Cities should not grow at the expense of their history. The city's growth is best seen through the evolution of the building-scape and this can only be achieved if we respect, preserve and maintain our historic buildings. Any building that has survived more than 50 years is worth considering for its historic status otherwise all structures Built before 1910 are automatically protected by the Act. Before you alter/demolish a building ask yourself: Is the building more than 50 years Was it erected before 1910 Is it unique, an example of a type, did it break new architectural ground Is it associated with important historical events Does it possess architectural finesse that displays a high degree of craftsmanship and intellectual refinement so as to create a sense of wonder and curiosity If you answer to any of the above is YES then you could be about to demolish part of Zimbabwe's history. We want to ask for your help in making sure that our records are as complete as possible. The building is one of the city's oldest, built before 1910 and therefore has a preservation order on it. Robert Mugabe Road is the heart of the historical cityscape of the capital. The City of Harare says it gave the approval for renovations but the demolition which happened at night was by mistake. ROB BURRETT Cell: + 263.772.126963 Dear Member The Bulawayo Publicity Association was given a free stand at the recent Sanganai/Hlanganani Travel show held in Harare. These shows are very useful in that contacts are renewed with other exhibitors and information is given and received. Folders containing information on Bulawayo and the Matopos was handed to the international travel agents invited to the show, many of whom were brought to Bulawayo and the Matopos by Zimbabwe Tourism Authority. The Association was very pleased to learn that the agents are sending their clients to Bulawayo, but as they come here as part of a package, booked overseas, the Association does not get to see them. As we mentioned before, overland trucks come into Bulawayo almost daily and the tour operators inform us that the visitors really love Zimbabwe. As a matter of interest Khami Ruins is becoming a very popular tourist attraction. The Association is very grateful thanks must go to the Managing Director of the Cresta Hotel group, Mr Glen Stutchbury, who arranged for the staff to have complimentary bed and breakfast at the Jameson Hotel during the period of the show. The Association is also most grateful to these firms for their generous donations towards the financial outlay of exhibiting- African Wanderer, The Travel Shop and Buluwayo Board of Executors Trust. Without all this help the Association would not have been able to attend the travel show. As it was, it was given an award for the second best Publicity Association stand. TRAVEL & TOURISM KRISHNA TOURS & TRAVEL based at 55 Robert Mugabe Way, recently celebrated its second anniversary, and in 2013 was awarded the Amadeus Legend Award. Last month the agency received an Amadeus Golden Award in the 2014 Best Growth category. Amadeus is a technology company dedicated exclusively to the global travel industry. Ganda Lodge which is very popular with the locals because of its good facilities and reasonable prices is refurbishing its units and improving its bathroom facilities. The National Parks accommodation is looking very attractive and clean and the units are also in the process of being refurbished. The privately owned restaurants at Main and Sinamatela Camps serve good, plain food at reasonable prices. A fairly new lodge Nehimba Lodge which has been built in the Park itself caters mainly for the more affluent clients and, of course has the accommodation, facilities and comfort to appeal to these clients. It is a two hour drive from the Main Camp, due to the fact that frequent stops are made to see game at close quarters. Hwange Safari Lodge has a large lawned area protected by railings and a deep ditch, from where one can sit by the pool and watch game close at hand. There is generally some game grazing throughout the day. Mrs Bell is very grateful to the General Manager of the Hwange Safari Lodge for giving her complimentary accommodation and meals during her recent brief familiarization visit to the area. MBIZI GAME PARK, which had a stand at the travel show, wishes to make it known that it is close to Harare, and offers very reasonably priced accommodation at the main Lodge or nearby bush cottages. ASCOT LIBRARY, a branch of the Bulawayo Public Library, is very pleased that Petra School scholars are making good use of the library, as well as children from other schools as the library has a good selection of children's books. Parents are also becoming more aware of the advantages in their children reading, not only for pleasure but to help with their school work. Please do NOT let this important library be forced to close due to lack of funds. Any fund raising ideas you may have will be welcome.
