7) Bulawayo News BULAWAYO PUBLICITY ASSOCIATION This is the beginning of a new year and it will be what we ourselves make of it. It is time to put Bulawayo back on the world map as an important historic and cultural destination. Bulawayo stands on some of the most ancient rocks on earth. Fossils dating back nearly 3 million years ago were seen in the form of mottled lines in blocks of limestone in a quarry about an hour's drive from Bulawayo and scientists believe these algae probably provide the earliest evidence of animate existence known to science (This was extracted from Dr O. N Ransford's book Historic Battlegrounds). The present City of Bulawayo, it has been said, is a fascinating blend of colonial and contemporary architecture, traditional culture and hospitality and an early settler community decided that Bulawayo was to become the cultural centre of Southern Africa and although their plans to build an opera house did not materialize, it does have the first cultural centre of its kind, viz the Amakhosi Cultural Centre. It also has an Academy of Music where international musicians, under the auspices of the Bulawayo Performing Arts, used to give recitals in its concert hall, but now due to various constraints, we can hear performances by local musicians and excellent school choirs. Bulawayo can boast of many firsts - the first train to come to what was then Rhodesia;the first electrical power station to be built and the first reservoir built in 1895 and the first wheat to be grown in the country by the Hope Fountain Missionaries. 1895 Mr Charles Duly, a Bulawayo businessman, introduced the first bicycle, followed in 1902 by the first car, a French Gladiator. Bulawayo, in fact, had electricity before London! The Natural History Museum has the second largest mounted elephant in the world, and the geological collection is perhaps the finest of their kind in Africa. In the district of Bulawayo there are two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Khami Ruins and the Matopos. The Matopo Hills has be described as an awe-inspiring panorama of jumbled rocks and kopjes, a place of mystery of retreat and contemplation, where all nations can behold their own vision of God. Today, Bulawayo is a historical, royal and cultural city, who's historical past have led to it being called the 'City of Kings' Visitors wishing to learn more about traditional ways may do so at the Amagugu International Heritage Centre which is within the confines of Matopos, located 60km along the Bulawayo Kezi Road. Their cultural activities include rubbing sticks to make a fire, grinding/pounding sorghum grain on stones and using pestle and mortar, cooking isitshwala, setting snares, fencing, beer brewing, sorghum threshing and floor preparation in which visitors are invited to participate. The centres current project entails painting the perimeter wall at the centre with mural images that depict the socio-economic lifestyle of local people in Matobo.
