment should fulfil the physical and social requirements of the species and this is impossible with long-term, close confinement
Any non-domesticated species destined for a more restrictive environment should originate from a captive breeding establishment, of which there are many nowadays, and be obviously habituated to the close presence of people
No free-ranging wild animal should be captured and placed permanently in a restrictive environment unless there are critical and justifiable conservation reasons for so doing
No wild animal should be captured and exported for the purpose of performing or providing an unnatural spectacle to the public. This is often a feature of some wildlife parks in some countries
Wherever possible, and especially where there is likely to be controversy, the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority should endeavour to engage independent, and reputable, national animal welfare organizations. This will create the necessary spirit of cooperation to ensure that capture, interim holding, translocation and any export of wildlife is in accordance with Zimbabwe's Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, as well as internationally accepted norms. Such cooperation should include the co-inspection of any foreign destination for Zimbabwe's wildlife

1. It is our belief that elephants may warrant special consideration in terms of animal welfare and captive management, because of this species' considerable intelligence and social cohesion. There does exist a draft Code of Practice for Domestic Elephant as well as, more recently, a draft Elephant Management Policy. Both these documents should pay careful attention to current scientific findings on elephant behaviour and social requirements, and therefore should include references to animal welfare practices based on this knowledge and within the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
