7) Bulawayo News AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE OSTOMY ASSOCIATION OF ZIMBABWE A number of ostomates met in November 2013 and made the decision to establish the Ostomy Association. In Zimbabwe there are an estimated 2000 to 3500 persons with an intestinal stoma - an incision in the abdomen through which the waste from bowel or bladder flow into a colostomy or urostomy pouch. The Ostomy Association can help sufferers to overcome most of the hurdles through pre and post operative counselling, visits to patients' homes and, ultimately the education of patients and family with practical self care and monitoring based on a holistic approach related to the needs of each individual i.e. to help ostomates resume quality life and enjoy social activities To become established it is estimated the Association will need a minimum of $15,000.00 to $20,000.00 and, thereafter, to have financial support for ongoing costs of training of nurses and experienced ostomates, publicity and acquiring cost effective, long lasting, durable pouches.
