An advert in the Marie Claire magazine caught my eye recently. 'Insure your handbag for R4000' it said !! Now how insulting is that to a girl, whose handbag is her very means of survival My handbag and its wicked variety of contents is certainly worth a whole lot more than that!! Handbags are after all an extension of one's personality.... My blessed Mum belonged to the 'good old days' where one did not have more than one handbag for years and years and years. She was not part of the 'throwaway' fraternity. Hers was an ancient old soft black leather bag that sat firmly in between the bucket seats of our old Morry, perched on top of the handbrake! She could scrabble in her handbag and find anything purely by feel, as she drove down Selborne Avenue to take Gavin and me to school! Now I must admit I have had more than one handbag in my life, but I am indeed a handbag 'Loyalist', I know the exact bag that I need, the precise specifications must be adhered to before I purchase a new handbag, and that's only after the existing one needs to go to that place in the sky 'where old precious handbags go to die' !! Now different gals like different handbags. She Hoo Must Wear Kevlar needs a very capacious strong bag. After all a girl needs somewhere to carry her flack jacket!! She Who must run needs room for running shoes in her bag!! Over the years, the Girls have given HeeHoo a variety of 'Man Bags' in an effort to guide him into the modern world of men, and I confess, he loyally tries to carry them. However exactly two weeks after Christmas or his birthday the novelty wears off and he always resorts to handing his keys, his wallet and his cell phone over to me, to weigh down my already over-burdened bag. Now this is a wife's duty, we all know that, but I feel I must object strongly when he dares to refer to my bag as 'The Black Hole' !! My handbag has always been the subject of ridicule, because of it's very capaciousness. But the contents therein have saved the day on more than one occasion. I have even managed to smuggle a lighter and a pen knife (disguised as a key) from the airline X ray machines, for many happy years now. The lighter was once the sole means of light by which we changed a tyre on our car! My 'Black Hole' is certainly not as bad as some folks' handbags I can assure you, but it is so heavy it has given me permanent hollows in my shoulder blades....however, it's not diamonds, but handbags, that are a Girl's Best Friend!! ++++ 2) EVENTS Two Launches of 'Textures', poems by John Eppel and Togara Muzanenhamo - two of Zimbabwe's foremost poets Launch 1: Christian Brothers College on Thursday 19 March at 5.30pm. All welcome, free admission Launch 2: Indaba Book Cafe on Friday 20 March at 5.30pm. All welcome, $2 admission includes a free drink "In Textures we have two poets who make magic, two 'heart poets' who share a mastery of words, but who use them very differently. Look closely and you will see the differences - the contrasting perspectives, focuses and styles that are the creative products of individual experience - but stand back and be moved by a collective that is the work of complementary genius. The format weaves you back and forth between one, and then the other, and the effect disturbs, delights, inspires and consoles.' The race starts in the magnificent Matobo National Park, in the heart of the Matobo Hills World Heritage Site. In the cool early morning light, the runners will wind deeper into the hills along the Circular Drive, no doubt startling a few klipspringer and possibly a rhino or two! They will pass around Malindidzimu, otherwise known as 'Worlds View', and then swing north before exiting the park and leaving the hills behind them. The remainder of the race sees the runners pass over from the Limpopo to the Zambezi escarpment, and then onto the City of Bulawayo. Avoiding the CBD, the race will finish at the Bulawayo Athletic Club (BAC), with athletes completing the 33 miles, or 53 km ultra-marathon. The original Matopos 33 Miler was organised by the Raylton Rovers Running Club (RRRC), and was won by Mr Charlie Chase (Germiston, South Africa) in a time of 3hrs, 44 minutes and 56 seconds. Following the successful re-launch of this event in 2013 by the Matobo Conservation Society, PPC Zimbabwe will sponsor this truly historic marathon once again in 2015. In conjunction with the main ultra-marathon, a half marathon of 21 km, a relay (5 runners by 10.6km each) and a 5km Fun run, will also be run along the route, all finishing at BAC. Over 300 runners took part in 2014, with 20 sponsored water points en route. Regulations The race will be run in accordance with the regulations of the NAAZ. Thursday 12 March in the Robert Sibson Hall at 5.15 p.m. The fourth stage of life's journey is for animals to gain power and the privileges it brings: enhanced social status and a better chance of siring offspring. Admission: $2.00 [free to film members] THE TUDORS SERIES 3 - PART 1 Thursday 12 March in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m. 'The Tudors' returns for a third series which is quite as gripping as its predecessors! Twenty-seven years into his reign, Henry VIII is at the height of his powers. A new queen means revived hope for an heir, and the growth of his Protestant Reformation promises that Henry will be the most influential religious figure in all of England, possibly the world. But when rebellion, treason and tragedy strike his court, Henry goes on the offensive to take down those who threaten him by every ruthless means possible. Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members] Supper available from 6.30 p.m. THE WINTER'S TALE Friday 13 March in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. Following his highly popular 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland', created for The Royal Ballet back in 2011, Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon drew on the same music and design team to create 'a triumph' and 'something entirely new' (Daily Telegraph) in this evocative reimagining of 'The Winter's Tale', Shakespeare's enduring story of jealousy, compassion and forgiveness. Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Dinner available during the interval ($10.00) LIFE STORY 5 - COURTSHIP Thursday 19 March in the Robert Sibson Hall at 5.15 p.m. The competition to breed has created both the most extraordinary beauty and the most violent battles seen in nature. Admission: $2.00 [free to film members] THE TUDORS 2 Thursday 19 March IN THE Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m. While Brandon stamps out rebellions in the north and a new threat to Henry's reign arises abroad, grand preparations are underway at court to celebrate the imminent birth of a male heir to the throne. Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members] Supper available from 6.30 p.m. PUCCINI: TURANDOT Friday 20 March in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. 'Turandot' has become famous for one number, the tenor's aria 'Nessun dorma' which achieved pop status after Pavarotti's recording of it was used as the theme tune for the 1990 World Cup - it even reached No.2 on the UK Singles Chart! But there's a lot more to the opera than that, and Andrei Serban's spectacular and thrilling 1984 production of Puccini's final and grandest opera has long been a classic at the Royal Opera House. This recording (of its fifteenth revival!) was made in 2013 and features American Lise Lindstrom, one of the very few contemporary Turandots who can genuinely sing this 'killer' role. Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Dinner available during the interval ($10.00): ++++ Francophonie festival starting Friday, for 2 weeks! Dad, Les, Barky 'A good name is better than good oil' Ecc 7:1. What a legacy this great man, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather left behind. He touched so many lives in such a kind, genuine and humorous way. Not an hour in the day went by where our beloved Barky didn't make someone laugh - his family, his peers, total strangers. His optimistic outlook on life encouraged, up built and comforted all those that crossed his path. We are yet to meet a man of his calibre. His passion for rugby drove him to play for Matabeleland in the early 1950's and his all-round love of sport continued right until the end. This is only a very small part of him that we and so many others will miss. He was the love of our family. We ask you to assist in eliminating this practice that threatens our environment. ILLEGAL REMOVAL AND SALE OF PROTECTED SPECIES For the public's information, the Matobo Conservation Society has made an extract from the National Parks and Wildlife Act 14/75 in respect of protected species. We especially bring this to your attention as it has been observed that vendors in Bulawayo are offering for sale Orchids, Cycads, Treeferns, Flamelilys and other protected species. We have also observed the use of club moss and ferns in hanging baskets. These plants have been illegally removed from their natural environment, and this practice threatens our natural heritage. Members of the Public should inform the Police, National Parks or the Matobo Conservation Society if they come across any of these illicit dealers - and you should not buy from them! Bulletin No 2: 10.03.15 This, our second Bulletin was compiled by: Lynne James and Jane High Latest Developments: (* ) Names known but withheld.) 1. Still no access. As of 10.3.15 Animal Welfare Inspectors from both the ZNSPCA and VAWZ have failed to gain access to the elephants, lion and sable. No up-dates have been received from The Chief Veterinary officer ( *) Government Veterinary Service Wild Life Unit, since he visited the holding pens and reported that the animals have food and water. (January) One baby elephant had died prior to his visit. What further monitoring has been carried out - we do not know. Factual evidence of the current physical and psychological statues of the animals continues to be withheld from the Public. Sources have reported to us that 3 of the original Elephant calves (caught in November) were deemed too large and without any rehabilitation were simply let go in the Park. 3 younger calves have been caught to replace them. A pride of 7-9 Lions has been caught and is being held in a 'small' enclosure. The person in charge of this project is now known. (*) He is Zimbabwean and represented the NPWMA Game Capture Unit as a 'refresher' participant on 2013 course on Chemical and Physical restraint of Wildlife organised by the Zimbabwe Wildlife Veterinary Trust. He is not a Veterinarian. 2.Public response We have received a wave of private and public comment around our initiative to get Zimbabweans talking about this. Naturally many people are outraged and horrified. Most people mention the terror and fear these wild, young creatures will have experienced during and after the capture exercise. Many email us their thanks for tackling the issue and some people also ask 'What are we actually going to DO about it Talking is not enough' Firstly we have been heartened by your overwhelmingly supportive response and we want to thank everybody who continues to encourage, or to correspond with us. For those of you who expressed a desire to act instead of just talk, we are going to make suggestions for you to consider, at the end of this Bulletin. We believe that each and every one of us CAN influence the future of these animals. 3.Recording the Captures Presumably those responsible for planning and securing the elephant calves, the Lions and the Sable have documented all aspects of the capture. There is much to be learned here, since it may be the first such large scale operation, catching wild elephant calves, outside of a culling operation. It is possible that video footage was taken from the helicopter which drove the females ahead of it. This footage will demonstrate how to separate the calves from their living mothers - unlike in a culling exercise where Lobbying against the capture of wild animals Bulletin 2. the babies stay next to their fallen mothers and so are easily caught, roped and manhandled onto vehicles. Presumably those in charge of this, quite different, operation have continued to document every stage of the exercise so that causalities and therefore expenses, can be minimised for future captures. However all reports and documentary evidence of these captures and containment, have been successfully hidden from the Public. Given that these animals were caught in a National Park, these reports should be open to the public for scrutiny. 4. Polarized beliefs around Management of Elephants We have met with and corresponded with as many people as we could in these two months. The plight of our wild life and the truth about the elephants is neatly summarised by Iain Douglas-Hamilton from whom I quote 'There is a spectrum of philosophies on how to deal with the ivory trade and conserve elephants that has become extremely polarized and has led to a bitter clash of ideas. At one end is the belief that the trade should be controlled and promoted so that profits can be used to boost conservation. At the other end is the belief that all trade in ivory is a pact with the devil, which can never be adequately controlled. We agree with the latter. While there are people we know and respect who adopt the first proposition, we fear that any trade in ivory opens a Pandora's Box of vested interests and commercial incentives. At best these exert an insidious pressure towards ever-more interference with Nature, and at worst they give rise to the criminal killing of elephants and smuggling of ivory' To all the people we have met thus far, let me quote Iain Douglas-Hamilton again: 'Although the arguments expressed have sometimes been bitter, we recognize that men and women of great integrity are found one either side of the ivory divide' 5. Current action a) Vets for Animal Welfare Zimbabwe (VAWZ) are holding a full meeting over the issue in mid-March. The Chairman of VAWZ is a highly experienced and respected Wild Life Vet. His committee comprises many of our leading Veterinarians whose skills and dedication to the wellbeing of animals both domestic and wild are well known both at home and abroad. b) The Mutare SPCA committee has formally expressed its concern on this issue to the ZNSPCA Chair, and have requested the urgent initiation of a formal approach to gain access to these animals, as is the right of all animal welfare groups through The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (Chapter 19.09). Should ZNSPCA gain access to these animals the Mutare SPCA have agreed to contribute to the costs involved in such a visit. c) Letters, meetings and exchange of information with MP's have been encouraging. We will continue to meet as many as possible and have the issue raised in Parliament. d) We have requested assistance in the form of expert advice locally as well as regionally. Two of the organisations who have responded and can be named are Voices for Elephants (Dr. Joyce Poole and Petter Granli) and Lindie Hensman of RHERU. These two organisations are currently at the forefront of scientific research on elephants in Gorongoza and Bela Bela respectively. Lobbying against the capture of wild animals Bulletin 2. What you can do: i) Go to www.elephantvoices.org where you can read and sign the ELEPHANT CHARTER. Adding our names to this Charter shows that Zimbabweans are interested and invested in the future of our Elephants. ii) Read about the work of Dr. Joyce Poole. She has personally written to our Government in both 2010 (about the sale of our Wild Life to North Korea) and recently with regard to the ongoing capture exercise. Dr. Poole has supplied us with invaluable scientific material regarding the spatial needs of elephants and much, much more. iii) Read about the work being carried out by the Rory Hensman Elephant Research Unit (RHERU). iv) Write to your favourite magazine/newspaper or online forum about the issue. Spread the word and open the discussion. v) TALK to others around you about whether you think Zimbabwe should sell our wild creatures to zoos in far flung places, or for the entertainment of others. The facts of this capture exercise are being withheld but we need not be complicit in this code of silence. vi) Read the article dated March 9th 2015 by Christina Russo in National Geographic. At the end of last term she had to have another operation on both legs so that she will be able to keep using prosthetic legs. We have just had the quotation for good quality prosthetics which can be adjusted so they will fit her for the next 10 or so years. Unfortunately for this type of prosthetic the cost is very high at $4,000! We could go for cheaper heavy prosthetics but not only will these be uncomfortable but they will have to be replaced every couple of years. We do understand that there are so many calls on the Bulawayo public but I know that this little girl touched many hearts when she was involved in the accident. I have a little Satnav, I've had it all my life It's better than the normal ones, my Satnav is my wife. It gives me full instructions, especially how to drive "It's sixty miles an hour", it says, "You're doing sixty five".
